The Wild Bunch.. a great film about fugitives from the increasingly civilized West trying for a final big score in Mexico.
and Once Upon a Time in the West.. the ultimate Spaghetti Western, Sergio Leone's masterwork.. with the lovely Claudia Cardinale, and its haunting score.
The latter one has, imho, the most coldly ruthless bad guy in Western film history.. with Henry Fonda as the blue eyed, soft spoken, outwardly reasonable.. psychopathic gunman.

Red Sun..a French,Italian,French western with Charles Bronson, Toshiro Mifume, Alain Deloin and Ursula Andress. Just imagine a Samurai fighting outlaws and indians!! I finally got a burned copy from my pal last week after vainly trying to find it for years:smile:

although fonda mostly played good guys, was just as good
playing the bad guy, sadistic killer type.

Some of those old ones were pretty good. Dad has three movies in a series with Terence Hill in them that are just hilarious. I liked Once Upon a Time In the West. Also "Jeremiah Johnson", "Kutenai Brown", and the "Mad Trapper" one with Charles Bronson. They seemed a bit more realistic than the Clint Eastwood spaghettis; especially that one where he got shot like 50 times and survived. Henry Fonda was an awfully good actor. So was Mitchum. The last western I saw and liked was "Open Range" with Robert Duvall and that weaselly faced guy from Waterworld.

Ironically, Jean Simmons (Big Country) who we were just discussing is dead at age 80. Another great bites the dust.

Away from "The Big Country" she was great in (off topic alert) "Guys and Dolls" as Sarah Brown.
may I recommend another way to have an enjoyable movie experience with Once Upon a Time in the West - watch a version that has the director's commentary on it. The first 15 minutes becomes a different movie - e.g. opening scene at railway is a whole mini-film that ends when the soundtrack comes on....that is something like 8-10 minutes of silence.....I believe one of the longest opening scenes without dialogue ever and no, its not at all boring - it continues until the train pulls in and blows the steam out of its engine.... then there is more great background on a homage scene to 'Shane' the handling of the introduction of henry fonda in his first role as an totally evil character.. enjoy.....
Dead Man, the Jim Jarmousch film is a real oddity. It took me 3 attempts to get past the beginning, with the camera aimed at Johnny Depp sitting in a trail for all on 15 minutes - and then it's quite a trip. Bob Mitchum's (one of my alltime favourite actors) last film appearance. Bloody marvelous soundtrack by Neil Young (one of my favourite Canadians). My best lines from the film: 'nobody can save you now' and 'who did you kill who killed you'? both lines referring to/spoken by the character Nobody, played by Ontario actor Gary Farmer.
make sure you watch the original 3:10 to yuma, much older, but still a very good movie
