What are we doing in Afghanistan?

We are in Afghanistan because Bush used Harper as a tool to show the world that there is a possibility that someone believed in his agenda. I was watching a show on the military network saying how Russia failed in Afghanistan. It said they didn't really care about peoples thoughts, but rather what they thought the people thought and that is the same thing with us we say we are doing the best for the Afghan people, but they are afraid that they will be killed by us or the Taliban in the middle of fighting. The Taliban might not have given lots of freedoms, but atleast they gave a somewhat peaceful state to the people.

About what I would expect from someone with NDP in their handle....

first of all, we are in Afghanistan fulfilling our international treaty commitments.....always a good idea. The USA was attacked by terrorists based in Afghanistan, and we were required to respond under both North American defense treaties and Article Five of the NATO alliance treaty........in addition, the mission is approved by the idol the NDP kneels before, the usually useless United Nations.

The USSR's mission in Afghanistan was to de-populate the countryside in support of a puppet gov't in the cities.......this they did using the most horrendous methods, including dropping contact mines that were designed to look like toys.........not nice. The population rose against them as one.

We, fortunately, are in a much better position with the people of the country.....but that's not the point.....preventing the re-establishment of a terrorist safe haven is the point.....

It's never totally reavealing to view the past through an ideological lens (Us good, ugh; them bad!). This conversation in the former Soviet Union could just as easily be in NATO headquarters today. Click here.

OK. Those terrorists were (and still are supposedly) still based in the hills of Pakistan...

BBC - American government told other governments about Afghan invasion IN JULY 2001.

US 'planned attack on Taleban'
The wider objective was to oust the Taleban
By the BBC's George Arney
A former Pakistani diplomat has told the BBC that the US was planning military action against Osama Bin Laden and the Taleban even before last week's attacks. Niaz Naik, a former Pakistani Foreign Secretary, was told by senior American officials in mid-July that military action against Afghanistan would go ahead by the middle of October.
Mr Naik said US officials told him of the plan at a UN-sponsored international contact group on Afghanistan which took place in Berlin. Mr Naik told the BBC that at the meeting the US representatives told him that unless Bin Laden was handed over swiftly America would take military action to kill or capture both Bin Laden and the Taleban leader, Mullah Omar.
The Afghanistan War was Planned Months Before the 9/11 Attacks

We are a part of NATO and as a part of that group which will show up to defend our country should the need ever arise. So don't knock the people who will sacrifice their children for us as we have and will for them.

The Taliban who made up the quasi-government in Afghanistan, for lack of any other group alive or able to do so. Allowed Al Qeada to not only operate in a safe haven, but set up training camps to train terrorists some of which ended up doing the job in the US.

So when you ask why Canadian forces are in Afghanistan, just revisit the pictures and articles about New York, Washington and the people who were on the planes used to commit these terrible terrible acts.

We may not be the most noble society on the face of the Earth, but then again we're not the worst.

The Iraq war isn't the Afghan war. Don't get confused.

We were not attacked, that was coming for a long time to the US. So why is Harpo on his knees pledging more troops (of which we have few).
NATO or not.

STRICTLY an American problem. Let them weasel their way out of the problem they got themselves into.

Just. We rentn them from the Russians......complete with pilots......some of whom are quite familiar with Afghanistan.

Now that's funny.

BTW, I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition.

No one expects the inquisition. You know we could have gotten perfectly good ( better than perfectly good) Russian choppers years ago if it weren't for certain elements.

No we weren't. But Bushco aside, probably the closest friend and ally was, and remember there were a few Canadians killed in that as well. It may be a dumb dog but it still bites so don't provoke it.

I agree, the two wars are as different as 'black and white', and shouldn't be discussed as
though they are one.
Bush dropped the ball in Afghanistan, that was not 'just' an american situation, there were
people in those buildings from all over the world, including Canada.
His little pea brain was tuned into cheney, and the fact that saddam
tried to kill bush senior,"let's go get him, there's a saying in the old west", remember that?
Remember him standing on the aircraft carrier, with the military jacket on, looking like a
little boy dressed in his daddy's coat, announcing that the war was won in Iraq.
How
embarrassing to listen a world leader spout such rubbish.

But guess what, maybe terrorists were in Afghanistan at the time of 9/11. They are not there now so lets leave and stop wasting money and adding it onto the deficit they we are going to get.
