Executing Gays is A-OK: United Nations

Let's recap the facts here.

Both Canada, and the United States of America, opposed the measure to remove homosexuality as a prohibited reason for execution.

They are both to be applauded for their stance on this issue.

Yes, the United States has a ways to go yet, but they are making strides toward LGBT equality--the inches closer to repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" are just another indication of this. Canada is not immune from discrimination on the basis of being gay--it was only a few years ago that we legislated the legalisation of same-sex marriage, the Canada Revenue Agency still gives charitable status to organisations that seek to "cure" homosexuality through religion, there's a number of elected legislators opposing Bill C-389 (a bill to make people equal, regardless of gender identity), and the Ottawa School Board seeks a policy to force the disclosure of homosexuality in students.

Get off your damn high horse.

"The guy who came up with that completely biggotted statement."

Would that be Cliffy for declaring those who supported Bush Neanderthals or you who agree with his oh so tolerant and loving objective impartiality?

lone wolf, looks are deceiving. And even if they were not, actions put your hero in the Neanderthal column far more convincingly than you and your ilk could ever hope to put GW Bush into.

Or do you mean to say that criticizing a (half) black man is bigotted (sic), criticizing a man who served his country with honour honest and right?

You can interpret, rephrase and spin it into whatever you think makes your flubs right by you. You know SFA about me - but you give plenty of evidence what you're all about.

Do you mean that I am honest and open about who I am, how I feel and what I think while you most definitely are not and do not do the same?

"Bush did appeal to backwards Neanderthals."

Cliffy, I thought it was just Petros that was dropped on his head at birth (as so illustrated in his avatar)

For crying out loud, don't encourage him.

I am literally Gobsmacked......the inferiority complex (and I called it that LONG before Wikileaks) among Canadians is astounding. No subject can be spoken of without the Canadians taking some moment to sniff in moral superiority at the USA, whether they have reason, or not. Usually not.

It is a VERY bad joke.

Get real guys.

76 nations voted in support of a motion to remove being gay as a reason to protest capital punishment.

41 out of 47 nations on earth with a majority Muslim population voted in support of the motion. (Gee, guys, maybe it ISN'T only radical Islam that is the problem!)

17 nations abstained.

But somehow, out of the twisted recesses of their so-called minds, the Terrible Triumvirate (Cliffy, Mentalfloss, and Petros) find this in this a reason to start bashing the United States. Not Iran.....who hangs homosexuals, not China, or North Korea, the worst Human Rights abusers on earth who voted for the motion, nor Islam in general, which was the mover and majority supporter of the motion....oh no....not a word!

Time to kick the good old USA.

Which, last time I looked, was a free, democratic nation.

That voted against the motion.

It is just weird.

Seek help Guys.

I'm serious.

Come on, Colpy; you can't deny Canadians the right to engage in their fourth favourite pastime. Kicking the USA is a Canadian tradition so ingrained as to be almost a reflex action.

Ironically, you would never hear Colpy bad mouth Jack for constantly bashing Obama no matter what the subject being discussed. Since Obama represents the left in the US, he is fair game but Bush is off limits and anybody who does is an insecure Canadian.

Enough off topic nonsense. It all started because that communist nazi Obama signed the resolution in favour of decriminalizing gays in international law which had formerly been passed on by Bush. Now that pinko nazi is going to make it OK for gays to be in the military. The world is coming to an end as we speak.

First of all, I can not remember ever bad-mouthing Obama...........unless saying "They elected the wrong guy" counts......I have no hate on for Obama. I just think he is an empty suit, in way over his head. Much like GW.

George W Bush's tolerance and excuses for the use of torture, and the Patriot Act, and his tax cuts have all come in for criticism from me.

Once again though, the USA is one of the good guys in this debate......I wonder at the psychological balance of those that can't deal with a single subject without turning it into a hatefest for the entire USA.

It is simply weird.

Obama has served his country with dignity and honor. Something that neither Bush knows the meaning of.

Well, I'm not completely convinced of that.........either statement.

I think in both cases the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Now, could we PLEASE get back to the subject of execution of homosexuals, which has NOTHING to do with the USA, good or bad???

PLEASE????

When you, me and the rest of the planet can vote for who sits in the UN and those who make life changing decision for us then I'll believe in a fair and just world body.

Reading through this post one would think it's about un frailties or gwbs legacy and not so much about the outrage paradox is seeking to foist upon commonwealth nations specially Canada in his intial post. The international democratic process has failed in his opinion so looks to the commonwealth to rectify the process. Canada did not support so I was wondering why the prompting of outrage toward Ottawa, however now his tune has changed and Canada along with the U.S. are to be applauded. Don't ask don't tell, cra charitable status, C-389 and the Ottawa school board have become the focus of outrage, the un rage spent I guess.
This vote was certainly not music to gay ears but it's like Torrington said, 'Everybody loves democracy until the votes swings the other way', just have to suck it up and acknowledge different strokes for different folks.
Even if un seats were voted in ideological differences would persist, the globe does not yet march to the wests drum.

It amazes me how a thread about the UN and the execution of gays can be hijacked by the visceral stupidity of America Haters.

I'm amazed at the number of Canadians who support those imperialist war mongers, but hey! That is what makes Canada great.

As for executing gays being OK with the UN, we gotta long way to go, baby. I guess the world is not as civilized as we thought.
