I was at a friend's house and as a couple of l'il old ladies, we don't really care much about sports. But I said, "Hey, let's turn the TV to CTV and see what happened with the hockey game."

Welp, it was in the last couple of minutes of the OT and when that final goal was scored we were jumping up and down and hollering, "Woo Hoo!" Then the joy of watching the people in the arena and the bar in NS and people on the streets just had us in tears.

In a time where cities are falling down and people are dying needlessly and the world is so full of sorrow, it was so wonderful to feel such glee, and pride to be where we are.

Awesome. :canada:

It was a fantastic game that could have gone either way. Lucky for us - it came our way. The Americans hung their heads in shame when they accepted their silver medal and that in itself was a shame. They had nothing to hang their heads for. They looked angry and they looked about to cry. Grown men for goodness sakes! They should have held their heads high and took their silver medals proudly. There was no shame in winning the silver.
For anyone who doesn't remember it - Hockey is Canada! Canada is hockey!
We were announcing the score today in the store. People were cheering. When we won - whoever announced it just said "WE JUST WON GOLD" and the whole store whooped and hollered and clapped. It was a great moment.

V.I. - I was in a bowling tournament while the game was on, so although I was able to follow the highlights, didn't get a chance to scruitinize the details so didn't witness the behaviour of the Yanks you mention. But I think that is one of the products of the attitude toward winning at all costs today. It's gotten crazy, as one poster said and I think there's a bit of truth in it, Bronze signifies a "win" while silver signifies a "loss". I think the Yanks played a hell of a game- Canada should have had a two goal lead in the final minutes so they wouldn't pull the goalie and it damn near burned them, but Crosby pulled it off anyway. It's too bad there couldn't just be more enjoyment in playing the game than in the prize you win at the end of it. Guess it's another trait of the human animal, just like the collection of wealth at all costs.

talloola...couldn't agree with you more. Bettman was the worst thing to happen to the NHL
The only person who likes bettman is bettman.
There are too many teams in the NHL, and too many losing money.

Love the fights when hockey comes up - some of the best fights in my growing up years were between my dad and brother - all over hockey!

Here's an article on the origin(s) of the game - not quite clear about "who's on first here" either...Origin Overview

When it was over I thought if I never see another hockey game, I will have seen the best one played!

Canadians deserved to win because they didn't let up for one minute - they were on their opponents like....... on.......... and this lasted through until the final puck was sent into the U.S. net

Honestly I would have been disappointed had the U.S. won because they didn't play as well offensively as the Canadian crew....and the gold is where it should be. I
think the players themselves are proud of the way they played but we all know in hockey - someone has to lose! Silver is good enough for the way the game played
out. I'm grateful it didn't go on much longer - I could see the heart attacks lining up at the Vancouver Hospitals!

The game was a testament to the whole Vancouver Olympics which no doubt left a hole in quite a few Canadian pockets and bank accounts...but what a show you guys put on ..... fantastic extras all over the place and the events themselves were
so beautifully done...... even the weather was obeying for the most part!!

Today I'm gonna go buy a nice frame with glass to put up my Olympic 2010 Mittens and hang them proudly in my home as a reminder of a time never to be forgotten......

Thanks for the past two weeks Canadians....It was great. curio

I am not trying to fool anyone. first off, second off... plenty of people care about hockey here. You just don't want to see it.

Hey Critter - Are you on here to add some intelligent ideas/observations or are you just on here to whine? I for one can't stand whiners. From what I can gather you jumped on this forum with some half-baked opinions of questionable validity about the girls hockey celebration without any substantiation, and got shot down over it so live with it. If you are a man you can stand behind your convictions so don't whine. One more suggestion I have if you are planning on posting lengthy diatribes- make them easier to read by taking a spelling/typing 101 course- your writing abilities still leave a lot to be desired.

I think you are right, Hockey is the Canadian game and yet 80% of the teams are in the U.S. BUT I do see the signs of a problem when a city of over 1/2 million people on the Canadian prairie can't support a hockey team? Why is that? Is it the people or is it politics? The move to Phoenix didn't seem to solve anything. Same thing with Quebec City.

Hi JLM

I think Critter's primary language isn't English. He's trying - regardless of what he writes - ease up.

I would rather eat glass then try to type anything other than in English.

Cheers.

Wow! What a tangled path this thread has wove...

On the gold medal game - I was cheering hard for Canada but wouldn't have been too upset if the US had won. My nightmare would have been the US winning in OT after the officicals missed the offside on their first goal. If they HAD won, we'd all be talking about how the refs gave them the game, rather than anything else. My take was that I thought we carried the play, but didn't dominate it until the OT, then it was Canadian rush after rush: it looked like a matter of time.

As for the US looking down/sad/upset, I don't hold that against them: they were on the verge of obtaining one of the pinacles of success in their sport/profession and they fell short by a slim margin. Some of them won't get another shot at it. Ryan Miller was OUSTANDING and it was sad to see him appear so down afterwards.

As for the state of the NHL and Gary Bettman, I still say too many people blame him for what his bosses (the owners) tell him to do. He has expanded the NHL by 8 teams, not 24, including the resurrection of the Ottawa Senators. He has reacted to the market and realities of the sport. Sure, I think teams in Tampa and Nashville seem wierd, but I also admit that the 'Peg and QC don't have the populations to sustain the teams when player salaries are as high as they are. People want to blame Bettman, but its the fault of past GMs & ownship of teams like the Blues, Rangers and Leafs that they went the way they did.

And for those who want to rub salt in Critter's wounds, lay off: the Canadian way is to win with class and treat your opponent with dignity, like Sid, Stevie Y or Joe Sakic, not to rub their nose in defeat. And lets be honest, the USA's hockey program is our child: they patterned their teams/systems after us, use players and staff we help develop and play the same style. Even if we would have lost, we won.

Congrats Canada. I did not think we'd be able to pull it off and beat you twice.

As for Critter...I told you Critter a couple of days ago you were setting yourself up for a world of hurt talking smack about USA Hockey on a Canadian forum.

There been plenty of your people whinning on these boards so don't even try to tell me my opioions are half bank when you would of done the exact same thing if the ladies of usa won. period. don't try to hide behind a computer im not stupid. whats your people stop with throwing insults maybe there be more intelligent talking.

Critter, this quote sums up whats wrong with you, in my opinion. You complain about people's outlook on your opinions and then you define their opinions for them (or attempt to). Its hypocritical and judgemental. I don't know you, and can only react to what you say but the same token you don't know me and aren't an authority on what/how I think, feel or react. You assume too much knowledge from a small portion of text.

My apologies - didn't understand but still don't understand why you have an attitude with people you don't even know.

Having major problems communicating on a forum is understandable, people from all over the world whose English is not even "second" language still have a try at
saying "hello" to Canadian people - I think it is terrific.

It isn't the language barrier Critter - it's the striking out at us when you can make a point without putting people down.... hang in there and give people time to get used to you before you throw your weight around.
