Not to downplay your accuracy, but it seemed that this was easy to predict. The first goal had to be to discredit him, and by reading this thread, it seems to have worked well.
The simplest minds are the easiest to manipulate.

Re: Wikileaks' Whistleblower Subjected to Inhumane Conditions

I'm sure the right wing loonies would love to. Just remember that red neck hippies shoot back.

Easy now.... :)

I just think accusations of torture are ludicrous, if the fact that the guy is held in 23 hour isolation is their only evidence of same.

Especially in a prison full of guys that would eviscerate him in a nanosecond, given the opportunity........and that's just the guards!!! :0

Treason is not a crime that inspires tough guy admiration or respect.....just the opposite.

As for the "heroics" of the crime, I think it is terrifically, in fact awesomely niave to expect nations to carry on their diplomacy in the open. Just ridiculous......and the exposure of diplomatic notes is destabilizing and dangerous in the extreme.

Follow this analogy; would you, at work or in your personal relationships, like to have everything you ever said about your boss, your co-workers, your friends, your relative publically exposed? That means criticisms, gossip, opinions...........etc.

If you would, than I must confess a belief you are either Saint Cliff of the Chat Room, or a psyhco.

Anyone normal would say of course not! A normal human being can not negotiate human relationships with perfect honesty and full disclosure.

Why would you assume it is different between nations?

Who has been charged with treason? Sticking it to "the man" earns huge respect.

Re: Wikileaks' Whistleblower Subjected to Inhumane Conditions

I think context is important. If someone had leaked these types of cables before the Iraq invasion, it could have averted a war crime which has since killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people or led to war crime charges. That would be patriotic and just. In this case, I still don't see anything beneficial resulting from these leaks. Lots more cable still exist, so I'm reserving judgment. But if all these cables do is embarrass people, then I don't see the point.

An example of a leak which serves a purpose would be the leaked video of a American gunship shooting journalists and innocent bystanders. It proves the US military lied about the event and tried to cover it up. I think who ever leaked that video did the American people a service. Too many people just believe the American government without question, when we should all be skeptical. Also, I think the families of the people killed deserved to know how these people died.

Re: Wikileaks' Whistleblower Subjected to Inhumane Conditions

Is this the first time a trumped up sex scandal has been used to railroad someone or has the manual changed?

Nor is it the first time that some egotistical asshole has raped a woman.

Conservatives love railroading.

Captain, I thought a person was considered innocent until proven guilty (unless they are lefty, pinko, fags, of course.) Manning has not even been charged. Like I said, the right wing can "Bite Me!"

What's wrong Cliffy? Are you choked-up 'cause one of your idols has fallen from grace?

BTW - It's always a challenge to charge someone when they flee the country.

Rest assured though, on the "bite me" thingy, Manning will be doing lots of pillow biting in the foreseeable future.

Re: Wikileaks' Whistleblower Subjected to Inhumane Conditions

Rape during consensual sex? How is that possible?

Besides, the women aren't even accusing Assange of rape. Both were seen after the alleged events enjoying Assange's company. It was only after they realized that they both had sex Assange that they became angry and complained to authorities.

Assange never fled the country. After a short investigation, and an interrogation, he was released without charges. He moved on to his next event, which was not in Sweden. Assange was charged a few months later, immediately after he started leaking docs.

Anyone who can't smell a rat here, must have no sense of smell.

Assange is guilty of being a cad, a jerk and even an asshole, but rape for consensual sex? I don't think so.

Think of the precedent if this charge sticks. Anyone who lies to get sex or screws around on their partner and pisses them off, could be similarly charged.

I agree the rape charges, and Sweden's laws on sexual assault, are completely ludicrous.

Or was it after accepting the cash in the brown paper bag? They could have already been on payroll as well. It's well known female agents will boink someday to set them up.

Yeah, this is horrible on so many levels. I think Bradley Manning deserves a Presidential pardon. That is, if we in the US didn't have a President that had a raging prosecutorial zeal against leakers of government information. Government information that shouldn't have been classified in the first place.

That doesn't make sense either. The women complained before Assange released the docs.

A Swedish prosecutor revived the charges several months after they were dropped.... coincidentally right after Assange started releasing docs. I think someone should check his bank account.

Most likely, Assange drew the attention of some very powerful people when he released the docs. They took a deep dive into Assange's past and this was the best dirt they could find.

What Bradley Manning deserves is a firing squad......if he is guilty.

What he will get is about 50 years in prison, if he is convicted.

You can see both Anna Ardin and Sofia Wieln on video at his Stockholm press conference. He met Wilen at this press conference.

Kinda funny actually. I have a co-worker who used to be in the army and he seems to be a pretty keen guy except when every once and a while the military complex gives him a snag. He is actually very much in favour of freedom of information and the like until he found out about wikileaks. He didn't denounce Manning but his response to the July release of the docs was: "but the enemy!" I almost lol'd, but had to hold it in.

Whether it's Mussolini or Ghandi or even Obama, it wouldn't matter to these people. Yer country comes first, derp derp derp.

Indeed, nationalist groupthink would be the only thing making people want to kill a person or lock him up for their rest of his life, just because he let some inconsequential diaries of diplomats get made public.
