How many threads do we have to have on the subject before it becomes clear that for the most part Canadians are content to have Elizabeth as our Queen. Count me among those who support the Monarchy.

I don't know.

I also don't know what most Canadians think about the monarchy. Last I heard from some acquaintances at U of T and the military was that informal polls saw a decrease in support. But their surveys, like the ones on this forum, are not official or statistically valid.

Where there is will there is a way, there is no will in Canada. Looking in from the outside, even if support for the Monarchy dwindles, the mere mention of a Constitutional Amendment or anything else that disrupts the status quo brings shivers to the average Canadian.

Way past time to dump the inbred foreign rulers. It is embarrassing in this day and age to have an unelected foreigner as our head of state.

Turf 'em

I've heard all the excuses, and none of them have won my heart over to the monarchist camp.

1. "It's our heritage" - no, it's British heritage

2. "It's what distinguishes us from Americans" - no, if that's what you think really separates us from them, then you have a piss-poor idea of what a Canadian really is. Besides, if we insist on distinguishing ourselves from Americans based on meaningless trivialities, we might as well do something totally useful, like converting entirely to the metric system, etc.

3. "Keeping them saves a few bucks. The Queen is free" This is the worst one. This is the part of the Canadian psyche I don't like: when we think of money before substance. The price tag doesn't matter, what matters is the ability to unleash ourselves from years of cultural servitude. Even if you think it's benign and harmless, I have to stare at the Queen's mug everyday on my twenty dollar bills and coins reminding myself that we are still not entirely masters of our own house.

Your thoughts?
No - Trudumb should go!

yes, count me in too. many people aren't interested in our history. I am happy to be connected to the
monarchy, quite content, I like the peace, I like the class, I like the tradition, and I don't want
to just throw away all that they did to give this country a kick start, especially here in the west,
as right now we could be part of the u.s., who were not far away from working their way right up thru
our westcoast to devour it for their own. thanks to the railroad being built and brought right to our
coast to establish our presence and keep us all Canadian.

the u.s. were very reluctant to join world war 2, they were determined to stay out, the meeting that
took place in the martimes between Roosevelt and Churchill changed all of that. so many who
weren't alive at that time, ignore history and like to spout out about kicking the monarchy out,
but they don't know the facts, they don't know much of anything concerning our history.

England was in big trouble, London was being bombed, and hitler had rumbled his way through france,
and began his devastation of London, and had the u.s. 'not' joined, the outcome could of, and
most likely would have been devastating for England.

I love our history, I love my country, and I love and respect the monarchy.

I doubt very much whether one's lack of interest in history has much to do with getting rid of the monarchy. For most, it's a question of fair value for cost, and to a lesser degree, modernization of our government.

If you are a student of history, you will know that Canada was not legally compelled to enter WWII. The Statute of Westminster, in 1931, prevented England from ordering Canada to war. IOW, whatever Britain's Parliament decided, i.e., going to war with Germany, did not apply to the Dominion of Canada. As a result, the Canadian Parliament approved our participation.

WRT history, there is a much longer standing and more important part of it that is largely ignored. That of the aboriginal people here. We're too busy waving the Union Jack to be bothered with native bands. Although, successive Canadian governments have been more than happy to legislate the heck out of them.

How about you show us how something else will give fairer value for cost. In all my years, I have yet to see any anti monarchist whiner come up with anything.

As a matter of fact, Canada showed her independence in 1914 by not officially declaring war until Aug 5, the day after Great Britain did.

Who exactly died because of the Queen?

My father-in-law, combat veteran of World War II in the Canadian Army, requested he be buried with the Union Jack, as he fought for King and Country..........

But he was a US citizen at the time, so it doesn't count.

:)

Thank your broad forehead for this story

Reasons to keep the Monarchy:

1. It works

2. Getting rid of it would require extensive modification of the Constitution, which means opening it for all issues.

3. Just to remove the Crown would require unanimous consent across the provinces.....impossible.

4. Tradition.

5. The symbolism of forcing the Monarch to mouth the words of the representative of the people.....our triumph over the Divine Right of Kings.
god .. when does COLPEXIT happen...
