Using the Lord's name in Vain

Just a subject.

You been in a crowd and had a person say:

OMG
J.... C....!
OMLord
For C.... sakes
G... damnit

and other things insulting God and Jesus.

I always get personally offended when I hear this in public, and even tell my non-religious (not atheist, but not church-goers either), friends not to say it around me.

I always get dirty looks when I say in public not to use that language...

For the record I say: Oh My Gosh.

Also, my other thoughts are, why doesn't this happen to other religious figures.

How come you never hear:

Allah d.....
Buddah!
Mohammed!

and use the other religious figures in vein.

I hate it when people say it, OMG, I have become used to (when I shouldn't) hearing, but when someone says J.C. in vein, I always tell them off.

Thoughts? Why do we bash around a religious name in such an awful matter? Lets get down to the root of WHY?

Just consider yourself lucky it wasn't the F word.

I have said OMG, before, but so far in my life, I have never said

JC!
G dam...

only really said OMG... I would have a heart attack if I said JC! To me that is SO offensive.

Besides if I said that growing up my mother would throw me out of the house.

So, DexterSinister, I have the same type of upbringing as you in that respect, only words my parents ever let me say were bi** sh** da**, but everything else was not tolerated for me to say.

Its just clean vocab.

Gee whisikers that must have been a blinking tough childhood.

I have no idea, Shadow. Some sentiment I suppose.
Anyway, outside of the occasional "sh|t" or the f-word, I manage to keep swearing down to a minimum. Overuse deflates the impact. :D

Using "F" every second or third word isn't too bad but when they start breaking up two syllable words to insert a third syllable I find it gets a bit much/

I know a couple of people that insert the f-bomb in every sentence, and they probably aren't even aware that they are doing it. It is just another word to them.

It doesn't bother me too much except when we're in the company of a couple of 90 year old "grannies" and they still don't have the brains to shut up.

I hear you, JLM. I also agree 100%. People need to remember their manners and be respectful when it is expected(or required).

Sadly, not many people "mind their manners" anymore. The "F" word is as common as the "S" word now. Men have have pretty much always used it in groups of men but thanks to the movies, now everyone in North America uses it. My kids have a student from Germany living with them. He has only been with them for a brief time. He is not shocked at the word but he says that in Germany, people do not swear like they do here. He says that everyone here swears a lot and he's right about that. Half the women I work with are very foul mouthed. Quite honestly - I hate it. I wish it was a rule at work that such language was not permitted by staff. I wish it was a rule on all forums that foul language was not permitted. If we stop allowing it, maybe people will begin to recognize that they are using it too freely. The young women use it but the older women are even worse. That stymies me. Lack of respect for "self".

I agree with you and quite frankly 20 years ago I remember being disgusted at an ignoramus I worked with who used the word in mixed company, but I've become quite desensitized. My son's mother in law, by most standards a highly respectable and fairly well educated woman in her 50s uses the word about every second sentence. I think we have to face the fact we aren't going to win this one.

I read the 1st two posts and this page.......I hope one post in the middle actually has an answer. If you misuse Jesus's name that is forgive, if you misuse God's name that can be forgiven (after being mentioned), if you misuse the Holy Spirit's name you really are courting a disaster of your own making.

Lu:12:10:
And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man,
it shall be forgiven him:
but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

I find it rather amusing that there might be somebody out there that thinks swearing is a ticket to the fiery Lake. On the bigger picture using the Lords name in vain is more likely saying Christ is your master and then commiting some sin that is plainly spelled out in the NT. That is the vanity that will get you roasted.

My best friend use to have a real nasty habit of saying God dammit constantly. Now that he's saved, he has a much more effective way of expressing his frustrations. Instead of GD, he'll say things like "God bless us!!!" or "Lord be with me!!!".

Doesn't it make more sense to ask God for help in a situation rather than blaming him?

I don't have any children, but to the fathers here, surely you can understand. Which would you rather have when YOUR children has a problem. Come to you seeking help or blaming you for the very problem???
