Controversial South Dakota legislation would extend the definition of justifiable homicide to cover killing anyone trying to cause a fetus harm.

Abortion-rights activists charge that Bill 1171 would legalize the murder of abortion providers.

Eight people have died in the U.S. since 1993 in attacks on abortion clinics; hundreds more faced death threats, assault or attempted murder.

The South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families calls it “the bill to decriminalize shooting doctors, nurses, patients and volunteers at clinics.”

South Dakota Republican Rep. Phil Jensen, sponsor of the much-amended bill, told the Star he’s just trying to make the laws consistent.

“This code deals with illegal acts,” he said before an afternoon legislative battle over the bill. “Abortion is legal, so it has nothing to do with abortion.”

Nevertheless, Democrats in the legislation were introducing another amendment Tuesday to specifically exclude abortion providers.

“The bill in South Dakota is an invitation to murder abortion providers,” Vicki Saporta, the president of the National Abortion Federation, the professional association of abortion providers, told Mother Jones magazine.

The Mother Jones story has whipped up a storm of protest across the Internet.

There have been no abortion providers in South Dakota since 1994.

The original bill made no mention of “the protection of certain unborn children.” A series of amendments in the state House Judiciary committee added the language, which passed Feb. 9.

“Say, for instance, an ex-boyfriend, or the lover of someone who is married who doesn’t like paying child support, beats a woman on her abdomen to try to abort the baby. That is what this is going to be dealing with,” Jensen said.

The law would protect the woman and “others who come to her aid,” he said.

South Dakota law already allows for a charge if a fetus dies during commission of a crime.

If abortion were illegal in South Dakota, would this law make killing an abortion provider justifiable homicide?

“Anything can happen,” said Jensen, who describes himself as a “Reagan Conservative.”

South Dakota voters rejected a ban on abortion in referendums in 2006 and 2008, Mother Jones reported.

That IS nuts!

Prediction: out he goes, next election.

There are far too many nuts on the right.

But you have to be nuts to be on the left.

Anyone know why it is that so many anti abortionists do not have the necessary plumbing to ever be in the position to have to make that decision?

I doubt it's a "right" thing,
there are just as many left nutters out there who value human life a little too much and would be upset about losing a "future proletariat" to abortion (you can claim that Stalin wasn't a Marxist but he had Marxist companions who agreed with him on banning abortion).

Well the Republican party isn't known to be a left wing organization. No one is talking about Stalin and Marx both of whom are dead I might point out. This story is about Republicans, a right wing political party in the US, tabling a bill to decriminalize killing someone who causes harm or kills a fetus. To date no Democrat in the US has tabled a bill that would decriminalize murdering a doctor who performs an abortion. Making it defacto legal to kill those who perform abortions.

I hope to have removed all doubt from your mind that this is in fact, a "right" thing.

Since 1950 the world population has almost tripled. We are consuming this planet and it's resources at such a rate that in those years we have done as much damage as we have since we became human over two hundred thousand years ago. The debate about abortion is rather silly considering that many children born today may not live to old age because we are quickly turning this planet into a desolate waste land. I believe that all life is sacred and that all life is interconnected and interdependent. But we have upset the balance of nature because we see ourselves as something separate from the rest of nature. We were, as some believe, created in the image of god. That makes us very special, at least in our warped little minds. We are not special. We are just part of the continuum of life of this finite planet. Our greed and avarice threaten to destroy all life, including our own. It is time to a long, hard look at our place and responsibility to this planet we call home. We would not crap on the carpets of our own dwellings, but we are crapping in our own drinking water and filling up vast areas of the landscape with our garbage.

We don't need more children. We don't need more "development". We don't need more economic "progress". We need to figure out a way to live on this planet in a more sustainable way if our children are going to be able to live to see their own grand children grow. We are at the tipping point, the point of no return. We need to take action. We need to lower our expectations and consume less. The abortion debate is paralyzing us with emotional reactionary schisms. We need to stop reacting to life and start responding to it. Our lives and those of future generations depend on it. Abortions is an issue that divides us when we should be working together to figure out how we can maintain living and life on this rock.

Absolutely correct Cliff. And if liberals aborting themselves will help save the planet, I am all for it!

Right now those liberal tards are telling us we can save the planet by recycling pop cans, playing with our garbage, and using cute curly light bulbs.

And right tards are telling us we need to kill off all other religions and their adherents because our god is better than theirs, we are better than them and our form of government is better.

And your simpleton views of politics prove that your intelligence lies somewhere south of your navel.

Actually, we rightards are advocating the death of islamofascists and terrorists...but if you liberals want to be killed by them rather than your reluctant parents, I am good with that too.
