Nobody knows what the number of dead is, for instance, nobody knows what the population of the Americas was before European contact--I've seen estimates of 8 million to 100 million--and most of the mortality was due to disease, not a planned, industrialized process of rounding people up, transporting them to extermination camps, robbing them, gassing them, and cremating them.

The book 1491 estimates 90 - 110 million based on recent archaeological findings. Yes many if not most of the 90% were killed by disease, but many were killed by armies and settlers. The Spanish were and Portuguese were particularly brutal and the Dutch introduced scalping. Then there were the consentration camps masquerading as reservations where many starved. And the residential schools where, in Canada alone, 50 thousand children disappeared.

I'm not denying the holocaust of WWII happened but it almost seems to me that it as become a smokescreen to obscure what happened in the Americas.

Geoffrey Megargee and Martin Dean, the lead editors of the project, have compiled the thousands of sites in a multivolume encyclopedia that is being published by the Holocaust Museum. Each volume catalogs thousands of sites, providing a comprehensive history of the "living and working conditions, activities of the Jewish councils, Jewish responses to persecution, demographic changes, and details of the liquidation of the ghettos."

The Holocaust Museum team also created maps of the sites, which were scattered across Europe, and which imprisoned or killed between 15 and 20 million people.

Their study includes everybody.

The researchers' work may also help Holocaust survivors attempting to sue
insurance companies or recover stolen property.

"How many claims have been rejected because the victims were in a camp that
we didn't even know about?" said Sam Dubbin, a lawyer who represents
survivors.

What's your opinion on Eli Weisel? I've read his books, and have mixed feelings-- on one hand, it's important that we know what happened so that this never happens again. On the other hand, some people feel he is monetizing the suffering he went through. Two perspectives I've been exposed to, and I'd appreciate a potential third.

I am very interested in WWII and the holocaust. I have heard this question asked before but the answers always seem lacking. That is this: Once the people realized what was happening in the ghettos - why was there not a mass escape and revolt ? It seems in the movies like "The Pianist" they just took all the aggression on the chin - as opposed to charging the proverbial and actual machine-gun nests. I know there were Jewish revolts here and there - but if they knew they were going to die - why not risk it all in revolt or escape ?
Perhaps there was always hope that it would end soon ? I can see if one had family to protect as well. I would not risk anything with them involved. Perhaps you can shed some light on the psychological impact of being in such an incomprehensibly horrific situation faces with such barbaric evil manifestations of the human condition.

Is there a personality trait that makes some people survive where others perish? Is it faith, luck, family, resiliency, stubbornness, or something extra? Could you look at a person and know if they had the survivor trait or not? Do you wonder why you survived where others didn't? Do you feel pressure to be something more than you are to make up for all those who didn't make it? Have you ever asked God why he allowed this awful thing to happen and what it is that you're supposed to learn from this? If you knew that someone was contemplating suicide, what would you say to them?
