This diversion from the original topic reminds me of the stories I heard about the dandies during the Great Depression who were drinking champagne from ladies' shoes.

Was the champagne white or red? Cooled or room temperature?

Yukon Jack, for your information, the custom is still prevalent in Europe. When we visited Austria more than 25 years ago, we attended what was dubbed as a ‘boot party’. The glasses were shaped in the form of ladies’ shoes.

Those Austrians!

I remember when I was there, that a five liter glass boot of beer went around the table from mouth to mouth, and the person who was SECOND last to empty the boot had to buy the next round. Devilishly ingenious!

At least none of the beer was enhanced by Limburger flavour as the champagne drunk from ladies' slippers.

So you participated in a ‘boot party’, did you? I did. Anyway, the glass was not an actual ladies shoe, but a glass replica of one. also, there was a penalty for splillng beer (very easy to do when the glass is shaped like a boot).
