I didn't see that in the article - all I see is that they were euthanized. Still, a few shots would have done the trick and the church breadlines would be serving a good feast for the poor!

A horrible waste.

I can understand why they had to go......I mean, what other bird is so large? I am no expert, but I would guess their size makes them an increased threat to jet engines.

People or geese?

People win.

I wish we would do the same in Toronto, there are literally thousands upon thousands of them. Most of them don't even bother migrating anymore as they can live off garbage and whatnot.

I would much rather they do this to the wonderful swarm...I mean flock....of crows that visit here in the Winter. 400 geese? That is nothing! Try having over 100 000 crows taking craps everywhere! And that number is not an exaggeration(it actually could be higher!).8O

Crows love to eat carrion. So, keep moving.:p

"The birds were placed in garbage cans and gassed with carbon dioxide, a local newspaper reported, before being served up as meals at local homeless shelters."

As in NY, here in Gopherland Canadian Geese are known as pesky critters who are overly generous with the amount of fertilizer they drop and don't bother to pick up......

Ah, so like a typical Canadian then?

We too are pesky critters who are overly generous and have no issue unloading a pile of bullsh*t on everybody to deal with while we walk away with a smile...... eventually someone is going to get fed up with us too and eradicate our population.

Somebody would have to be listening though. :)

Put signs to that effect around the park...

"Feeding the geese means they don't migrate, and they reach problematic numbers, this means we have to eradicate them. it is NOT doing them a favour."
A few places have posted such signs and stated what the fines were. The last time I was in Penticton there were these signs. And the signs were blatantly ignored. lol One empty lot by the lakeshore (and the Regional District offices) was a popular place for the geese because people fed them. One guy even carried a 5 gallon pail there full of birdfood every day.
They do the same across the lake here by the ferry landing. lol

Now if they'd just legalize hunting Canadian Geese in city parks using
a bun squeezed around a fish-hook connected to a Pocket-Fisherman
(& then a bat to finish it quickly after they're reeled in), this problem
would quickly cure itself, and it would be a true cull of the nuisance
birds that hang around for the human handouts...and not every
goose that happens to just stop in on their travels.

I used to have the pocket fisherman.... I've never found line that would reel in a fighting goose... lol

Considering I've used the heaviest line and lost some pike, I can't see how reeling in a goose would work
lol Probably not.
We have one. It's ok for dangling off a dock or our bridge and catching the brookies or ice fishing with. :))

Why? Considering the amount of damage to the planet that humans do, it might be prudent to cull our herds.

NYC authorities euthanize flock of 400 Canada geese - CTV News

I can understand reducing their population, but they just gassed an entire population and it sounds from those who visited the area often, that they wiped them all out......

.... all because of one incident of hitting a couple with a plane.... sure people could have died, but they didn't.

How many sea gulls do they hit?

How about Crows or other birds?

Pigeons??

Should they start wiping them all out as well?

Should take out a couple of them bald eagles too while they're at it... oh wait..... never mind.

Then you have another city wiping them all out because they don't like birds pooping in a park? Cripes....

I like how they use the word "Cull"

A cull is the act of removing animals from a larger group of those animals under certain criteria, usually removing undesirable traits from a group or to control a population to a manageable number..... as an example, the seal hunt is a cull because there is a set number allowed to be killed from the overall group during a limited period of time.

These people didn't cull, they killed every single bird they could find and wiped out entire flocks.

While this one action may not hold any serious damage to the overall species..... I'm a tad concerned about the possibility of them continually doing this annually with with little regulation except to snatch up as many as you can find and kill them without regard...... after a few years of this, and if more cities and States begin to do this to the Canadian Geese, there could be some serious problems.

I understand the concerns this pose to aircraft in certain areas, but this seems a little too excessive of a reaction if you ask me.... I mean hell, you got people using them as target practice with crossbows.

Oops. They sussed out the Canadian Air Force's secret weapon.

But on a serious note, if they're going to kill Canada Geese, at least don't put them to waste while people are starving in the world. Could they not have killed them and then given them to a local food bank? Or if there was no immediate need, then make jerky out of them and save them for later when food banks might need more food?
We don't waste food when people are starving.

... And this is a vegan saying this.

On just about any given day at least 400 geese (adults and babies) cross Bishop Grandin Blvd. here in Winnipeg.

Traffic stops and waits.

No big deal.

But if the geese endanger air traffic, that is a different and far more serious story. Sad it may be, but there is no other choice, but to exterminate them.

The Miracle on the Hudson can happen only once.

Fair enough, but don't put them to waste. If you have to kill such a plump bird, then at least either give it to a food bank as fresh meat or dry it for storage for when the food bank does need it. That's a lot of quality meat there.
