I don't see how "Big Country" can not make the top 10, so many good actors and actresses- Gregory Peck, Lee Majors, Charles Bickford, Burl Ives, Jean Simmons, Carol Baker, Chuck Connors.

I've seen that movie at least 3 times, all great actors. A real good movie,
well I wonder who picks those top movies, we could take our own poll and
pick our own, those picks are just someone's little poll, somewhere I would
assume. There are lots of good movies left out.

Doesn't anyone remember 'Giant' with rock hudson, elizabeth taylor, james dean.
A huge and long western made in Texas.

Yep, "Giant" was good, based on the book by Edna Ferber, "Ice Palace" was also based on another book of hers, I really liked "Ice Palace".

I always love the oldies best!

William S Hart (famous cowboy from NYC) in his own production of ''Tumbleweeds''"

Here's something really special just for you Western film fans - Mr Hart says 'farewell':

YouTube - WILLIAM S. HART FAREWELL TO THE SCREEN

This is generally acknolwedged as one of Hollywood's most dramatic presentations. I remember now how me and my pals used to have lunch at a tavern in downtown NYC which had a portrait of Mr Hart on the walls. While he has since been forgotten, it is kinda ironic that a NYC boy should be a cowboy star. He is buried in Brooklyn, NY's Greenwood cemetary not too far from where I lived.

There have been many great Western comedies. The greatest of them all is Charlie Chaplin's ''The Gold Rush'' {1925}:

The Gold Rush (1925)

The 'little tramp' made many great movies in his time. He said this gem is the one he most wanted to be remembered by.

If I have to choose one, it will be Open Range.

By the way, I just bought Comanche Moon (2008 ) and the remastered Lonesome Dove (Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones, 1989) from Genius Entertainment.

I will look for that dvd, I have the book, but never did see the tv movie.
I suppose it will be on amazon.
I have all the lonesome dove movies, and also the tv series, I am actually
watching them again after about a year.
Who is in Comanche Moon?
I have Lonesome Dove, Return to Lonesome Dove, Deadman's Walk, and
Streets of Loredo.

The good the bad and the ugly was a great show, but I got real tired of the music. The same with his other spaghetti westerns, the music and the staring
for me, took away from the movies and made them a little corny.
Sergio Leone the director/producer, did all of them the same.
 I guess the music was a little bad but the one thing about it is - even today if I hear that music, I know in a heartbeat what movie it's from.

I used to watch nearly any show with Robert Duvall. Lonesome Dove was a good show. Then when he said that he hated Canada and he hated Canadians, it ruined it all for me. I have never watched a show with him in it since then.

I can't imagine him saying such a thing, how do you know it was true, and not
just some gossip from somewhere.
Parts of lonesome dove was filmed in alberta, then when he did 'broken trail',
not too long ago, much of it was also filmed in alberta, so if he did think that
at one time, I think he must have changed his mind.
And, what reason would he ever have to say that in the first place.

I felt the same about John Wayne years ago when he said that canada should
keep their noses out of their business, when we were concerned about oil
spills from tankers coming past our province.
I lost my respect for him.

Yup he said it alright and I lost all respect for him too when I heard him say that. He's friends with my scumbag brother inlaw. If I happened to enter a room with both of them in it unseen, I tell you I would represent and Duval would be begging to kiss Canadian boot before I was finished.

If the buttwipe doesn't like Canadians so, he shouldn't be entering this country at all.

Funny folks say The Sundowners because it takes place in Australia so to me that's not really a western! Great movie, though. What's that comedy western with James Garner? Support Your Local Sheriff? Funny.
Anybody ever hear of one called A Big Hand For The Little Lady?

That is the John Wayne attitude that made John Wayne, John Wayne. It is just the $h!ts when it turns on you.

It is not a movie but my vote goes to "DEADWOOD". I bought the set so it is like a long movie when you watch them end to end.

Dragged all of my 'westerns' out of storage a couple of weeks ago, and we have
been watching them on nights when there is no canuck game, and doing jigsaws,
and fun stuff like that, popcorn, wine, cat and dog, home sweet home.
I have many many westerns, as well as others, so name it, I probably have got it.
I started watching deadwood on tv a while back, couldn't get into it, cause all the
f bombs just didn't fit into a western, so I got bored with it, and dropped it, but
I did watch 'the quick and the dead' the other night, and the same guy who starred
in deadwood was part of the cast.
Just watched the first disc of 'The Sacketts', the old Louie Lamour mini series, taken from his book.
Tom Sellick, Sam Elliott and Jeff Osterhage, it's a simple old west movie, with
very good actors, very enjoyable.

This was the last big picture western I have seen. I did not go to the theatre though - pay per view in a hotel when it was new. I liked it.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

Also 3:10 to Yuma - both original and remake. Liked the older better.

Me too, Glen Ford was an excellent actor, and Van Hefflen too, I have both
movies. I have the Jesse James movie, it is excellent, although one has to
adjust to the mood, it is very quiet and serious, not the usual.

Good God, I completely forgot "Brokeback Mountain" although some consider it a romantic-drama and not a western.
