Prisoner trade by Obama: Malevolent or just Stupid?

No... but I can see how a retard would think that.

Only a retard would think that people are redefining the "Leave No Man Behind" motto?

.......

How does one define "man" when his actions demonstrate that he has abandoned his post voluntarily? Seems when that happens he is no longer your "man."

I have really never heard anyone add any caveats to this saying or muse about what defines a man or not. I have always seen it used in the most simple and straightforward way.

And it is a mistake Israeli continues to make.

They have given up a lot to get their guys back, but what else do you think they should have done? Their conflict is likely to go on essentially forever, like the conflict that the US is involved with in the middle east. If you have to wait until the "end" of the war to get your people back, they will die as POWs.

^^Only a retard would post that as well.

I'm seeing a pattern here.

Duh, I already pointed it out many posts ago.

"This seems to be a pretty common tactic around here. Make a baseless claim, post something that in no way substantiates that claim, and then get mad that people wont accept it and just resort to insults."

Sometimes it is hard to believe that the people here are actually older than the average message board.

Btw, Bergdahl's father tweeted to the Taliban informing them of his work to obtain the release of jihadis held at Gitmo. What do you think of that?

That was posted earlier, right?

Deleted tweet by Robert Berdahl.......

It is hard to really tell what is behind tweets like that.

Obviously he probably has some empathy for family members of people being held indefinitely as part of this war.

The dad also seems to be willing to do a lot of weird things that he thought might help him get his son back safely. Sucking up to the people who are holding his son might have been part of that.

In the end though, his dad could be a Nazi-Pedophile-Terrorist for all I care, it doesn't have any weight on if his son should have been rescued or not.

When a soldier voluntarily disarms himself, abandons his post in a combat theater during wartime, ends up playing badminton with the enemy, and is not listed as a POW by the US Army that person has stopped being a US soldier. When that happens he is no longer your "man" and all obligations to him are discharged.

We know Bergdahl wasn't captured by the Taliban. We know he voluntarily left his post. We know he abandoned his weapons and could no longer defend himself. This is a case of being AWOL at the least. It may be a case of desertion. Or it may be a case of defection.

The post you quoted is part of a conversation in regards to this initial post.

We are not discussing if he is a deserter or not. We are discussing if Obama gave the Taliban exactly what they wanted.

All he referenced in support of that was a question from a reporter that he can't even name. Now his panties are in a bunch over the fact that a question from a reporter is not proof of anything. He would apparently rather sulk about that rather than try to discuss the initial point.

All this crap about if he is a deserter or not is premature. We don't know all the facts, and there is no reason to pass judgement in any sort of rush.

When it comes down to it, I think there is no questions that the US has to do whatever it takes to bring their soldiers home. If there are other issues, they can be dealt with in due time.

Given this is an internet board, not a court of law, burden of proof is somewhat less. Given the choice between Eagle and his proof by "unnamed reporter" at a WhiteHouse press conference and yourself who have offered no proof, I will take Eagle any day. Unless of course you have knowledge or proof as to what was initially demanded from a more reliable source. If you do, please offer it up.

There is a pretty wide gulf between the burden of proof in a court of law, and a question. They are kind of completely different things.

If we have any info on exactly what the back and forth was like in the negotiations, that would be really interesting, but we don't have that right now. Name calling and gifs doesn't really change that.

I refuse to be distracted..... :)

From those radical right wing Tea Party types at the New York Times:......................

Sometime after midnight on June 30, 2009, Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl left behind a note in his tent saying he had become disillusioned with the Army, did not support the American mission in Afghanistan and was leaving to start a new life.

He slipped off the remote military outpost in Paktika Province on the border with Pakistan and took with him a soft backpack, water, knives, a notebook and writing materials, but left behind his body armor and weapons — startling, given the hostile environment around his outpost.

....................................

Mr. Full, then a specialist in the platoon, said he and other platoon members grew increasingly bitter at the time they were spending looking for Sergeant Bergdahl. “He had sent all his belongings home — his computer, personal items,” said Mr. Full, now 25. He said Sergeant Bergdahl used to gaze at the mountains around them and say he wondered if he could get to China from there. Other platoon members said that Sergeant Bergdahl wrote Jason Bourne-type novels in which he inserted himself as the lead character.

The anger toward Sergeant Bergdahl increased exponentially after Sept. 4, when they learned that two members of Third Platoon, which routinely went on tandem missions with Second Platoon and who they believed were also searching for Sergeant Bergdahl, had been killed in an ambush. Pfc. Matthew Martinek and Lt. Darryn Andrews, both of them friends of Mr. Cornelison, died in the ambush. A Defense Department official said it was unclear whether the two men were killed directly because of the search for Sergeant Bergdahl.

..................................................

The furious search for Sergeant Bergdahl, his critics say, led to the deaths of at least two soldiers and possibly six others in the area. Pentagon officials say those charges are unsubstantiated and are not supported by a review of a database of casualties in the Afghan war.

“Yes, I’m angry,” Joshua Cornelison, a former medic in Sergeant Bergdahl’s platoon, said in an interview on Monday arranged by Republican strategists. “Everything that we did in those days was to advance the search for Bergdahl. If we were doing some mission and there was a reliable report that Bergdahl was somewhere, our orders were that we were to quit that mission and follow that report.”

Pulled directly from the White House transcripts of that press conference in the link provided.

The Taliban got exactly what they wanted. They've been trying to get them for years. On NPR they just had a piece about it.

The story you haven’t yet heard about Bowe Bergdahl’s desertion

Five years ago, I publicly raised questions about Bowe Bergdahl’s desertion from Blackfoot Company, 1-501 Infantry (Airborne), 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division.

A few weeks after his so-called “capture” in late June 2009, three conflicting accounts had surfaced: U.S. officials told the Associated Press Bergdahl had “walked off” the base with three Afghans; the Taliban claimed on its website that “a drunken American soldier had come out of his garrison” and into their arms; and Bergdahl claimed in his Taliban “hostage video” that he had “lagged behind a patrol” before being captured.

I asked on my blog: Were the AP’s sources mistaken? Or is the disturbing first account the right one? What about the “three Afghans” who Pfc. Bergdahl reportedly “just walked off” with after his shift? Who are they? What’s going on?

Five years ago, one of the brave soldiers who risked his life to search for Bergdahl answered my questions and I published his statement on July 20, 2009:

“I know the story and the accounts that he was drunk or that he was lagging behind on patrol are not true– this soldier planned this move for a long time. He walked off the post with a day’s supply of water and had written down before that he wanted to live in the mountains…he is an embarrassment to everyone who has worn the uniform.”
