I'm an anarchist. No party politics - no use for politics but I can criticize and make fun of them. If we actually lived in a democracy, I might participate but as long as we live in a corporate dictatorship, our "democracy" is a sham.

While I think you are at least partly right, Cliff, I'm also pretty cognizant of the fact that we are one of the most "democratic" countries in the world. Maybe Iceland is more so- I'm not sure about that though..

I am a Party member and think Harper is doing just fine. Let's see if every other poster here will state their affiliation. I seriously doubt many have the guts to do so.
I've been a member of the Ontario PC's since 1984. I also joined the Canadian PC's in 1984. I became a member of the Reform party in 1991 and stayed with the party through its transformation to Alliance and finally, the Conservative party.

I used to show which party I generally support in my avatar, but I removed it. As a true-blue (oops) Canadian, I didn't want to offend anyone by attempting to influence how people might vote. I also didn't want to risk damaging anyone's health by having them launch into a blood pressure-raising rant on why I would be such a low-level scumbag by having the nerve to vote for that particular party. As a Canadian, my feelings of self-esteem are first and foremost on my mind, and I felt I needed to protect myself from any disparaging comments that might make me feel like I had made a "wrong" choice. I just couldn't take it.

However, just for the record, I will go out on a limb just this once and tell you that I actually voted for our Conservative candidate in the last election. And she won. Which means she's part of the current government.

Sorry, I was hesitant to say that but as a Canadian, I felt it only fair to disclose this information in the hopes that my sense of conscious would be appeased.

Oh dear, now I'm in a personal situation of conflict between my conscience and my sense of self-esteem...

The lack of party affiliation is just as telling as having one..

Under my Avatar is no Party Name because I have no Party Affiliation..

The last Federal election I voted Independent in disgust of all major parties..

But tell me missile..

While you proudly tell us who you support monetarily , do you even know what each party stands for ? I do in as much as I can..

And although that changes. and we may forget year after year. I try to stay on top of it.. A party is more then platform and its leadership, it also has internal policy that is updated at each convention..

The most democratic country in the world (at least it was the last time I checked) is Costa Rica. They have 100% voter turnout. They have been fiercely independent as Spain found nothing to pillage as any consequence and left those who decided to migrate there alone.

100%....68%... Whats the difference?
The last time I was there was in '88. At that time they opened the flood gates to American and Canadian immigration. Could it be that the voter turn out has dropped because 32% of the population are US and Canadian expats? I don't know what the % of the population they make up, but could it be that if they don't make up 32% taht their apathy has rubbed off on the locals?

Can expats vote in their elections?

Most likely it could mean that they don't have 100% voter turnout as you stated.

Pretty simple actually.

When I was there they were basically selling citizenship for a certain amount of cash investment in the country, either in property or business. If you have citizenship, I can't see how you cannot vote.

Was just wondering...I used to be an expat in Japan but not a citizen. Costa Rica is different obviously...

Sorry.....The turnout in the 2006 national election in Costa Rica was 65.2%.

Which indicates to me a reasonably healthy democracy.....watch out when a country declares it has 100% turnout.....somebody is cheating!!!

While looking at Costa Rica, I tripped across this:

In the face of gun violence here in Costa Rica, the Ticos have kept a sane attitude toward the usefulness of firearms in the hands of good guys. Armed guards are everywhere. Motorcycle delivery guys carry guns and occasionally use them. Nobody thinks these guys are going to become mass murderers. As in the states, under strict regulation civilians here can carry weapons for self-defense; many do.
Unlike in the states, when an armed citizen actually shoots a bad guy, the papers report it. The police do not torment the surviving victim of a shootout with criminals with arrest, disarmament and a protracted legal battle for his life. If he's got his papers in order, they return his weapon and bid him a good day. La Nación, the country's largest daily, actually published a scorecard the last time an armed civilian shot and killed a pair of armed thugs. Civilians are ahead this year.
The Extremist: Victim Disarmament Neither Logical Nor Ethical

I might like Costa Rica!!!!!!

"""Canadians following Prime Minister Stephen Harper's decision to prorogue Parliament were nearly twice as likely to oppose the move as favour it, an EKOS poll suggests.

67% somewhat aware...does that mean they weren't all that excited about it? (I still can't quite figure out the "somewhat aware" term...you'd think a "yes" or "no" answer would do it, but...I guess not)

I can see the same pollster's questionnare form on say, uh, "Are you aware of your exact date of birth?" Are you...

Quite Aware?
Very Aware?
Somewhat Aware?
Not Quite Aware?
Don't Know?

By the lard t'underin...makes you wonder about the value of polls, eh?
