I don't know if this poem/story was ever made into a movie.
A guy in the South during the American civil war left his wife and home to fight in the war and after seeing many horrors he was captured and a rope put around his neck and then pushed off a bridge. The rope breaks and he ends up in the river and the rest of the story is about his ordeal in getting back to his wife, finally, he gets to the road leading to the house and his wife sees him and comes running toward him and just moments before they reach other the rope loses all it's slack and his neck is broken. Can't recall the title.
Other than that, 'Paint Your Wagon' cause of the drunk horse.
