Hate crimes are up because we keep changing the definition of what a "hate crime" is, not because of any sudden societal behavioral change.

Oh really?
In Canada, using the wrong gender pronoun is now a hate crime,

Is it? Proof?

Public outcry does not equal 'crime', btw.

a few years ago we didn't even really know or care what a gender pronoun was,

A lot of people don't care today, either. What people care about is whether you're an asshole about it.

now we've made up literally dozens out of thin air.

Or maybe parts of society realize that there are more than just he/she to gender.

I get it though, it's confusing/upsetting for people to not be exactly like you want them to be or tell them to be. Damn those rebels!

And if you get it wrong or don't care to engage in the silliness...hate crime.

Again, proof?

(Hint: that's not a thing https://www.mcgilldaily.com/2017/09/no-pronouns-wont-send-you-to-jail/
https://factcheck.afp.com/no-canadians-cannot-be-jailed-or-fined-just-using-wrong-gender-pronoun )

For clarity, I actually think the whole pronoun thing is getting stupid myself. If you call someone the wrong pronoun and they ask that you don't use that pronoun, then DON'T, simple as that. If you continue to do so because you think it's 'silly' or whatever, then that's on YOU making it more an issue than it needs to be.

That said, the whole ze/zhe/zer/zim WTF ever is annoying. Those that use other pronouns than he/she/they/them can't expect all of society to know instantly what the pronouns are that a person wants to use. Stop making it a fucking issue (unless the person is rude/ignorant AF then fine, have at)

That whole singular/plural blurring thing I find weird. Humans are nothing if not adaptable but this is a stumbling point for me mentally.

They & them are plural to me. Self-identifying as a small crowd just seems bizarre (unless the individual person is actually a small crowd I guess, like two or more midgets in a trench coat).

They/Them is more for the non-binary or maybe even gender fluid people.

I mean if someone is non-binary, being called he or she isn't exactly true. And while being gender fluid myself, I'm 'old' so I'm good with 'she' even when I'd rather be 'he'. But I also am one of the types that doesn't care about a lot of it really, I'd rather not have a label at all, full stop. But society doesn't allow for that, and you're 'weird' if you DO want to be just yourself without the labels. I've a trans friend in Calgary who feels the same; because the 'community' overall wants to put them into a box, and there isn't a 'box' for them, they don't really associate much.

In the end, the best community/group support they found was the two spirit native community; since they're native themselves, it's done a lot to help them mentally.

Ah, so that's what my problem is. Thank you for bringing it to my attention ;). Who says old farts can't learn something new LOL! I appreciate the heads up as I didn't realize I was "a far right extremist" - huh who knew??

I'm pretty conventional, for the most part, and consider myself just right of center on some issues and center/slightly left of center on others depending on the issues. It's incredible how people determine what you are without knowing who you are isn't it?
Yes , one must bow down to the gods of liberalism .

The more those loony f'n leftist liberals and socialists attack and mock me or you the more I enjoy fighting back. I won't let those useless pos try and make a fool of me. They are the fools and I will treat them as fools. Those lying bastard liberal and socialists have created so many problems in Canada that we cannot now be sure as to whether we can ever get Canada back to a more conservative minded common sense and logical country. You have one friend here, Dixie. Hang in there and fight back. Don't let them get the best of you. (y)

I didn't say using the wrong gender pronoun would send you to jail. But it is defined as hate speech/hate incitement under Canadian law.
Bill C-16 added the words "gender identity and expression" in three instances. These words were added to the Canadian Human Rights Act as prohibited grounds for discrimination, and to the Criminal Code in two sections, the first dealing with hate speech and hate incitement and the second regarding sentencing for hate crimes.

It's obvious by the contentiousness of your response that you're aggressively defensive about this topic. Far be it from me or anyone else to "expect or tell you how to be". If "people" don't want others to be assholes about alternate points of view, it only stands to reason that those "people" should extend the same courtesy in return.

Good, cause it shouldn't be used to discriminate.

and to the Criminal Code in two sections, the first dealing with hate speech and hate incitement and the second regarding sentencing for hate crimes.

That it's in the criminal code as you suggest would at least mean that it IS something you can be charged with and go to jail for?

Think you're confused; which is it? You can go to jail or you can't?

Or is it just a suspended sentence and monetary fines?

It's obvious by the contentiousness of your response that you're aggressively defensive about this topic.

Yes, because I don't agree that you should be discriminated against for being who you are, especially if it's not something you can honestly not control. And I'm tired of hearing about people - including kids - who are bullied and/or are dying because some people won't just stop being assholes.

Far be it from me or anyone else to "expect or tell you how to be".

And yet, it happens, so...

If "people" don't want others to be assholes about alternate points of view, it only stands to reason that those "people" should extend the same courtesy in return.

Sure, totally agree.

Alternate points of view are one thing though; abject denial/refusal to even consider that you could be wrong is another thing all together, especially if there's evidence to back up a claim.

In this case, you want to call someone by the wrong pronoun or misgender them, that's on you. But you DON'T get to bitch or complain after when that person gets pissed if they asked you not to do those things, and you continue to do them.

As for having different opinions; Ron and I have different views on a lot of things. That said I don't go aggro on him at all compared to some on here, because I honestly respect him at least even if we don't agree sometimes. At least in that regard, the respect, at least to me, feels mutual. Many others on here don't have that 'respect' and if you don't agree with them well you're a 'commie' or a whatever other rage-word of the day they want to use. Why should I respect people like that?

Blah blah blah. You sure know how to cut up a post.

I couldn't care less about Ron n' you. I'm not Ron. Conflating what I said to what "some on here" say is a strawman and is inane. I've tried no to be disrespectful so your argument seems to be misdirected. If you're just here to whine about how people treat you bad, I'm moving on, I'm not the HR department here. And as for going all "agrgo"...respectfully you seem a bit "aggro" yourself. Might be a good idea to take a deep breath, maybe take a break from things that get you so worked up.

Read the bill for yourself.

I did. Even did so again to refresh what I read years ago.

Funny thing, it doesn't mention pronouns at all.

Apparently asking you to clarify your own statements though is too hard for you.
Blah blah blah. You sure know how to cut up a post.

I 'cut up a post' to actually give what a person says consideration and thought. If you make a valid point, I agree, if not, I explain why.

Never used to do any of it, but got tired of too many assholes discrediting anything I said because I "Missed" something they said.

I couldn't care less about Ron n' you. I'm not Ron. Conflating what I said to what "some on here" say is a strawman and is inane.

No, it's an attempt to show that your comment about 'different views' wasn't exactly valid, though I do kind of agree with you on the original point.

I've tried no to be disrespectful so your argument seems to be misdirected.

I never said you were disrespectful and honestly until now this is the most discussion that's been had. Really I am normally indifferent to you and your posts. Again, the point was to say that your comment about respect going both ways, in my personal case, happens when there's actual respect both ways. When there isn't, why should I waste my time? Since you brought it up, I assumed your were being critical about my lack of 'respect' or some such?

If you're just here to whine about how people treat you bad,

Talk about misdirection... not sure where that came up or why you're bringing it up but... whatever.

I'm moving on, I'm not the HR department here.

Oh well, okay then.

And as for going all "agrgo"...respectfully you seem a bit "aggro" yourself.

Depends on the person, yeah, I tend to 'aggro', mainly because I really hate blind ignorance and stupidity and there are a few here who don't just practice that, they lay and wallow in it like a pig in shit and are just as happy about it. As for this topic, I explained why this matters so much.

Might be a good idea to take a deep breath, maybe take a break from things that get you so worked up.

If I was worked up, maybe you'd have a point. As is, again, I'm pretty indifferent to you normally so there's no reason to be worked up.
