They can be a lifesaver for sure and are mandatory in my work in case you get hurt.

I know what I did before cell phones,I walked out of the bush lots leaving my truck stuck.

Yep, they definitely have their place. I used to be a salesman roaring around the Prairies, putting lotsa' miles on the company car in a year. Used to wear out a vehicle every year or so. A cell phone would have come in handy a few times (accident scenes, etc.). On the other hand, I would have had to dodge more butt-heads talkin' and textin' on the road. Hmm...not sure if the cell phone would have been good or bad.

TenPenny said it best...it's a tool (and so are some cell phone users!)

The problem isn't the cell phone, it's all the talking that people think is necessary these days.

I agree. Maybe they're lonely and need lots of "noise" to make them feel more secure. Or maybe they can't string a series of thoughts together and have them come out sounding like a semi-coherent conversation to those of us who have to listen to it. Or perhaps by talking a lot, they think they're actually accomplishing something worthwhile, thus reinforcing their all-important and much talked-about self-esteem. Whatever...they ("they" being the ones that talk a lot on cell phones) seem to revel in yakking their bloody heads off without a whit of consideration for those around them who are forced to listen to their seemingly never-ending stream of "noise."

Guess I'm gettin' too old to tolerate what appears to me to be the result of something bad that got into the gene pool.

...So why would New Denver not want cell phone service? They just might be smarter than the rest of the so-called "civilized world."

Flying used to drive me nuts, the plane was still rolling and folks just had to hit send on the pretexted message they were working on,or they start yelling as they got that oh so important call in to see if the cat hacked up a hairball or something insignificant,I usually fake being very startled when someone does this and jump back causing them to jump back.it's good for a laugh.

My mom lost a friend to cancer from the old cell phones. A real estate agent. So my mom won't use one. I have one, but it annoys me and I talk little on it (although I do text hubby a lot when he's out of town and I'm sitting in swim practises, etc., bored out of my skull). The funny part though, is that the people who gripe the loudest about cell phones, are the ones who freak out the worst if mine is off for half an hour and they can't reach me. lol.

Well, the loss of your Mom's friend is no laughing matter. Did the doctors actually pin the cause of death down to the use of a cell phone? I've read extensively on the dangers of cell phones and I'm pretty convinced there is something to the dangers of using one a lot.

Silly comments when you don't know the details. The tower would be right in the middle of a residential area. These people have dozens of studies that show probable cause of serious health issues. There are safer places in the area, but for convenience sake (economic) Telus insists on using an existing CBC tower. Cell phones are known to cause brain tumors from excessive use. Like anything else, used in moderation, cell phones wouldn't be a problem, but it has become a cultural phenomenon and people abuse them to their own detriment.
Further to you comment on health risks associated with towers, Cliffy, I read an interesting article in the NY Times about studies being done on bees. Apparently, their is some cause for concern that the bees are adversely affected by signals being sent out from cell-phone towers. As bees are responsible for the pollination of food crops, for one, this latest news is gathering more than a bit of interest among food producers.

Perhaps some of you people should learn how to ignore the little musical things phones emit nowadays. Our landlines chirp like crickets but I don't care. If they chirp and I don't feel like answering, I don't. Unless someone's really loud and boisterous or something in a restaurant, I don't care what they are chatting about on the phone. It's none of my business.

Another thought on the tourism aspect of the debate...Singapore, which is a pretty successful tourism destination, banned chewing gum many years ago in an effort to clean up the streets. (Hot weather + discarded chewing gum on street = mess) Quirky? Yes. Weird? Sure. Are their streets clean? Yes. Is tourism healthy? Yep. Singapore stands out as a clean, safe tourist destination to many visitors from all over the world.

The point is, having no cell phone service in N.D. likely wouldn't have any negative impact on the tourists that go through there (which most do...it's basically a "wide spot in the road to somewhere else." I don't think they're considered to be a "tourist DESTINATION" so I believe it's basically a "gas and go" place. (Just my opinion and no offence intended to New Denver!)

Maybe Telus should simply maintain a couple of nice pay phones there and leave it at that. Besides, if you're driving along through the mountains and just have to make a cell phone call, the range would be limited anyway...I think it's a "line of sight" issue...if your phone can't see the tower, you ain't gonna' get consistent service as you motor down the road. There are lots of mountains around there to get in the way.

Telus maintain a couple of pay phones????? Surely you jest, Telus can't be relied upon to maintain a single working pay phone in our local town which is on HWY 97, so the idea that they would do so in New Denver is simply laughable. Sorry, countryboy, the only thing Telus seems capable of doing these days is to entertain us with their commercials. LOL!

I would suspect this is not as much about New Denver getting Cell Phones coverage as much as Telus adding extra network ( Canada Wide ) coverage so it can state it has as good if not better coverage as Rogers. The more they can link and add to the present coverage the more they can sell the "total" package.

It is also not cost effective to keep pay phones online today. How many times do we come up to these phones that they have been damaged and are out of service. The cost of upkeep is extremely high compared to making YOU keep your phone stay in service..

Everyone knows the $$$ is in Cell service and extra fees.. Add to that the fact you can now add the service of Wireless Cable Like services and Telus is laughing in the region..

The other thing is that there is a tremendous amount of water and wastewater treatement equipment that uses cellular modems to communicate with the central plant (to give but one example). While I doubt any of this is in use in New Bumfuk BC, it is one reason that cellular coverage is useful.

It's amazing how many people have Telus aircards for their laptops(me included) so you can have internet anywhere.Starting to see more vehicles with mounts in them for the computer.

Now peeps surf the net while cruising down the highway.

Those are called M2M ( Machine to Machine ) can also use Satellite communications becoming much more cost effective with Orbcomm making a new pitch with their system in this market. There will always be areas that Cellular cannot reach in every country / geographic area.
