Want to Save the Whales? Stop Buying Japanese

Protests against Japan's continuing violation of the international ban on whaling seem to have had little affect on Japan. The country continues to allow hunting of whales under the guise of "scientific" research. Most of the whales from these "science" expeditions seem to end up on Japanese dinner plates. However, there is something that the Japanese are highly sensitive to as was clearly illustrated by the head of Toyota in his pilgrimage to the US to apologize for defects in his company's products. Whaling is a very tiny part of Japan's GNP. If consumers refused to buy Japanese and let the Japanese know why they were doing it, almost certainly the Japanese would suddenly decide that these whaling "research" expeditions were no longer necessary. Such a boycott would not have to be on a large scale. Even a drop of just one percent in Japan's overseas sales would eclipse the value of all whales taken by Japan each year. Money talks and the Japanese have shown they are most adept at listening to money.

What a great idea. We could offer to replace whale with our beef. They could take all the money they spend on whaling and give it to us and we could ship them an equivalent amount of live or dead cows as market value allows. Win/win all around.

Yeah but in the mean time, where are we going to get our electronics from?
The Japanese are not the only electronics manufacturers. Just look at the back of any TV or stereo these days, China, Malaysia, Korea... lots of different places.

Then we won't have the funniest show around to watch... Whale Wars.

I love watching those clowns that call themselves the Sea Sheppards.

Cause and effect through History.

When you hear a voice of dissent. Listen. It could be God talking.

When words are'n't listened to, actions become necessary. You can affect a nation through trade faster than through guns, and its a might cleaner....

Now, trade is not a weapon or leverage, but swaps like mentioned by the Staff are the future.

Whale tastes better than our (feedlot) beef.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society makes more money protesting whaling than all the whalers in the world combined.

No kidding? I had no idea. I would imagine that running a ship like that would cost a bundle. Too bad they have no clue on how to run a ship. I know that the new high speed "Bat Boat" they got for this past season ended up on the bottom of the Antartic Ocean.

I suppose they removed all the fuels and lubricants from it before it sank, to avoid pollution, right? :-|

They do it every year so the demand is there.
They do it every year because the Japanese Govt subsidises the whole shebang, fuel and wages for crew and artificially low prices in stores for a product that fewer and fewer people eat, only Japanese over 50 yo will touch the stuff.

Of course Japan has a large population of older people so politically the whole thing flies but in the long term....

Did you know that the Japanese even buy Whale meat from Iceland?

Few in Iceland will eat the stuff either with it's rank sour tang but the Japanese Govt buys Icelandic product and -once again-offers it for sale @ subsidised prices in Japanese supermarkets.

There was even a Govt programme where Whale meat was served to kids in schools for lunch but that collapsed because kids hated the stuff I know a woman here in Vancouver who remembers it on the menu.

It's unsustainable cause the whales will be extinct. Boycotts and the like might help to "save the whales", which I believe this is all about.
You have No Clue-there are more Whales now than there have been for decades so many Humpbacks and Greys that disposing of their carcasses is becoming a problem.

After having spent a bundle (relatively) on a special lamp so MIL could read and seeing it die as a result of a Chinese electronics part, I'd rather get electronics from Lower Slobovia than China.

BTW, people, Japan is one nation which thinks nothing of hunting something to extinction and then moving on to another species. It's the ultimate consumer. The Bluefin tuna is also down to about 15% of the natural population mostly because the Japanese love eating it.
BTW, Norway and Iceland are also hunting cetaceans.

Some whales have rebounded, others haven't. When I was younger living up North I ate raw Beluga whale meat with the locals. Muktuk. But I wouldn't eat it now until we know more about whale and dolphin intelligence. If they are smarter than a pig they should be protected.

Unfortunately determining intelligence is difficult. In some situations dolphins don't seem very intelligent at all:

All countries do that--remember Atlantic Cod stocks?

What's the difference?
