I can enjoy most westerns but I absolutely cannot stand John Wayne. The guy was a terrible actor. He never played a part where he was anybody but John Wayne. He donned an eye patch in True Grit and won an Oscar. Admittedly, the Oscar was only a gold watch but it was probably his best part.

I pick and choose the wayne pics that I like, and there are
some I like a lot, but some I don't.
I really liked 'the cowboys', the one where he had to hire
a bunch of kids to take on the cattle drive, because there
were no men available, great story, and he was good in it.

I guess you and I would have to agree to disagree on this one. I've watched most of John Wayne movies and don't recall a bad one. The Searchers was very good, as was Rio Bravo- Walter Brennan playing "Stumpy" just "slayed" me in that one. North to Alaska was very good and Wayne played the part well in that one too. I think WAyne probably had his limitations in who he could act as, but where a big fightin' rough and tumble, whisky drinkin' guy he was good- in a game of Polo at Buckingham Palace maybe not so good or starring as a figure skater.

Hey we don't have to agree on everything. John Wayne could act as anyone......as long as it was John Wayne. I once saw Alec Guinness play six different parts in the same movie and you had to look for them. It wasn't so much make up, but the different characters that actor could call up.

Good points.

Another point JLM, is that you could bring your kids to any John Wayne movie. You can't say that about all movie makers.

Absolutely- good family fun. In those days the general public didn't accept filth and garbage- today a lot of people have grown complacent instead of just recognizing it for what it is. There is no talent involved in repeating the F word forty seven times in one sentence.

Now you got my attention. Why, back in '59 (for example) you'd be hard pressed to find any vulgarity in the flicks, especially the westerns. Imagine Audy Murphy or the Duke walking around spewing out the F word? Hard to picture...they had to rely on acting ability to get through the movie.

Yes, that's why I couldn't watch 'deadwood', the f word
came out so often it was boring and fake sounding, and
didn't fit in the the true western style, and the characters
seemed shabby because of it.
They seemed to be saying, that is the way it is 'today' so get
used to it, 'sorry' not me, 'CLICK'.

"The Sundowners" - (Robert Mitchum, Peter Ustinov, Sean Connery and Deborah Kerr) was an excellent movie. Best thing Mitchum ever starred in.

Thought of a couple more. Surprised I did not remember Little Big Man - quite possibly the best western ever made. Nonstop action and a fantastic plot along with a marvelous array of characters. Dustin Hoffman stars.

Also Cat Ballou - Jane Fonda at her nubile best along with Lee Marvin - great action.

I agree that the Sundowners was also a great film - but it wasn't really a Western unless you count Australia as West. However, that gives me the chance to nominate the Hellions - a version of High Noon shot in South Africa starring Lionel Jeffries as a brutal gang leader up against lone lawman Richard Todd. And as long as South Africa is now in the mix - How about Zulu?

Jane Fonda at her nubile best...
OH YEAH! She was a seriously hot babe in her prime, and still looks pretty damn fine to me.

The older I get, the more attractive I find accomplished older women. Funny how that works...

But I still think the best western movie ever made was My Name is Nobody. She wasn't in it, but her father was.
