I think it depends upon the wine. Same with beer. Guinness I prefer chilled. Our local stout I prefer room temp. Wife likes her Shiraz slightly chilled and her Riesling room temp.
Some expensive grog (love that term) is very nice, but at times there are cheaper ones that are just as good or good enough to pass without spending the extra $50 for the expensive stuff. Appleton Estate rum I drink isn't the most expensive rum, for instance, but it's close enough and quite a bit cheaper than Pusser's.

I've had 2 bullies over the years and my bitch was an amazing wee girl, I called her Peppy :)


Only one. (now) Chihuahua, medium size; not the teacup. You can see her nose in my avatar. She's a sociopath, but she likes us. Go figure.

I too prefer chilled wine, has to be cold. NON alcoholic dry white.

Kiwi, whites are usually drunk chilled. As for non alcoholic beverages, anything goes.

Wine with ice cubes? How odd! Watering it down so to speak, yuck!


Indeed, Kiwi. What is this world coming to? Incidentally, do they make any good wines in New Zealand? There are some excellent Australian wines (Such as Shiraz).

Shiraz is the grape. Australia does produce some good wines and Shiraz is one of them, but that grape is grown all over the world now, including in Canada.

The serious red wine drinkers I know say 16-18C is more appropriate than modern room temperature, for the exact reasons you're discussing.

Are you paying attention Murgy? Actually about 4-5C suits me perfectly. If I want a hot drink I'll drink tea or coffee...............:lol::lol:

lol... I know you like it even colder. And I see nothing wrong with that.

Here's a neat article that talks about the way the flavour changes. It says nothing about a red turning to sheer poison as it chills btw... lol...

The English are not much of wine drinkers, JLM (recently they have started drinking wine). In the old days, wine was mostly restricted to aristocracy.

The drink of the common man in England in old days was beer, warm beer. Warm beer is still very popular today. The cold beer, like we drink here is caller laager, and is despised by some as ‘ladies’ beer’.

But England doesn’t have much of a history of wine making or wine drinking, French and Italians do.

That may be, TenPenny, but that still means white wine is served chilled (with a few exceptions).

red wine should be put IN the cooler about 20 min before serving.

Now I never heard of this one. Red wine should be decanted and allowed to breath. But put it in a cooler? That is sacrilege (at least I would never do that).

I know Shiraz is a grape, Juan. But Australia does produce Shiraz wine. Actually Shiraz is a city in Iran, so I wonder if the grape comes from Shiraz, Iran.

So what is the room temperature, karrie? I don't know about you, but in our house we keep room temperature at 18 in winter, 23 in summer. Which is not really all that far from 16 to 18.

I don't see why there has to be a "proper" way of drinking wine (some drink it straight from the bottle covered by a brown bag). Tea is drunk many different ways why the big deal about wine? I thought drinking wine was supposed to be enjoyable- isn't it more important to enjoy it than worry about some temperature code?

Thanks, Juan. So apparently there was something to my speculation. The link you gave says that there is circumstantial evidence that Shiraz grape came from Shiraz, Iran, but no proof.

Hell yes. I should have said so. Alexander the Great could have brought the grape to France..;-):p

As I stated in earlier post, we have one glass of wine everyday, (was told it is good
for the health), and don't like the cost, so we are having a batch of wine made.
We chose a mix of shiraz and zinfandel, which was on the list at the winemaking
shop. Any comments on that choice?
We bought a bottle of shiraz a few times and enjoyed, but have never seen the one I have ordered, at the liquor store.
And I also noticed quite a big difference in prices from the liquor store to the
wine and beer outlets. The shirz was $4 more at the w & b store.

I have no comment on your choice, I'm sure it's one you must taste to know if you'll like it or not. It sounds reasonable enough... blend wines can be lovely.

As for the prices... what people won't pay for snob appeal! lol. Okay, all kidding aside, wine and beer stores charge you for selection. They go to much greater lengths to have a wider variety of choices available. If your wine of choice is available at the liquor store, then they're not worth it imo, but, if you have a particular vintage you enjoy (like me, I've been looking for Lumbresco, and am giving up soon and having it ordered in), then the w and b stores may be your only choice.

YEp, there's a price (ripoff) for COLD beer and wine. I made my own wine for a few years but gave it up. I can't remember all the different ones I made (from the wine kit) but I remember Zinfandel was the first I made, not particularly memorable, and I made Shiraz once or twice, nothing wrong with it.
