Should new denver have cell phones?

Of course tourism benefits them. If there were none, New Denver would dry up and blow away. I think there are places around town that would be safer and give better coverage. Telus just doesn't want to build another tower. Anyway, this is a complicated issue that people who do not live in New Denver could not possibly know that much about reading mainstream media biased reporting. These people have their reasons and it is their problem, not anybody else'.

Yep, that's the bottom line.

I still won't. Food cooked in those things are tasteless compared to stoves. Then again, food cooked on an electric stove is tasteless compared to a wood cook stove.
For one thing - it depends on what you are cooking. For those of us who prefer salted veggies, the micro-wave is great because there is no need to add salt. Stove top cooking requires salt for flavour. I don't know how food cooked over a wood stove could possibly taste any different than an electric or even a gas stove. The wood stove is just something you have no control over the heat of. It's either too hot or too cold and generally speaking, I think food cooked via stove (cook) top depends on the "cook" for it's flavour rather than the stove itself. I would agree that in most cases micro-waves are best for re-heating food rather than cooking it but it does have some use. Totally screws up most meat. Wood stoves are great in winter just because they are like a fire place to cuddle up to. We used to have breakfast around the oven door.

If New Denver would dry up and blow away without tourists and cell phone use benefits the tourists, then N.D. residents better have another look at whether or not they want them there.

Man,if peep's only knew how many radio waves were going through them at any time, they would be surprised.

As far as search and rescue is concerned, seeing how it's in the mountains then cell service should be mandatory,an emergency 911 call by someone getting mauled by a bear could save someones life with cell service.

Plus I dont think too many tourists would make a return visit if they cant phone home while driving.

Strange, now I know two people who have that thought.

Apparently there is a big squabble going on in the West Kootenay. Telus wants to establish cell phone coverage, some people don't want it. What is forcing the people who don't want it to have it?
I like what TP said; I don't want it so you can't have it.

Silly buggers.

Damn ring tones...

It must be nice to live in a place where you don't have to suffer dreadful ring tones.

I love commuting to work on the London Underground - no cell phone coverage deep underground. I can read my book away from ring tones and without having to listen to half a pointless conversation - and 99% of them are pointless.

But even that may change sometime soon.:angry3:

Yes, it would almost seem from the conversations you hear in public places on cell phones that the gadgets cause stupidity or brain damage or both.

I think the folks in New Denver are on the right track...I'm not sure of their motives but they are entitled to voice their opposition to a cell phone tower. It could be they're worried about Electromagnetic Fields (EMF), or perhaps they just want to maintain their current lifestyles. That in itself could be a tourist attraction...I can see it all now - "Relax in our cell-free zone!"

Finding "different and interesting" cultural experiences ranks high on the average tourist's list of things to do, so perhaps New Denver is on the right track here.

Another thought on the tourism aspect of the debate...Singapore, which is a pretty successful tourism destination, banned chewing gum many years ago in an effort to clean up the streets. (Hot weather + discarded chewing gum on street = mess) Quirky? Yes. Weird? Sure. Are their streets clean? Yes. Is tourism healthy? Yep. Singapore stands out as a clean, safe tourist destination to many visitors from all over the world.

The point is, having no cell phone service in N.D. likely wouldn't have any negative impact on the tourists that go through there (which most do...it's basically a "wide spot in the road to somewhere else." I don't think they're considered to be a "tourist DESTINATION" so I believe it's basically a "gas and go" place. (Just my opinion and no offence intended to New Denver!)

Maybe Telus should simply maintain a couple of nice pay phones there and leave it at that. Besides, if you're driving along through the mountains and just have to make a cell phone call, the range would be limited anyway...I think it's a "line of sight" issue...if your phone can't see the tower, you ain't gonna' get consistent service as you motor down the road. There are lots of mountains around there to get in the way.

I rarely use mine, mostly for work and could never live in a city because I cant take more then a day there without getting to the point of allmost grabbing someones cell and stomping it into the ground.
Why do people have to yell when their on them?

Telus finally built a decent tower here but it's the biggest bloody eyesore in town and its right on main street. Before that peeps from 300 miles away calling here had their phones go through an analog and not digital system,so anyone with a scanner could hear everyones cell calls.
Not many folks were aware of this, their phone was about secure as an old 900 mhz bag phone.

clear cut logging in B.C.;-)

A stressed-out person hurrying down Yonge St. in downtown Toronto, desperately trying to peck out a text message on his/her Blackberry and walking off the curb into the side of a fast-moving truck. The resulting mess is an eyesore...and a completely preventable one!

Ya,it's pretty crazy,I see kids walking to school and their texting, peeps coming at me on the highway in my lane and their texting.

I heard a good one over beers with my buddy yesterday,a friends wife somehow got the right info off her hubbys cell phone and used some computer program to track his movements on a map with the gps. Apparently she could track his every movement when he worked out of town, now she filed for divorce and will take everything she can from him.

Jeez, there's another good reason to ditch the cell phone. How did people ever get along before these things came along? Maybe they actually had to think a bit!

A cell phone is a tool; if you're too stupid to use it properly, don't blame the phone.

Amen to that one! I actually have one but nobody has the number. I keep it around for highway travel, in case of emergency.

They can be a lifesaver for sure and are mandatory in my work in case you get hurt.

I know what I did before cell phones,I walked out of the bush lots leaving my truck stuck.
