Re: Burning the Quran Places Canadian Soldiers at Risk

but the
west is fighting this war with a self imposed one hand behind its back much like
the North fought the South in the American Civil War.

Off topic but this is far from true. The North brought Total War on the South during the US Civil War. The South was completely devastated. One needs to learn about Sherman's March and the war in Virginia to see that.

As per usual, you said it for me and far better than I could. Well said! (Burning Harry Potter books! Really? NOOOO! :book: )

Indeed they did, as they claimed it was promoting children to take up witchcraft & satanism...... Morons.

'Satanic' Harry Potter books burnt
BBC NEWS | Entertainment | 'Satanic' Harry Potter books burnt

"Behind that innocent face is the power of satanic darkness," he said. "Harry Potter is the devil and he is destroying people."

Sounds like the Preacher has been turned down on his application for a permit
by the Gainesville Fire Department to have an open fire....so the bonfire thing is
out.

He might have to use a wood-burning appliance of some type.

From what I read, he's going to do it anyways, with or without the permit.

I agreed with most of what you said except the part I quoted. The US government nor the military is responsible for this loon threatening to burn the Quran, to suggest we abandon our allies due to some nutbar is a little premature.

Fine, then how about their continual disregard for the Afghan population that seem to always get in the crossfire and they just sum them up as collateral?

Meanwhile how many civilians have our troops killed?

Oh but I suppose one will just say there's more of their troops there, so of course they'll kill more then us.

Yet if I remember correctly, since our troops arrived there, I think I can count on one.... maybe two hands how many civilians died by our troops' actions.

The problem is that while we fight one set of Extremists and try and change their way of life, we continually turn a blind eye to the other Extremists south of our border because they buy our products.

If their government at least openly condemned this clown and this supposed book burning, that'd be one thing..... but I don't hear them saying or doing anything about it...... even our Prime Minister and Defence Minister openly condemned it:

Harper condemns Qur'an burning plan
CBC News - World - Harper condemns Qur'an burning plan

"I don't speak very often about my own religion but let me be very clear: My God and my Christ is a tolerant God, and that's what we want to see in this world," he said.

"I unequivocally condemn it," he said. "We all enjoy freedom of religion and that freedom of religion comes from a tolerant spirit."

MacKay condemns Qur'an burning
MacKay condemns Qur'an burning

"We are fighting extremists. We are not fighting Islam or all members of the Muslim faith. And by burning the Qur'an, this sends a horrible message of intolerance," Peter MacKay said Wednesday at CFB Esquimalt, B.C.
^ Brownie Points to them

I stand corrected.... news a couple of days ago claimed Obama was keeping silent, but it seems as though he finally said something:

US President Obama condemns plans to burn the Koran
BBC News - US President Obama condemns plans to burn the Koran

"And as a very practical matter, I just want him to understand that this stunt that he is talking about pulling could greatly endanger our young men and women who are in uniform," the president said.

"Look, this is a recruitment bonanza for al-Qaeda. You could have serious violence in places like Pakistan and Afghanistan... This could increase the recruitment of individuals who'd be willing to blow themselves up in American cities, or European cities," he said.

"I hope he listens to those better angels and understands that this is a destructive act that he's engaging in," the president said.

US officials say they cannot intervene as the church's actions would likely be protected by the US constitution's guarantee of freedom of speech.
^ And yet in our country, we have certain laws against hate crimes and intolerance.... if this was something towards Jewish people, it'd be anti-semitic..... I've lost all support for the Afghan war long ago and now more then ever, I believe our troops should be taken out of this disaster before these type of idiots make what NATO is fighting, turn out to be 10 times worse then ever before and drag this whole conflict right back to square one.

Taking the fight against the Americans on their soil will result in the Americans visiting all kinds of retribution on those groups... It's only a matter of time before the US gets tired of having their Constitution used against them before a guerrilla-style war is played-out in a Muslim nation.

And we've all seen how well their retribution works in solving their problems.

You speak of their constitution being used against them, yet nobody says anything when people like this idiot abuse it all to hell to make a bad situation worse.

Guerrilla-Style wars are already being played out in two Muslim nations.... where have you been for the last decade or so?

The US can no longer afford additional conflicts and wars.... their troop recruitment have been dwindling, public support has dropped, their national debt is insane and their country is still in a financial disaster with many people still out of jobs......

Then again, that does sound like a perfect recipe for starting another war..... after all, wars bring jobs and money if done right..... maybe this guy was hired to do this to keep it all going and to suck allies back into an even worse conflict then ever before.

Well we'll see what will unfold from this soon enough I guess.

Probably not the soldiers, but.....

Christian militia members charged with plots to kill police officers
Christian militia members charged with plots to kill police officers -

..... CNN reports that the federal indictment, unsealed in Detroit this morning , accuses nine people of conspiracy to commit violence against local, state and federal law enforcement officers.

The document, CNN reports, calls Hutaree an "anti-government, extremist group" and says it has been planning its attacks since 2008.

CNN says the documents charge that the group advocated luring officers into an ambush through fake 911 calls, and also discussed killing officers or their families at home.......

^ There's already a pile of these whackos running around down there.... I'm sure one or two groups took equal offense to bibles being burned.

You can always identify a legitimate church. It defines its mission as one of conversion by means of appeals to reason, rather than resorting to intimidation or casting offense on the beliefs of others.

Book burning has a bad history. It's a tool of tyrants and those of limited intellectual confidence in their own cause.

Destruction of Cathar texts (Languedoc region of France)

Detail of a Pedro Berruguete painting of a disputation between Saint Dominic of Guzman and the Albigensians (Cathars) in which the books of both were thrown on a fire, with St. Dominic's books miraculously preserved from the flames. See the whole picture.

During the 13th century, the Catholic Church waged a brutal campaign against the Cathars of Languedoc (smaller numbers also lived elsewhere in Europe), culminating in the Albigensian Crusade. Nearly every Cathar text that could be found was destroyed, in an effort to completely extirpate their heretical beliefs; only a few are known to have survived.

The Talmud (at Paris), first of many such burnings over the next centuries

In 1242, The French crown burned all Talmud copies in Paris, about 12,000, after the book was "charged" and "found guilty" in the Paris trial sometimes called "the Paris debate". This burnings of Hebrew books were initiated by Pope Gregory IX, who persuaded French King Louis IX to undertake it.

It's a lot different, burning a bible won't get you killed! Bibles get burned around the world regularly. No one notices. Not only does no one notice burning of bibles, they don't notice burning of entire churches, and christians!

The entire quote which would be relevant is:

"I do believe that in Canada we are quick to embrace people's expressions of freedom, but burning a Qur'an is no different than burning a Bible," MacKay said Wednesday.
He's obviously talking about the freedom to burn a Bible or Qur'an.

They're obviously aware of the differences you mention...that's the entire narrative that surrounds the article. In fact it's the only reason that Harper and MacKay said anything at all in public about this.

Don't get me wrong, I think the burning of the Koran idea is stupid. But let's keep things in perspective here.
He was, you just took the quote out of context, that is, you weren't keeping things in perspective.

Northern Ontario,
Our soldiers are going over there and dieing to give another country the liberty and freedoms we enjoy and here we are bending over and giving up our freedom of speech and yes...to burn books even to satify the whim of another religion...
Those soldiers must be looking at us in disgust...
Political correctness has taken us to an all time low.

I would state the obvious - The Soldiers realize that this Pastor is full of hate - What point is his making - reps ct - No he clearly shows he has no respect for another religion - Tolerance - No - he clearly show he has none.

Stunts - Yes - he has had his name in the news

Any Soldier worth his salt would not condone but condemn this act

Yes i know it has been canceled.

As I have stated but many seem to be hung up on rights, Just because you have a right does not necessarily make it right to use it at times. But many it appears do not understand that. It is the old thing again - It is my Right. Up there with being Stupid is to.

We are fighting a war, Yes we are and we have Muslims within our society - So are we fighting all Muslims in our society as well?

....the major difference being that the Imam is reaching out to other religions, and not burning their books to make statements. He is making statements about confronting extremists so that they don't control the messaging...this nutbar in Florida plays exactly into what the Imam said last night. The extemists feed off each other.

Yes, Canada is at war. and, our ally in that war is the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. So, to brand all Moslems as "other", including ordinary Canadian citizens who practise that faith, is not only nonsensical bigotry , it is contrary to fact. I know you and I are in agreement!
