What REALLY is the best exercise you can do?

Now when it comes to exercise for training purposes and getting into shape, what really is the best exercise?

what works the cardiovascular system the hardest, with quickest results and also leads to high calorie burn?

is it running? biking? perhaps another?

I'm no expert on the matter but I would guess swimming and walking up hill would be amongst the best. I would question running and jogging as I think it pounds out the joints. Climbing stairs would also rank right up there.

In my opinion, walking is the best exercise one can do, running comes second. The reason for that is found in evolution.

In prehistoric times, when Homo Sapiens was developing from the missing link, he lived strictly a nomadic life. He walked when he could, ran when he had to (to pursue a prey, or to run away from danger). So human body was evolved to walk and (to a lesser extent) to run. So in my opinion, walking is undoubtedly the best exercise, it beats anything else by a mile.

Besides, walking has one big advantage over running and other exercises. If you overdo walking, there are no adverse effects, your feet may hurt a bit the next day, and that is it. In any other kind of exercise, if you overdo it, there could be serious adverse effects. Also the possibility of injuries is minimal in walking. It is very real in may other exercises (twisted ankle, pulled muscle, tendonitis etc.).

So without doubt, walking is the best, running second.

Well, there you have it from the resident expert- swimming and cycling are out of the question. My opinion is a little different in that I like to give people credit for a brain and I think MOST people work up to exercising gradually.

walking is definitely the best overall excercise, BUT that is not what the OP asked.

To burn calories the fastest and get results more quickly you must get that cardio going.

The only thing I would add to JLM's list is skipping (rope).

I don't like all the excercises that stress the joints. Cycling is also good, but one must

'work' at it, not just ride the bike.

Swimming is the best all round exercise. It is one of the few that works all your muscles. Sex is the most fun one.

That was my thinking when I suggested swimming but as you can see we've been told otherwise.:lol::lol::lol::lol:

I'm not sure that an expert who claimed (in a discussion of oral/anal sex) that eating feces could not harm a person should be considered an expert.

Golf and/or ping pong. I've dropped about 20 lbs in the past few months doing both.

Next up: Ball hockey.

I'm 52 years old and I was never this active. Life is good.

Actually TenPenny, I have a news flash for you, eating (their own) sh*t is a common practice among very small children and besides giving the kid bad breath, does no real harm to the child.

I got to thinking about it some more and have come to the conclusion that cutting firewood is the best exercise, if you include bucking, packing, splitting, loading and stacking. That is good for both the cardio vascular and for building strength. Wish I had $10 for every cord I've done. Two more would be ice skating and cross country skiing. Walking on level ground does very little for the cardio vascular and nothing as far as building strength is concerned:smile:.

Walking uphill might be the best exercise. Right up there is mixing concrete by hand and pushing it around in a wheel barrel and placing it and finishing it.

Whatever works for you, mt. Walking is the best exercise, but it is not for everybody. When it comes to exercise you really should do what you like, rather than what is best. If you do something because 'it is good for you', you won't stay with it for long. Eventually you will get bored and move away from it. So if you like sports, go for it.

I myself love to walk, to hike. I could walk 30, 35 kilometers (6, 7 hours) and not get bored. The fact that walking is the best possible exercise is an added bonus.

Another really good exercise that I've tried a couple of times - you need a really high building for this - Empire State building would work well. Starting at the bottom you climb 2 flights and come down one, climb two more flights come down one and so on until you reach the top of the building. Then you just reverse the process on the way down, walk down two flights, back up one and so on until you reach the bottom.

I think for the criteria you mention if you are in good shape and been checked by the doctor, I'd find a steep mountain road and load up a pack sack with about 50 lb. and start walking and maybe carry five lbs. in each hand.

I have found that this has worked for me - Balance of mind, upper body and emotional satisfaction - A number of positive chemical reactions similar to and including Endorphins are created -
BBQ and really good German Beer. A balanced life is important to us all.

I love to walk too, do it all the time, BUT if one wants to get down and burn calories and build muscle
and get in shape 'over a shorter of time', one needs to work the heart.

Pick out a 'cardio' type of excercise 'that you like to do', and make a plan and stick to it, start slow,
and pick it up a little each time, and don't do so much that you are exhausted, work your way up.

On the off days, walk to tone and stretch the muscles.
