A Radioactive Nightmare: As fallout from Fukushima heads our way, the government turns a blind eye

By: runcible

Even with government, University of California and this reporter’s tests showing high radiation in the air, water, food and dairy products in this state, the state and federal governments cut off special testing for Fukushima radionuclides more than half a year ago.
Southern California is still getting hit by Fukushima radiation at alarmingly high levels that will inevitably increase as the main bulk of polluted Pacific Ocean water reaches North America over the next two years.

Fukushima: Tepco set to release almost a MILLION metric tons of radioactive water into the Pacific over the next three years

Tepco says it has 220,761 metric tons of radioactive water stored. (The containment vessels are cracked and they constantly have to pump in water to run over the exposed fuel. The water is then stored in tanks which are currently 95% full.
So…what’s their solution? To ‘filter’ out the cesium and then release the still radioactive water into the pacific because they basically don’t know what else to do with it all.
After the water has passed through the crippled units, it is processed through the SARRY system to remove cesium, but other systems designed to remove other radioactive materials have been overwhelmed by the complexity and concentration of contamination found at Fukushima Daiichi.
TEPCO estimates show that the volume of contaminated water required to be stored on site will likely triple over the next three years.
So basically…they don’t really know HOW to filter out ALL the radioactive material, but F* it, lets poison the ocean
and realease close to a MILLION metric tons of contaminated water into the ocean over the next three years.
WTG Japan….If anyone likes seafood, better eat up now before they’re all dangerous to eat and glow in the dark.

Still lots of stuff floating around the Pacific from Japan. We found a Hello Kitty door mat and a really cool decorative wooden bowl that washed up the beach in Kekaha Kai State Park. We didn't get swarmed in the airport so they didn't set off any dosimeters.

I noticed that there were some people on here spouting about how safe and green nuke energy was and how it was going to save our future... prior to Fukushima blowing. Not a peep since. Interesting.

It blowed up good. Real good!

Don't worry Cliffy. GE (a subsidiary of several Govts) gas turbines and CNG/LNG to the rescue.

Nat gas is going to save the earth from global warming. Just think of all the old heating oil pipelines that can run NG with a few mods and put 10's of millions of Canadians and Americans to work as gas fitters, equipment operators, tin bashers, plumbers, welders, sales, admin, distribution, manufacturing etc.

Did you know a gas fireplace in your tipi is the way to go for you woodsie moonbeam types? $8 worth of NG = a cord of birch firewood.

$8 won't even buy you gas and 2 stoke/bar oil for a chainsaw to cut 1/2 a cord. Hell, you can't even buy an axe for $8

Where Cliffy lives there isn't any trees big enough to need an axe.

I still believe nuke energy CAN be the greenest non-renewable energy source ... but it depends on the reactor type. Not all reactors are the same

The Fukishima type of reactor is inherently unstable. When its core looses its graphite rod moderators, the result is a runaway reaction. If the core overheats, the graphite rods moderators jam, and the operators loose control. Finally the core requires a constant flow of water to cool the core. Its a bad design that should be banned.

CANDU reactors are inherently stable. They use heavy water as a moderator. If the moderator is lost the reactions stops. Heavy water doesn't jam up. The CANDU also require a constant flow of water to keep the reactor core cool, but our system pumps water to a reservoir which is gravity fed to the core. Its not fool proof, but the chances of a accident are substantially less.

Nuclear reactors are greener than fossil fuels because they don't produce greenhouse gases or carbon emissions. The nuclear by products are extremely toxic, but I believe eventually we will figure out a way to permanently dispose of this material safely. An argument could be made to ban new reactors until we have a method to dispose of nuclear waste safely.
