What REALLY is the best exercise you can do?

Whatever works for you, mt. Walking is the best exercise, but it is not for everybody. When it comes to exercise you really should do what you like, rather than what is best. If you do something because 'it is good for you', you won't stay with it for long. Eventually you will get bored and move away from it. So if you like sports, go for it.

I myself love to walk, to hike. I could walk 30, 35 kilometers (6, 7 hours) and not get bored. The fact that walking is the best possible exercise is an added bonus.

Actually, I don't put too much effort into "exercise". I just pick a few activities that I enjoy and go for it. The rest takes care of itself. I can't handle the boring routine of a gym. I had a two year membership at the gym, went for 6 months and then dropped it. My wife couldn't believe we had to pay the monthly fees and I was sitting on the couch....haha. And I'm with Anna, sex is right up there on my list of activities, sans Cialis or Viagra. It's done wonders for the stiffness in my hip joints and other areas.

Those health club memberships are not cheap (my son has one). That is another advantage of walking, it is free, doesn't cost you anything.

Cycling then swimming.

Walking doesn't do much unless you really push it.

This from someone who dropped 70# in 8 months doing both.

Unless you are walking at least 4 mph or on a steep grade, you are quite correct - it's a good exercise for old ladies. Like one poster said swimming works every muscle.

Depends upon what you want to do. Walking is the best form of exercise to keep you in shape, for the overall body. If you are trying to reduce weight, it may not be very effective. But when it comes to reducing weight, I don’t think any exercise is very effective. The surefire way of reducing weight is to cut down on caloric intake.

Exercise may help in that it can tone up the metabolism. But exercise itself does not burn enough calories to make any appreciable difference (unless you are doing high impact aerobics or something similar).

I looked up walking, and it is a great exercise to reduce weight.

Even though a walk won’t burn lots of calories just look at the positive benefits of walking:
·Higher percentage of body fat burned
·Increase health & fitness
·Boost energy levels
·Decrease in health risks

Walking also reduces many health risks.

See the attached link for the actual weight loss accomplished by exercise.
Calories Burned During Exercise

For instance walking uphill can burn over 400 calories per hour, so if you do it for 20 minutes a day, over the course of one year you will lose 400 * 3 X 365 * 3500 =13.9 lbs. That is just for that little bit of exercise alone, naturally you will also be doing other exercise as well. Hope that puts to sleep the myths being perpetrated on this thread.

I've been walking about 340 days a year for almost 12 years and my weight is constant at approx. 25 lbs. less than when I started and I can eat pretty as much of anything I like. The factor of exercise in weight loss just can not be under estimated. Just look at the people you see out walking and jogging every day- you just don't see many fatties (just the ones getting started)

Health Benefits of Walking

The OP wanted to know how to reduce weight and get into shape 'quickly'. The aerobic, cardio excercises
will do that trick much better than walking, unless one does as JLM describes, by adding uphill to the
walking, and do it long enough to 'work' the heart.

Walking is a great excercise, but doesn't answer the question and doesn't do anything to increase the work
on the heart enough, as the heart muscle needs to be addressed in cardio workouts, and creates a quicker
result on the body.

Of course calorie burning reduces weight, but does not give tone and firmness to the body, excercise must
be added to the regime to accomplish that.

anything that makes your heart work, and work hard over a period of time at least 3 to 4 times a week, will
make an impact on your body shape, but as you add muscle and reduce fat, your weight won't necessarily come
down very much, that is normal, but just measure yourself and see the difference, and when you add a healthy
sensible diet to that, you will see success.

regular walking everyday will keep you toned and feeling good, and it's good for the joints as well.

Baloney as usual.

The experts will tell you that swimming is the best all round exercise that a person can do. It's little wonder then why it's one of the most popular forms of aerobic exercise going. You really can swim to slim as it's an excellent and accessible activity for anyone who wants to get fit and stay that way. So, if you're feeling a bit out of shape and want to tone up and feel good about yourself, keep it simple and start a swimming program today.

Walking also does not affect the range of muscles that swimming does. It makes sense, because walking is one single form of movement whereas swimming has various forms (backstroke, dog paddle, breast stroke, etc.) 2 or 3 swimming styles can accomplish vast amounts more than simply walking can.
As usual, Joey is babbling through his hat.

Swimming is definitely better- walking doesn't build the breasts.:lol::lol:

And you can get double the effect from swimming by just swimming the same amount of time in water that is under 10C.

Walking is very good from the point of view that it is convenient for the vast majority of people and for those who are limited in what they can physically manage and is good if it can be done over a long period of time at high intensity. For weight loss and muscle building and cardio vascular there are better exercises. Swimming is probably the very best followed by cross country skiing, ice skating, climbing stairs and walking uphill. Walking does not exercise all the muscles like swimming does.

Right. Any kinesiologist will tell you that swimming is the single best exercise for all around physiological benefit. Walking is good, but it is limited in range of muscular benefit and if done too much, or with ill-fitting shoes can damage joints, tendons, ligaments, and even the spine.

I'm sure you are right, but there is that little inconvenience of being very wet, so I pick things that
keep me dry, and the only bit of moisture is a little sweat.
I only like to do my hair once a day if possible, don't have that perfect hair
that is thick, dries perfectly right into place, my hair has to be 'worked' every
time I do it, takes a little time before it looks nice.

These are little inconveniences in life that I try to avoid as much as possible.
