Re: The rape case against Wikileaks' Julian Assange

It wasn't done in sceret and nobody released any information for a fee to see or hear it.

There is no copyright or IP law that applies to documents within a government or government funded agancy because the government isn't sepearate from you and me it is you and me so if anyone owns anything it is you and me.
They were private, not public. Wikileaks is (was) commercial.

Anyway, he decided to play in the big boy's sandbox and he'll pay the price, whichever way you want it sliced. Hope he enjoys it.

Sure, from some perspectives (like the US gov't) this is a bad thing. In terms of revealing international strategies, it is a dangerous thing. In terms of transparency, it's actually quite amusing (Canadian TV spoofs put White House in a tizzy). Should the messanger be shot? I don't think so.

If you're taking getting a pay cheque from the public anything you do say or think is public domain.

Assange knew this was coming and the real serious papers are going to come out just before or during his trial. He wouldn't only release a portion without having a major ace in the hole that will truly put the world on it's ass.

I hope you're ready for it.

Currently Assange is in prison and being denied bail, while awaiting an extradition hearing. Its unlikely that Assange will be released on bail while awaiting extradition to Sweden, which will likely take years.... All for allegedly failing to use a condom. Who would have thought that not using a condom could lead to years of prison time. These charges and the long incarceration process have nothing to do with Assange pssing off powerful people. This is what normally happens to people who fail to use condoms during consensual sex in a free society....

Assange's arrest in London earlier this week indicated that the West isn't as democratic as it thinks it is, Putin suggested.

"If there is democracy, it must be a full one. Why did they jail Mr. Assange? Is that democracy?" Putin said at a news conference Thursday. "You know what our villagers say: while someone's cow is mooing, yours better be silent." The Russian expression is loosely equivalent to the pot calling the kettle black.

"So I would like to shoot the puck back at our American colleagues," said Putin.

Obviously freedom has limits. Free speech doesn't include yelling "FIRE!" in a crowded theatre to start a panic. Free religion doesn't include imposing your religious views on others.... and so on.

I see this event as a new threat. I expect that the US and most countries will revise their laws to limit freedom to deal with situations like that created by wikileaks release of classified information.

BTW, I agree with the need to keep state secrets. I wouldn't want nuclear weapon designs to be posted on the internet or distrubted by bit torrents, but I expect that will happen sooner or later...

This from the guy that has his critics murdered in the streets of London. :)

Pro-WikiLeaks demonstrations have been held across Australia against the arrest of Julian Assange, the whistleblowing website's founder.
In Sydney, around 500 demonstrators gathered on Friday, to push for the release of Assange, who is in a British jail fighting extradition to Sweden on sex crime allegations.
A group of WikiLeaks supporters also staged a rally in Brisbane, calling on the Australian government to respect freedom of expression.
