EDITORIAL: PM knows banning handguns won’t work

Toronto Police officers investigate after two men were wounded by gunfire and a Hyundai Sonata was riddled with bullet holes at a lowrise apartment complex on Rochefort in Flemingdon Park on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019.Ernest Doroszuk / Toronto Sun

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s promise to give municipal governments the power to ban handguns won’t address the problem it’s intended to solve.

That is, violent urban street crime in cities where rival criminal gangs don’t care about who they kill, including innocent bystanders, as they fight over control of the lucrative trade in illegal drugs.

The Trudeau government knows that banning handguns won’t work.

As a paper released by Public Safety Canada in April titled A Dialogue on Handguns and Assault Weapons noted:
“The vast majority of owners of handguns and of other firearms in Canada lawfully abide by requirements and most guns crimes are not committed with legally-owned firearms … Any ban of handguns … would primarily affect legal firearms owners …”

The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police knows it, pointing out in August that since the vast majority of handguns used in gun violence are already illegal — with more than 80% smuggled in from the United States — it makes no sense to make something that is already illegal, illegal twice.

Mayor John Tory of Toronto, who now supports “banning” handguns in his city knows it, or at least he did when he said in 2014 while he was running for office that banning handguns was an “empty gesture” because “handguns are already strictly regulated by the federal government … criminals and gang members don’t obey the law.”

So what would be effective in addressing the problem which a handgun ban won’t solve?

First, enforcing the laws we already have on the use of illegal handguns in the commission of a crime, including the sentencing provisions those laws already contain.

Second, denying bail to criminals previously convicted of illegally using guns when they are up on new charges, and providing the needed resources to police to keep track of those who are released on bail.

Third, getting serious about stopping the flow of illegal guns from the US into Canada.

Fourth, earmarking public funding for anti-gang initiatives in cities where the problem exists, including enhanced law enforcement and programs to address the root causes of gang-related crime, such as drug addiction and poverty.

In other words, do what will work, instead of wasting time and tax money on imposing municipal handgun bans that won’t.

Most cities do these days. This puppy was parked in front when RPS went on a gun raid on my street a couple weeks back.

Admittedly the machine looks RIDICULOUS in a city setting AT FIRST GLANCE...............................

UNTIL you give it some thought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AND HEY - I THOUGHT - WE CAN BLAME LIE-berals for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LIE-berals DO SPECIFY that ALL GUNS are to be locked up in a secure container!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And that armoured can - loaded with riot guns and M 16`s and tear gas canisters and guns firing rubber bullets....

parked in a FENCED police lot surrounded with barbed wire looks pretty SECURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having all the equipment already loaded and ready to go would speed up cop response times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

HAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

STUPID LIE-berals - always in the wrong...............

some way or other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Washington man with severe Trump Derangement Syndrome has been arrested for fatally shooting his wife and dog to apparently make a point to President Trump about gun control.

Yes, really.

He called your pal epstien ten years ago

He also called 911 before it happened ( you know, with the dancing ziotards), so I figure he is a lot smarter and has far more integrity and accuracy than you do.

Also, obviously cites were provided such as the shooter guy's tweets, so in asking a STUPID question like that, you have obviously chosen to be just a fakenews mentally retarded braindead full of crap effe tard.

now GYFS epstooge

OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dumbbones DOES NOT LIKE IT when the "out there" .......

Infowars gang gets questioned in any way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a lot of Fake News coming from BOTH SIDES OF THE FENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Consider the "Dearbornistan" photo attached below!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Intelligent Muslims - meaning those cunning enough to think it wise TO HIDE their more extreme opinions..........................

so that people like TRUMP would not get supported or elected........................................

worked VERY HARD to try to convince people that the notorious Dearbornistan photo WAS FAKE NEWS..............................

and did not truly represent the beliefs of average Muslims!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And yet news media people who interviewed Muslims as they exited mosques after prayers.........................

were told by Muslims that Sharia Law - and by extension - Muslim political views...............................

SUPERSEDED ANY LAW made by Congress or Parliament!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In other news - British pollsters have discovered that a GREAT MAJORITY of Muslims in that country..........................

WOULD NOT SPEAK TO COPS - if they happened to hear of a planned terror attack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Therefore I am much more inclined to believe the Dearbornistan photo...........................................

than I am to believe that some nut would shoot his family to make a point to Trump!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People are wacked. Logically, more people walking around carrying guns → more people shot. Let the cops go after the criminals and legal owners leave their armaments at home.

We keep an unloaded shotgun by the door and a couple rounds near it. We live in a rural area with bears, cougars, etc. always looking for handouts. Keeping our firearms in a safe with the ammo somewhere else would mean my source of livelihood would go extinct very quickly. My cousin keeps a rifle by his door in case coyotes want a free veal dinner. Criminalizing people like us is just effing stupid. IMO, people that want to do just that deserve being victimized by the real criminals.

Actually, the "logically" part doesn't fit.

Almost every state in the USA has created "shall issue" concealed carry permits or "constitutional carry" (no license required) since 1990.

In that time the US murder rate has dropped almost 50%.

That said, I do agree to some extent. I think carrying handguns should be a level on your RPAL, one that requires extensive preliminary training in law and combat use of firearms, an improved and increased background check, an interview, and yearly qualifications (just like police)........all paid for by the applicant. On that level I think civilian carry would be a benefit to society.

I can see that for wondering around a city. Seems a tad excessive for a trapper or prospector that may not see another human for days on end.

That statement by Ember seems to be mathematically CORRECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The late writer James Michener did a pile of research before writing his books..................

especially Texas and Centennial.............................................

and in the preface to Centennial - Michener claimed that for every pioneer killed by natives....................................

there were FOUR PIONEERS ACCIDENTALLY SHOT by their neighbours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And an elderly relative who served with 4th Cdn armoured division in Normandy......................................

once claimed that the number of Cdns accidentally shot by careless handling of rifles owned by their friends and allies.................................

was virtually as high as the number actually shot by German riflemen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The solution to our crime problems is CRIMINAL CONTROL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we want to deal effectively with crime we must FIRST FIRE our idiot Boy Justin and his loser LIE-berals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since it is LIE-beral who are ENABLING all the crime by failing to take any honest action!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those too lazy or disinterested to check out the link, here's an explanation; Yesterday, The Alberta Press posted an on-line question.

Are you in favour of citizens being able to carry handguns to protect themselves like they are allowed to do in Texas?

The response? (as of 4:45 PM Atlantic Dec. 31)

Undecided: 49 (0.46%)

No: 384 (3.61%)

YES: 10,214 (95.93%)
