No more 'teary eyes' from Trudeau: Iranian-Canadians demand action on crash

Iran protesters take to the streets over shooting down of Ukrainian airliner

Protesters called for the supreme leader of Iran to resign as demonstrations broke out in Tehran after the regime was forced into the embarrassing admission that it accidentally shot down a civilian airliner.
After three days of officially denying any involvement in the crash, Iran abruptly reversed course earlier in the day and said “human error” had led its forces to shoot down Flight PS752 after mistaking it for a US cruise missile.
The announcement was met with fury on the streets of Tehran, where crowds of students gathered to denounce the Revolutionary Guard. “Shame on you,” the protesters shouted. “End your rule over the country.”
The surging anger over the crash and the days of false denials comes at a sensitive moment in Iran and just weeks after the regime’s forces killed hundreds of civilians while crushing nationwide protests.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei quickly insisted he was not responsible for misleading the public about the real cause of the Ukraine crash and moved to place the blame on the military.
“As soon as the supreme leader was informed of the catastrophic mistake” he ordered the truth to be "made known to the people explicitly and honestly,” the semi-official Fars news agency reported...……….More

Re: Ukraine Flight 752

You bring up a good point.

Kill the General, save thousands of lives.

But killing him also risks thousands of lives and more than since the threat of war was a possibility.

So which is better? Instant safety or safety over years?

(That's if what the US claims was true, which it turns out, it wasn't, there was no imminent threat and thus the act to take him out was illegal)
There is no logic to any of this. It has been a series of tit for tat.......on a highly reactionary way. Thereis no truth to Trump's rationale for the killing...... "imminent" threat is a nice catch phrase that has emerged as an excuse since 911..............and until He provided actual and factual evidence of any threat ......his words are meaningless.
The problem is that we are dealing with another deceitful nation........... and this plane destruction could be pivotal........As how Iran handles this can make a big difference as to future relations.

Sadly the chain of events triggered by Trump.......has created this disaster.

We cannot be over reactive .......as that would be counterproductive and shut Iran down completely. The last ten or so years have shown that the US tactics don't work.......and only antagonizes the situation....

This is not a liberal or conservative......or any party situation..........it is a humanitarian , sensitive political situation......

situation unfolding........

"...the same way we lied when we shot down the Iranian passenger plane in 1988. The same way President Bush Sr. said he will never apologize to Iran. The same way we promoted the commander who ordered the plane to be shot down. I guess when we do it it's alright, because our shit don't stink. That's how..."

some random comment that bears repeating...^

So what happened to the plane's id beacon? No one had a cell phone with an app? This is more cyber ware fare and the haters will eat up the official story ( like the war in Afghanistan which it just came out was giant lie right from the beginning for example)cause it's one of those seven countries the us has set for invasion since 911.

Relatives of some of the victims - led by Dr Jim Swire, whose daughter Flora died on Pan-Am Flight 103 - have already attempted to appeal against the conviction of Megrahi.

The families had argued they should have the right to carry forward the miscarriage of justice appeal for Megrahi. However, three judges at the appeal court in Edinburgh ruled in July 2015 that this would not be possible under Scots law.

I'd like to see all the bleeding heart progressives on this forum that are so gung ho against the US explain this news article away:

Iranians have gathered in the streets of Tehran to demand the resignation of Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei after the regime admitted it had mistakenly shot down a passenger plane.

Angry crowds gathered on Saturday night chanting 'death to liars' and calling for the country's supreme leader to step down over the tragic military blunder, video from the scene shows.

What began as mournful vigils for Iranian lives lost on the flight quickly turned to outrage and protest against the regime, and riot police quickly responded with tear gas in an attempt to break up the protests.

Ukrainian Airlines Flight 752 was carrying 176 people, at least 130 of them Iranian citizens, when it was shot down by hapless Iranian Revolutionary Guard air defense forces shortly after taking off from Tehran on January 8.

Iran for days claimed that a technical failure caused the crash, before admitting on Saturday that its own surface-to-air missiles brought the plane down.

Iran was on high alert at the time, hours after launching ballistic missiles at U.S. forces in Iraq in a strike that caused no casualties. The missile strike was in retaliation for a U.S. operation that killed powerful Iranian General Qassem Soleimani

On Saturday afternoon, candlelight vigils at universities in Tehran for the victims of Flight 752 began to turn to protests against the regime.

At Amirkabir University, protesters chanted 'Down with the dictator' and 'shame on IRGC [Revolutionary Guard], let the country go.'

At Sharif University, crowds of outraged Iranians chanted 'commander in chief, resign!' The Ayatollah is Iran's commander in chief.

The crowd also condemned the Islamic Republic's paramilitary internal security force, chanting 'Death to Basij.'

As night fell, riot police attempted to break up the protests with tear gas.

Cops armed with shields and batons tried to disperse the crowds, and police fired water canons into the crowds of protesters.

IMO, I'm actually surprised a little bit to hear/see/read this. Not to say it's not a positive thing; in a horrible way, it is.

This could be something that weakens the regime, even as the killing of the General, for a moment in time, strengthened it (due to Trump threatening attacks to cultural landmarks).

I still worry though that the terrorists in the area - ISIS and others - will take advantage of the situation.

I hope pressures from Iranians OUTSIDE of Iran keep possible winds of change going on back home.

I wonder though if this shooting down of the aircraft hadn't happened, would people be commenting on Iranian restraint, considering they could have done a hell of a lot worse when they retaliated against the US. Not to say I'd buy that, but it was something I had heard in passing a few days ago.

Meanwhile in war mongering Ottawa..

The response from Ottawa has been more muted, with Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne saying Soleimani's “aggressive actions have had a destabilizing effect in the region and beyond.”

But a former senior Canadian intelligence official was more explicit.

“Qassem Soleimani was a brutal yet talented terrorist leader,” Andrew Ellis told Global News in an interview. “That’s the best way I can describe him.”

Iran and Qassem Soleimani defeated ISIS, while US allies helped it

Israel, the US, the sauds, the turks and cutter have all been supporting isis.

This is a very delicate diplomatic situation.........with many moving parts. Many Cdns were killed in this crash........but how it is handled is critical now. There is no value at all in going off half cocked. Let the process unfold.......and hopefully we get the cooperation we want from Iran. Not sure it was all that smart to close the embassy in Iran........as it does not leave CDA in a great potion. The only thing that might make Iran more cooperative is the fact that they (accidentally) shot down that plane.......leaving themselves in a much worse position.

This will require patience, tact, diplomacy.......and not some crazy knee jerk reaction.... So anyone with instant gratification issues........ had better cool their heels.

Trump must take full responsibility for the jetliners downing too. He fired the first shot.
He should take at teasel SOME responsibility..........but won't...... Now ifa any americans had been on board........we might be in a hot war now. That would give him the excuse to attack them militarily. Or there would be more assassinations........

He has hardly addressed the incident...... so that tells you something too.

Why address something that doesn't really concern the US right now?

Re: Ukraine Flight 752

This just goes to show Trudeau has no balls. Like him or hate him, Harper would have been far more vocal in his criticism of the Iranians
Is your hatred of Trudeau blinding you to the fact that this i s a very sensitive diplomatic situation?? It was Harper that closed the CDN embassy in Iran......leaving the CDN Gov't in a weaker state for negotiations. This is a lot more complex with many moving parts. aggression has not worked with Iran......... so maybe a softer diplomacy is worth a try.

The US high testosterone method is not working and only creating more crisis. Unless you want a perpetual cycle of violence..........where no one wins.
