we allow the "whackjobs" to be a threat by recognizing them as being more than the thugs and criminals that they are.

There certainly is a threat of home grown terrorism. We witnessed it during the G8/G20 summit in TO and Quebec City being perpetrated by the police and their agent provocateurs..
