Maybe they are privateers. That would be a government sanctioned pirate. A fine tradition carried on for hundreds of years by Europe's major navy powers.

The inability to deal effectively with Somali piracy means that the world will see piracy arising in other areas of the globe. America can no longer sustain freedom of navigation. That means piracy will become a growth issue.

If you mean that as long as President Obama is in charge nothing agressive in nature will be done. I agree.

Swashbucklers roaming the seas looking for bounty. Arrrgh the good old days. You might be on to something.

According to CNN: As of February 15, pirates were holding 33 vessels and 712 hostages, according to the International Maritime Bureau.

It's not going away anytime soon. The US can only do so much.

On land, they're called Revenue Canada....

Yep, government sanctioned pirates. LOL But we give so willingly with nary a peep.

This sounds like an international problem, therefore, leaders from all countries should take responsibility.

They should just send out honeypots. On deck, one cigar smoking playboy looking type surrounded by 3 or 4 bikini clad hotties. Below deck, 50 Navy Seals armed to the teeth and ready for action.

Maybe the U.N. should have this clean up added to the list of their responsibilites. Maybe bring "W" out of retirement.

The gall?

It just goes to prove exactly what I was saying would happen. Fight fire with fire and the fire gets bigger.... risks increase, death tolls rise.

Keep it up long enough and they'll just kill everybody on board the ships they capture, forget ransom demands, and just take the ships and cargo for their own.

Like I said, in international waters, go ahead and shoot at them without question, but inside their waters, you're playing their game.... don't want to play their game?

Don't go in or near their waters.

But thanks for sharing that link.

I don't ****ing believe it. Not one of you actually talked about the root causes behind Somali piracy. That country is on the brink...but you're here spouting fascistic nonsense about waging all-out war on those evil pirates.

For shame people.

Tell me you are joking.

We tried to fix Somalia before.....remember?

It is an Islamic hellhole ruled by whatever tribal warlord has the most weapons this month.

The pirates even seize, and hold for ransom, aid cargoes of food.

When one is attacking ships on the high seas and murdering people, you kill the unfortunate misunderstood sweeties.

Nothing else will do.

The fight is on.....we are just VERY late in defending ourselves.

BTW "fascistic" is not a word. At least spell your insults correctly.

And perhaps you could explain how you would deal with people that murder defenseless retirees with boatloads of bibles??? Perhaps you could go over there and be chief negotiator.........hold hands in a circle and sing "Michael Rowed the Boat Ashore"..........apologize for the evils of western colonialism and American Imperialism........ask for solidarity...........

I'll watch from over here......

And I'll write the nomination for your Darwin Award.

Somalia is not 'on the brink', it has no functioning government.

The solution is to execute the pirates. There are various bizarre claims by Somalis about being an unofficial coast guard, but in reality they are the money making arm of various organized crime groups around the world. If 30 to 40% of the pirates disappeared, the problem would start to go away.

As a Pastafarian, I take issue with these verbal attacks on revered pirates. May the Flying Spaghetti Monster have mercy on your souls.

It could work, you never know until you try..... apologies can go a long way, believe it or not. :p

The Pentagon says it is looking into how it might act on a draft U.N. Security Council resolution, being circulated by the United States, that would, for the first time, authorize military action against pirate bases inside Somalia. But a senior American admiral is expressing skepticism about the plan.
The draft resolution calls on all countries to actively fight piracy off the Somali coast, as many countries including the United States have been doing. The U.S. draft also adds a 12-month authorization for foreign forces to enter Somali territory and airspace to "take all necessary measures" to find and stop pirates, if the transitional Somali government agrees.

US Admiral Skeptical About  Plan of Pursuing Pirates Inside Somalia | News | English

Admiral Gortney said piracy can not be ended through U.S. military action alone.

Why don't they draft up some money to invest in getting these people real jobs? Or it's best we just keep pirating their resources?

They had jobs fishing, just more money from extortion. Blow them and their little villiages off the map. Go in and hunt them down of course with Somalias permission.
