2 questions come to mind.
How many police killings the US?
Hard to answer. There is no requirement for reporting, and national statistics are partial at best.

How many indicted and convicted?
Indictments are rare, convictions moreso. Such as do occur generally do so when the shooting is not in the line of duty (e.g., a person who happens to be a police officer shooting his girlfriend in an argument).

OK, so now the right-wing meme is that Tamir Rice deserved to die because his father has a history of domestic violence.

And it turns out that the cops' account of the incident is pure fiction.

But for video: Tamir Rice edition - The Washington Post

Surprised this one didn't catch on more. Didn't hit the zeitgeist like Michael Brown did. Callled that one wrong. I thought people would be more pissed about the 12 year old. Go figger.

I am surprised as well. In this case, the cops appear to be clearly in the wrong. Not so after initial incorrect reports in Michael Brown case. Perhaps it's too cold to protest in Cleveland?

He was clearly a violent, dangerous felon, a drug user and a bad person. And with a name like Tamir, probably a Muslim terrorist. I'm glad he's dead.

You're such a troll..

Pretty defensive of Tamir Rice on another thread, in your usual unprofessional Internet Lawyer way..

Didn't watch the video, did you?

Heck, even the cops didn't claim he pointed it at them. But you go ahead on and make up whatever facts your stupid needs.

Oh, and by the way, this is a Canadian board about Canadian issues, so why are you running your mouth about American killings?

///////////////////////////////////////////

When we were 12 we played with real guns. 22s mostly some fairly high powered pellet rifles for the time.

...and you're still around.. your parents obviously explained you don't point guns at police.

Guess the 12 year old kid lacked parental supervision.. so blame the parents..

Stops right on top of him, would anyone do that with a threat of a gun? 2 -3 seconds and bang.

You're such a troll..

You mean like when I bitched and moaned about somebody commenting on American law in a thread about American law in the US-America forum?

Ridiculous twat.

Hell with you. I'm in Munich, so by definition I'm having a better day than you are.

Regarding his age, how young are the kids that get initiated into gangs? I'm not saying the boy in this case is in a gang, but to say that just because someone is 12 years old doesn't make them a threat is wrong.

You watched the video, the officer stated he gave directions to the kid, 3 times.
Must be a fast talker is my opinion.Ya think the Officer is full of it?
He pulled up right on top of him, an armed individual, rather stupid move by the Officer. Would you agree?

And the first batches of information the Police put out were about the father and his record. Hhmmm, serving an agenda of providing the public with information to sway opinion. You agree?

Family filed lawsuit claiming officers reckless

A federal lawsuit filed by the boy's family against the city and police said two officers waited four minutes before anyone provided medical help to Tamir.

The lawsuit also said the two officers acted recklessly when they confronted Tamir in a terrifying manner, driving within feet of him and firing within seconds. Samaria Rice said the officer who fired the fatal shot should be convicted of a crime.

The officer's father has said his son had no other choice because he thought the weapon was real.

I can say 'show me your hands' 3 times in maybe 1-2 seconds. How about you?

Anyway, maybe the cop said what he said he did. The window might even have been down I dunno, At any rate, the choppy video is time compressed so from13 sec to about 20 sec (youtube time) there was plenty of time. The kid stands up around 12 sec and moves toward where the cruiser is coming from so could have either heard the cops, seen them or both, I dunno. Then as we know he reaches for his waistband and the possible buckaroo shoots him. That's all I know or can see.

Too bad the dispatcher hadn't told them it might have been a toy gun. But the cops never knew that.

Well, the thing is. Mike Brown was a justified shooting, how this looks very much like it wasn't.

Ohio grand jury clears police in fatal shooting of 12 year-old
Kim Palmer, REUTERS
First posted: Monday, December 28, 2015 02:33 PM EST | Updated: Monday, December 28, 2015 07:40 PM EST
CLEVELAND - A grand jury cleared two Cleveland police officers on Monday in the November 2014 fatal shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who was brandishing a toy gun in a park, and a prosecutor said there were a series of mistakes but no criminal activity.
The decision drew calls on social media for protests around the country and a special prosecutor days after another fatal shooting by Chicago police of two black residents increased pressure on that department and Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
The Ohio grand jury had heard weeks of testimony on the Rice shooting, which occurred within seconds after police reached a park next to a Cleveland recreation center in response to reports of a suspect with a gun. Rice died the next day.
The shooting was one of several that have fueled scrutiny of police use of deadly force, particularly against minorities. The officers are white and Rice was black.
Rice was holding a replica handgun when Officer Timothy Loehmann shot him within seconds of reaching the park in a squad car driven by his partner, Frank Garmback.
"Simply put, given this perfect storm of human error, mistakes and miscommunications by all involved that day, the evidence did not indicate criminal conduct by police," Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty told a news conference.
Police radio personnel gave officers a description of the suspect's clothing but did not convey that a 911 caller had said the suspect was probably a juvenile and the gun may not be real. Those errors "were substantial contributing factors to the tragic outcome," McGinty said.
On Monday evening, two dozen protesters escorted by police cars walked 3 miles (5 km) in freezing rain from the recreation center to the station where the officers were assigned chanting, "Indict, convict and send the killer cops to jail, the whole damn system is guilty as hell."
A notice taped to the door said the station was closed.
"This is ridiculous," Terri Tolefree said of the grand jury decision. "This country is so backward."
Later, a dozen people held hands and prayed in a gazebo at the park where Rice was shot.
Rice's family has filed a civil lawsuit over his death. It also demanded the officers be charged, a special prosecutor handle the case and the U.S. Justice Department investigate.
"Tamir's family is saddened and disappointed by this outcome - but not surprised," family attorneys said in a statement.
The Justice Department and FBI have been monitoring the investigation and will continue an independent review of Rice's death, a spokesman said.
McGinty said an enhanced security camera video showed Rice was reaching for the gun, which shoots plastic pellets, when the squad car pulled up next to him.
In a statement to the grand jury, Loehmann said he yelled for Rice to show his hands and saw him pull a gun from his waistband before the officer fired. Loehmann and Garmback also said they were concerned the armed suspect might enter the recreation center.
The officers have been on restricted duty since the shooting and will remain so through an administrative review, police said.
Rice either intended to hand over the gun or show the officers it was not real, McGinty said, "but there was no way for the officers to know that."
The Airsoft replica of a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun usually has an orange tip on it, but Rice's gun did not. Prosecutors showed a standard handgun side-by-side with a replica at the news conference.
McGinty also called on makers of replica guns to do more to make them easier to distinguish from actual firearms.
