To the original poster people are going to use those words no matter what you can't stop them, oh except Utah god forbid that you say the lords name in vain or say it in any way that could be offensive.

I say those words when i'm really pissed off, upset or just want to piss off everyone around me since it's so against their religion to say anything that could remotely be offensive to them >:} i'm just mean though.

It erks me when people use words like ... indian (in reference to First Nations folks), etc....

You might want to write your MP a letter then; because of when the legislation was originally drafted, they still classify all of their relavant departments with the word Indian. On initial scanning of the government's website, I can see Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, Indian Oil and Gas Canada, Indian Claims Commission and Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada, to name a few.

So you can be an aboriginal person who is a status Indian, living on First Nations land. No wonder immigrants get confused when they arrive here.

When I say "Oh my God", I mean MY God, not yours. My God doesn't even like you.

Got nothing to do with you or your religion.

So stop being offended with no reason.

Funny, but I bet the ad campaign for that thing could be "This machine not only REALLY sucks, it Blows too!!" and no-one should be offended...

And I suppose the epithet "Jesus F$%k" would be pretty ofensive, tho you don't know which Jesus I'd be invoking (I only use that one when totally stunned/shocked, doesn't hapen very much tho)

And mostly I agree with a lot of the sentiment here, I am not usually offended by words themselves unless they are used unimaginiatively- but certain "weasel words" can really get to me, and racism in any form will usually make me stop listening to the peson, regardless of what words they choose to portray it

And TenPenny- that's about what I think too- my "god" actually encourages damning stuff, gives him/her/it something to do- and on top of that, my "god" doesn't really care about anything so small as a person saying stuff...

I always found that fascinating (and I'm not poking fun or anything by posting this). I understand how certain folks would have such a relationship to their faith as to want to be respectful to their deities, and have NO problem with it... but some folks interpretation of the "name in vain" thing I find odd- how could a god be SO mighty, but still have his/her/it's feelings hurt by one of it's own creations??

As I mentioned, my "god" doesn't HAVE feelings in the traditional sense, and really doesn't have any sort of meaninful contact with lower lifeforms- you can see him/her/it EVERYWHERES, and he/her/it IS in fact everywheres, in everything, in no variable amount. (I'll just use "it" here from now on) It doesn't have opinions or feelings or anything, it just IS and that is that. It speaks to me through realities, and the "voice" is always there to hear... there are no reference books, CERTAINLY no representatives (not officially anyways, anyone can choose to represent It in whatever form and whatever way they choose- not that they'd all be right, but whatever floats your boat)

My "god" needs no apologists to explain why things aren't the way "it" wants them, it doesn't care, it empowers ALL equally and THAT is why there is "evil" on this planet, there are no "huge" forces behind it, real "evil" is small and crappy and is ALWAYS the fault of men...

OKAY sorry about that, I just got going and couldn't stop :D

Which reminds me. Does OP watch baseball and/or hockey? Is he/she/it offended by the players named Jesus and Satan?

Glad you asked that, I always wondered that myself sorta tangentially, never enough to bother to phrase it, but this thread is the PERFECT place to ask- I laugh when Satan gets pronounced in the "english" way rather than the proper pronunciation, thinking about the "Dark Lord" streaking in off the wing is a funny concept and has given me many silly visuals :D

Oh hell this is a knee jerk reaction for me being a Quebecer.
French TV won't even censor it even if its in the news.
Besides it was my second language. We are pros at it. King of profanity
I admit it doesn't show class. but its the norm here. WE have no class.
We have the biggest vocabulary of swears. The European french are very tamed compared to us.
It is funny when you hear it with a foreign accent tho.

Truth to tell westmanguy, I don't like to hear that kind of language either, and I'm an atheist. It's just so lame and pointless and unnecessary. If people are going to swear in public, and they are, regrettably, the least they could do is try to be a little more entertaining. Besides, you can't entirely escape your upbringing. I grew up in a deeply religious household, and it was drilled into me from an early age that one simply does not speak that way, it's a sign of an inadequate vocabulary, disrespect, poor self-control, and general intellectual weakness. Some part of me still believes that. I hear 12-year olds talking that way in the malls, and I wince. There's no point in trying to do anything about that, it'll just make it worse, but I don't allow anyone to talk to me that way and nobody's allowed to talk that way in my house. That's all you can do, really: keep your own corner clean.

Your good advice is noted, I would give it greater credit except for the fact that you delivered it standing behind a hostage. I think using a shield in that manner does nothing to enhance ones character. If you visit my house you'll have to leave your cleaning equipment in the driveway, and come to the front door.

I was waitin for a French Canadian perspective, hell, I have well-spoken French friends who can make me blush without trying (or even meaning to)

The fact that "oh F%&k off" is used in the same way as we would say "no way!!" or "get out" is just the tip of the iceberg, the actual Quebecois "religious" swear words are sort of spectacular, blasphemy wise

It's funny, cause weren't some of the same people outraged by religious profanity defending Ann Coulter and her faggot comments? It's the same thing. It may offend you, but it isn't going to be banned anytime soon.

I don't find OMG or JC offensive at all. I don't see how saying "OMG, you're kidding!" is offensive. It's usually just a statement of surprise. If someone took it upon themselves to let me know that offended them, I'd either accept that and continue without using that expression if they were nice about it or tell them to mind their own business if they weren't. I would expect them to show me the same kind of courtesy.

BTW, isn't "God damn it" more of a request than a swear? I thought it was like saying "God bless" something, you're just asking God for what you want.

I could get the dirty corners of my house perfect with that sucker. What kind of bag does it use.
A big old filter actualy.

See the hatch at the bottom, that's where the dirt goes.

When I worked in mining, we used to install them in sumps. Especially in gold mines. They would suck the water up and filter out the heavier gold metals, which would fall to the bottoms.

I don't know if they still use them, but you could suck a HMMV/HUMVEE, through six miles of garden hose with one.

my Cree friends refer to themselves as indians. They laughed at me for saying first nations.
Really? Oh. Well...okay...I was wrong with that one then...what can I say. Actually, I dunno...I guess it depends on the person. To me, to say Indian is disrespectful. I guess First Nations person sounds kinda lame...but...I dunno....it seems to me that the term Indian is...not cool...it shows a disrespect for the background of the folks involved...I mean the term indian came about because explorers who came to north america thought they were in India, so started calling the folks Indians...so, it just seems to me to be very derogatory....but...hey, who am I....I'm mitch hedberg...that's right....
