Re: 'Stoner' by JOHN WILLIAMS

Just finished reading: 'Stoner' by JOHN WILLIAMS

How was "Stoner"?

I'm currently reading "Motherless Brooklyn" by Johnathon Lethem. The premise alone is what sold me - detective with tourette's symdrome.

but you need to read Infidel first, by the same author.

A wise, intelligent, determined woman.....although an atheist, I can forgive her that.

As you can probably tell from my current read, Butcher's Crossing, I liked Stoner, hence the five stars. The book was recommended by a few friends and I'm really glad I listened to them. It's a beautifully written novel about the life of Williams' title character, William Stoner -- a must read.

I read Motherless Brooklyn (Lethem) about ten years ago, a great novel - I think I'll have to dig it out and read it again. My favourite book by Lethem is, Gun, with Occasional Music, it's a hardboiled/sci-fi detective novel, set in a future that includes 'evolved' talking animals. It also has one of the best covers.

Life on the Mississippi.....Mark Twain, on his days as a river pilot, and other things.....

Amazing really.....river boat pilots had to know over 1,000 miles of river like the back of their hand, be able to navigate the ever-changing channels night or day, without the benefit of buoys' markers or any other navigational device aside from their own memory, and an intimate knowledge of the workings of the river.

Like all Mark Twain, well worth the read.

Ghost Rider Neil Peart. Man this guy is so talented if he stuck a used drum stick in the ground it would probably grow a jazz quartet.

I'm reading W.B. Yeats - Writings on Irish Folklore, Legend and Myth, because it's near St. Patrick's Day and i have to read something Irish. I'll have to pick up a bottle of Irish Whisky as well. Bushmills might have to do (if i don't splurge on Redbreast), since the lovely Connemara Peated Single Malt is unavailable in this country.

'The Lampshade' by Mark Jacobson - A holocaust detective story from Buchenwald to New Orleans. In the wake of Katrina, a lampshade is found among the ruins and eventually finds its way into the hands of Mark Jacobson who has it tested for DNA. After so long, the only DNA left is mitochondrial but enough is found to establish that the shade is made from human skin. The story follows the author as he traces the history of such objects while also trying to decide what to do with the lampshade.
