Civilized humans have taken themselves out of nature and created a virtual reality completely devoid of nature. Those who live in nature, are an intrinsic part of it are looked down up as 'primitive". The artificial reality of cities disconnects us from our roots and causes us to objectify nature as a commodity to be exploited. Civilization has put a values on those commodities but devalues our life support system. This will not end well as we heap our garbage onto the land, air and water.
I think wild animals tend to kill for survival. Even when they are said to kill for fun - which some appear to do at times - it is more of a built-in behavior that evolution has used to sharpen their actual hunting and fighting skills. I don't believe they can be said to decide to kill something. I don't think they understand the moral or ethical questions, or if they do they are by and large too moral to commit a wrong for any reason but life itself.
Men on the other hand are said to have eaten from the tree, understand their own mortality, and are believed to live according to a set of social customs.
Bears killing bears and men killing men are not very comparable.

Duhhhhh, you don't hunt bear with a handgun. Let's try this one more time. You're out hunting for deer, moose, whatever. You have your rifle slung over your shoulder as you trek to your hunting ground. On the way you catch a bear off-guard (or he catches you off-guard) and startle it causing to rush you. At that close range, you really haven't got time to unsling your rifle, level it, slide the bolt home, aim it and get a shot off. Unless you're one of those morons who walks around everywhere with a loaded rifle in their hands. Hence the handgun, it's quicker and easier to pull it out and start shooting, and the bear's thick skull is why one carries a .45 semi-auto and not some cruddy little .22 popgun.
Fortunately I never had to deal with that situation. I can also tell you for a fact that I'm far from the only person in Canada who has been issued a permit to carry for working in remote bear country. You know, for those times when you don't HAVE a rifle on you.
You're misinformed if you believe a hand gun is any match for a shot gun at any range but especially at short range
jim, do they still issue in bear country? that seems too easy for people in the rockies. I'd have thought that there would be alot more permits if that is all that is needed.

Currently, gun deaths are running at about 33,000 per year, of which 2/3 are suicides. That is people killing themselves, not preventable in any way by gun control.
A little over 1,000 people a year are killed in justified police shootings.

There are 300 million guns in the USA, and seizing any significant number of those would touch off a civil war, as it should. The constitution is clear, as is the duty of the citizen when the state uses force to destroy constitutional rights. Talk about gun violence!!
