They don't have time to tow the vehicle. There's a fire, remember. They can't run it over teh roof becasue the angle is to steep off the connection and chokes your supply. Smashing teh windows is the fastest way to do it. The down side I would see is that if you did want to move the car at some point, you'd either have to disconnect the hose or cut some structural steel on the car chassis.
I have a simple solution... don't park in front of the fire hydrant and you don't get a hose run through your car.

And that is what I am sort of.
I drive in Boston a lot and there is ZERO chance that this will ever happen to me. I cannot tell you how many times I've driven around Boston looking for a spot and say...
"Oh! There's a spot! ..... damn... a fire hydrant."
Then I keep on driving.
All wonderful advice. Do you have any advice for firemen who would smash the car windows and put large dents in the car doors and fender when it wasn't needed.?:smile:
I don't understand how this only got on this forum today. CNN has had wall to wall coverage of this fire-hose window break trauma for 47 hours. Boy are you guys out of touch.
A $100.00 fine is an appropriate fine for someone parked in front of a fire hydrant, to encourage them not to do so again.
A $100.00 fine for someone parked in front of a fire hydrant that is needed for a fire is inappropriate. They should have smashed that car into a dinky toy. I do not have any patience or tolerance for this type of blatant egotism.
These same kinds of azzholes are the ones that don't pull over for the fire trucks and ambulance either. I wonder how they would feel if that was their home burning. At the rate fire jumps per second, not too happy I bet. Seconds count. he is drawing some bad stuff to himself.

It is not vandalism and is quite legal. Meanwhile parking in front of a hydrant is not and could actually be considered as endangering the public.
What they should have done is take a saw and cut the car in half. That way the idiot that parked there could have been fined twice.
That is a sixinch hose. The side outlete are normally only 21/2 inch.
Besides anyone that parks a beemer in front of a hydrant doesn't deserve any consideration.
I guess none of you morons yapping about straight hose happened to notice the kinks between the hydrant and the car, kind of puts that theory in the dark what
Plus if you look at the pics Eagle posted the one with the SUV has the hos curling under the vehicle only to then come back out and up through the windows....but they couldn't go under it. :roll:
Take another look at the pics. You will see a 6" outlet staring you in the face pointing to the rear of the vehicle where they could have easily run the hose without damaging the car. Face it, this was intentionally done to create damage and not for ease or expediency.
