YEp, there's a price (ripoff) for COLD beer and wine. I made my own wine for a few years but gave it up. I can't remember all the different ones I made (from the wine kit) but I remember Zinfandel was the first I made, not particularly memorable, and I made Shiraz once or twice, nothing wrong with it.

We made our own years ago, once, then gave away all of our equipment, so now
we just have to bring the bottles when time is up, and they help us bottle it.

As I stated in earlier post, we have one glass of wine everyday, (was told it is good
for the health), and don't like the cost, so we are having a batch of wine made.
We chose a mix of shiraz and zinfandel, which was on the list at the winemaking
shop. Any comments on that choice?
We bought a bottle of shiraz a few times and enjoyed, but have never seen the one I have ordered, at the liquor store.
And I also noticed quite a big difference in prices from the liquor store to the
wine and beer outlets. The shirz was $4 more at the w & b store.

You make your own wine? That is great! I tried to make some kind of red wine once. I was given a kit for Christmas (not sure why as I don't drink!) and thought that I was doing really well until one day I checked on it and it had exploded! Red wine everywhere! I had to repaint!:lol:8O And that was my last attempt, I gave my kit away to a friend!:-?

I once sent a kid home to wash his feet. After setting his shoes out the front door. The smell was like that parmesan cheese odour. He went home and did so. Came back with another pair of shoes. His mother called laughing. I have been telling him 13 year old then. That he has to shower more. Boys some how feel that at this age there is no need anymore? But, she said those were my shoes
he was wearing. Military Boots and wool socks mmmm that creates a nice smell after sweating all day. Girls do notice your feet boys. Sandals and all. It is polite
to take them off. Why walk outdoors and pick up all these germs and trapse them through your home. I take a small pair slippers where ever I go. And keep them washed. Don't get me started on feet.

The problem with making your own wine (or beer) is that you cannot make one or two bottles; you have to make 15 or 10 bottles. So unless one is a heavy drinker or one entertains on a massive scale, it isn’t worth it.

Incidentally, if you had tried to make white wine (instead of red), at least you wouldn't have to repaint.

With the exception of our 'one glass of wine daily', we are non drinkers too.
that's funny, wonder why it exploded. We just made our own at home once.
This time it is being made at wine making store, we just take our bottles there
when it is time to fill them.

Actually a thin pair of cotton/nylon socks in your work boots or sneakers will establish life and odour much faster than a thicker sock which affords some barrier and absorbtion, at least that's my forty year experiance with the situation.

It is not that rare, talloola. I think it can happen also when you are making beer. I don’t know the reason for it, perhaps something to do with fermentation. Maybe the gases released as a result of the fermentation stay bottled up due to some reason and eventually explode.

For a few years I was drinking a glass of red wine daily as it was recommended for health, so made my own, about 30 bottles a batch and it would last me quite a few months, but that's not a problem as wine has a fairly long shelf life.

JLM, I think they say that one drink of any alcohol will do, not just the red wine. Red wine is rich in antioxidants, but those can be had in tomatoes, berries etc.

But I think any (one) drink of alcohol is beneficial. I try to have one drink a day.

Funny you should mention that, when I told my doc I was drinking a glass of red wine daily for heart health, he said "Oh that's good- Welch's grape drink accomplishes exactly the same thing".

JLM, I think he was talking of antioxidants, which can be had equally well in grape juice, grapes, tomatoes etc. But I think alcohol itself has some beneficial effects (or so I have read).

I dare say, other liquor has qualities not found in red wine. Actually when I was a drinker, after half a dozen beer or so my mental capacity was much improved as far as things like planning or "stumbling" upon good ideas. You just never want to kid yourself that your reaction time is improved.

This diversion from the original topic reminds me of the stories I heard about the dandies during the Great Depression who were drinking champagne from ladies' shoes.

Was the champagne white or red? Cooled or room temperature?
