One of the questions that is being asked is,

"If the town was secure; if the houses were locked; if the metal gun cabinets were locked; then why did the RCMP feel that it was in the community's interest to break into the houses, pry open metal cabinets and remove private property? Did they go too far?"

Since no charges for unsafe storage were laid, then forcing open locked metal gun cabinets went beyond checking houses for injured residents. Who instructed these officers to break into the cabinets? By what authority was this seizure performed? Was the seizure lawful?

Officers must not obey unlawful commands. Doing so will land them in legal hot water for carrying out illegal orders. These issues have not been addressed yet, so it is premature to suggest that the officers in High River did anything wrong. This is one of those times when the expression 'More to follow.' is appropriate. We'll have to wait and see.

The cops were totally in the right here. Calgary is rife with unsavoury characters and gang members and it certainly isn't good to have firearms unsecured in vacant houses.

excuse me? First off, High River is NOT Calgary. The weapons were seized by the RCMP in High River. The Calgary City Police would never break into peoples homes and steal their possessions.

The RCMP have all entrances into High River blocked off and have arrested High River residences trying to get into town to check on their property.

I think if a Calgary thug wants to get to High River he could be there within an hour. I don't recall saying anything about the Calgary R.C.M.P.

What I don't understand is, where do these people get off thinking they have rights?

I'm not just exactly clear! Who are you talking about? The residents of High River? The cops?

"Thugs" aren't stupid enough to loot towns surrounded and patrolled by cops in combat gear.

There are no "Calgary RCMP", Calgary has it's own police force, and since this draconian phishing expedition by the RCMP in High River, people are once again calling for the formation of a Provincial Police Force and getting rid of herr harpers brown shirts.

"Thugs" aren't stupid enough to loot towns surrounded and patrolled by cops in combat gear.

So far, the only "looting" in High River has been done by the RCMP.

Exactly.

Exactly

Potential "excuses"... there were one or two known "collectors" with an over abundant inventory,..... they don't want the "thugs" to get their guns back so it's GOOD to have you house looted, it proves you aren't a thug or a doomsday prepper who went overboard.

We are all terrorists after all, that makes us all suspects.

Um, just wondering how the cops got the guns in the first place. Aren't we all supposed to have them in safes with trigger locks on them and bolts removed and the ammo in a different location?
This sounds to me like some sh|tforbrains bureaucrat's dense idea.
And did't the RCMP catalogue which gun came from which house and when?
I wonder if the cops absconded with all the valuables that thieves could grab with the hopes of selling the valuables to get illegal firearms.
Of course those puzzles are all rhetorical if all those people are criminals with intent or else the area is overloaded with criminals intent on thieving every firearm in the area (which makes me wonder if the cops are too busy being annoying to actually go catch criminals).

The cops know that people could have been cleaning or working on their guns when the emergency hit. That could have staved off any attempt to lock up the weapons. They are in **** here and will need to get some BS artists working overtime.

When you stand to lose half a million because of no insurance, are homeless wearing donated clothes just wanting to salvage your pictures and keepsakes (which includes weapons for men), you'd expect, you're assets protected rather the looted and rummaged through.

I'm impressed by how the drones nailed down the houses with weapons going by alloy densities.

Geofizzikal expletive stuff in action there I guarantee.

I want one.

It would have beaten hours of freezing my *** off while going deaf in a helo.

You are a terrorist. It's going to happen to you too one day.

Creeping Socialism. We can steer them our way or we can let them run free with the illusion or a herd divided. They've given us the option, we just have to guess which option is the right option.

From another board:

I'm betting dollars to doughnuts that before the long gun registry got scrapped, each RCMP detachment ran a check on all gun owners within their area and kept the list for later use. Given the "selective" nature of the homes that were searched, I'm guessing that the list got used.

and...

OTTAWA - The chief spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper is urging the RCMP to return guns seized from homes in flooded-out High River, Alta., and focus on other tasks instead.

RCMP officers, assisted by Canadian Forces personnel, have entered an unknown number of homes in the flood zone in High River that had been evacuated by their owners. A video made by the police shows them searching for pets, people or other hazardous items.
RCMP have said that if they found an unsecured firearm in the home, they seized it for safekeeping and plan to return it to the owner.

"This natural disaster was a highly unusual incident," said Andrew MacDougall, Harper's director of communications. "If any firearms were taken, we expect they will be returned to their owners as soon as possible. We believe the RCMP should focus on more important tasks such as protecting lives and private property."

A spokesman for Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said operational matters for the RCMP in High River are under local control and were not directed by the federal government.

In both Ottawa and Alberta, politicians on all sides were looking for answers.

"I think the RCMP needs to explain fully to the public the procedures that were used. But people have to understand it was in a flooding emergency situation," said MP Randall Garrison, the public safety critic for the NDP.
