Burwash used to supply a lot of produce for local tables - thus earning plenty of its own keep. Since it closed and was eventually sold, it provides trespassers ... who are never profitable
Yes those prison farms provided a lot of services as well as retraining and rehabilitating prisoners.
The Guelph Reformatory raised livestock which they sold in the community and to local butchers. The public could take their vehicles there to be serviced, they made furniture which was sold, raised their own food products and enough to sell. The inmates cooked, did the laundry and the cleaning. They landscaped the grounds.
I don't know what the authorities were thinking of to close them down when they were so successful.

In 2012, O'Keefe pleaded guilty and was convicted of sexually assaulting the woman's three-year-old daughter.
He was sentenced to one year in jail.
The woman, who can't be identified in order to protect the identity of her daughter, was in court to hear the sentence for his latest convictions.
She's been keeping close contact with O'Keefe's other victims by phone.
"They are overwhelmed. We were all hoping for two years plus a day," she said. "We wanted him to be shipped off to a federal penitentiary, that was our goal."
"The Crown asked for six to eight years … but the fact that he got five years, we were not expecting it."

A 61-year-old grandfather of seven who drove from Edmonton to Victoria to have sex with a five-year-old girl and her mother has been sentenced to 18 months in jail followed by three years of probation.
Brian Steve Bandura pleaded guilty Wednesday to communicating with a person electronically to make arrangements to commit a sexual offence against a child.
“There is no doubt this is a very, very grave offence,” Victoria provincial court Judge Carmen Rogers said. “Planning a sexual offence against a five-year-old can only be described as abhorrent.”
In fact, there was no child victim. On April 6, a Victoria police detective went into an online chatroom, posing as a 26-year-old single mother named Lizzie, who had a five-year-old daughter called Sassy.
In the chatroom, Lizzie expressed an interest in incest and “family fun.” She was soon approached by Bandura, who was using the name Daddy14. Over the next seven weeks, Lizzie and Daddy14 carried on a graphic and extremely disturbing conversation, Rogers said. Bandura said he was sexually attracted to young girls, helpless girls and bondage.
Bandura started to plan a trip to Victoria. He talked about teaching Sassy how to perform oral sex, binding the young girl and making her watch him having sex with her mother, digital penetration and even intercourse with the five-year-old, Rogers said. Bandura also coached Lizzie on how she might prepare Sassy for a sexual encounter.
Bandura booked a hotel room in Victoria for the weekend of May 27 and was arrested when he arrived
In his car, police found a large number of items used for bondage and sadomasochism, including whips, paddles, chains, probes with electric currents running through them, ropes, handcuffs, dog collars, riding crops, bamboo sticks and canes, duct tape with smiley faces, a pair of weighted black leather gloves and a black hood with no eye holes.
Police found images of very young girls on his phone, and other social media chats about bondage with at least one underage female, said Rogers.
Crown prosecutor Clare Jennings asked for a jail sentence of 18 to 24 months. Defence lawyer Jordan Watt asked for a nine-month jail sentence.
Bandura addressed the court, telling Rogers he had had six months to think about his actions and he is disgusted by his behaviour.
“I feel sick inside thinking about what I might have done … I know we have to protect children. They are innocent,” he said.
Rogers found the aggravating factors in the case to be the very young age of the proposed victim, the length of the communications, the extensive number of the communications, the sexual activities Bandura was planning, and the bondage and sadomasochistic equipment in his car. She also noted that this was not the only time Bandura had engaged in sexual discussions with a child.
Rogers found the mitigating factors to be Bandura’s guilty plea and his lack of a criminal record. She noted that Bandura raised his four children mostly as a single parent. Although his eldest daughter has nothing to do with him, his two youngest children wrote letters in support of him. Bandura is still allowed to see five of his seven grandchildren.
Also mitigating is the fact that Bandura has worked all his life. He was a heavy-duty mechanic for 20 years but lost that job when he was charged with this criminal offence.
Rogers said she accepted Bandura’s remorse and his willingness to engage in counselling to ensure he does not offend again in future, although Rogers said she had little information to judge his risk of offending in the future.

A Toronto man who was found guilty of sexual assault after a judge ruled the victim was too drunk to consent has fled to Pakistan, and police believe Moazzam Tariq will likely never face justice.
Crown prosecutor Jill Witkin told CityNews on Thursday she is “extremely disappointed and concerned” that he was allowed to leave Canada with a fake passport.
“This demonstrates the fact that (the Canadian Police information Centre) is not regularly updated … It is a big risk to public safety,” Witkin said.
And, it’s not the first time Tariq has fled Canada for Pakistan. It also happened after he was charged with dangerous driving in 2010.
“Had we known his history, he would have been in custody immediately” upon his conviction, Judge Mara Greene said on Thursday.

The Crown is seeking a prison sentence of between 30 and 36 months.
The drama continued outside the courthouse with Burden approaching a CBC camera operator, lifting his pant leg to show his prosthetic, and his shirt to show the scars to his abdomen.

A 50-year-old Hamilton man arrested in a child sex and Internet exploitation case involving a young girl offered through Craigslist for sex has been sentenced to just over three-and-a-half years in prison.
John Gallagher, who did not have contact with the girl, pleaded guilty in October to possession of child pornography and making child pornography.
Gallagher was sentenced Friday to three years and seven months in penitentiary, with credit for time served while in custody. Since he was arrested in July, he has three years left to serve.
He is prohibited for life from attending a public park or swimming pool where anyone under 16 is present, having contact with anyone under 16, or using the Internet unless with certain conditions. He is also prohibited from communicating with two other adults involved in the Craigslist allegations.
Hamilton police were part of a six-month investigation with other police services after receiving information in May from the Hamilton Catholic Children's Aid Society and interviewing a seven-year-old girl who had been assaulted by her mother's boyfriend.
The boyfriend, a 34-year-old Hamilton man, was arrested on May 3 and faces charges in 40 sex offences including nine counts of sexual interference and 10 of making child pornography.
The police investigation discovered the girl had been sexually assaulted by more than one person and that she was also made available to be sexually assaulted by others through Craigslist.
This information led Hamilton police to create Project Links, which executed 14 search warrants, seized 100 electronic devices and computers, and arrested five additional people, including Gallagher, who was charged on July 13.
Project Links also discovered information about child sex exploitation in other police jurisdictions and shared information with other police agencies.
This led to the arrest of three more men, including Geoffrey Burnet, 48, who was in recent years a Hamilton teacher with Columbia International College and the Hamilton Catholic school board.

A man from Airdrie, Alta., has admitted to strangling his common-law wife and burning her body in an abandoned building because he wanted to go drink beer at Boston Pizza with a friend.
Duane Redelback pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Thursday in the 2006 death of Ruth Degayo, whose burned body was found in an abandoned building in Exshaw, about 20 kilometres east of Canmore.
Redelback said he wrestled the couple's son, who was two at the time, from Degayo and put the boy in his bedroom.
The couple continued to fight and Redelback said he strangled and smothered her until she stopped breathing.
He tied her up, placed her body in a garbage bag and stuffed her into a suitcase that he put in the trunk of his car.
He then went to Boston Pizza for drinks with a friend, leaving the child alone.
Redelback then drove back to his house to check on his son before heading to the abandoned building in Exshaw where he doused the suitcase in gasoline and lit it on fire.
"The f**king flames were like 30-feet high," said Redelback to undercover officers.
Justice Karen Horner accepted a joint recommendation of a 15-year prison sentence proposed by Der and Sawa. He gets two years credit for the time he's already served.

The last of three “Scream” masked bandits to be sentenced for bank robbery and multiple violent crimes received 1,888 years in prison.
Tyrone Javonne Richardson, who was convicted as a habitual criminal, was handed the extremely long sentence on Tuesday, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. It was Richardson’s 4th felony conviction case.
In November, Richardson and co-defendants Myloh Mason and Miguel David Sanders were found guilty on multiple criminal counts including attempted murder, assault, kidnapping, aggravated robbery, burglary, eluding, and aggravated motor vehicle theft. Richardson and Mason were charged with 37 counts, while Sanders was charged with 38 counts.
In December, Sanders was sentenced to 371 years in prison. In March, Myloh Mason was sentenced to 1,200 years in prison.
On Nov. 18, 2015, the armed trio robbed a FirstBank at 1940 S. Kipling Parkway, threatening employees and locking them in the bank’s vault before fleeing with $50,000 in cash.
During their escape, the robbers ditched a stolen car and switched to a rental car as part of their planned getaway.
After crashing, they broke into a home on West Eldorado Place and attempted to kidnap a 65-year-old man at gunpoint. The man tried to elude them by running down his driveway and was shot in the leg.
