PORTLAND, Maine — A group of parents raffling off a gun to support a Maine high school graduation celebration is receiving backlash online.
WGME-TV reports the group is raffling off a 9mm handgun that a parent donated to raise money for Project Graduation at Hodgdon High School. Sporting goods store owner and parent Michelle Crane promoted the raffle on her Facebook page last month.
Crane says all laws apply in the raffle and that the winner must pass a background check. She says the group has raffled off guns before.
Some Facebook users say the raffle is insensitive to the families of students killed in recent school shootings in Florida and Maryland.
Principal Mary Harbison says she doesn’t supervise Project Graduation so she won’t weigh in on the issue.

SCHOOL OF ROCKS: District arms teachers with buckets of rocks in case of school shooter

A rural school district in Pennsylvania is arming teachers and students with buckets of rocks as a last resort should an armed intruder burst in, the superintendent said Friday.
Every classroom in the district about 90 miles (145 kilometres) northwest of Philadelphia has a 5-gallon bucket of river stones, said Blue Mountain School District Superintendent David Helsel.
“We always strive to find new ways to keep our students safe,” Helsel told The Associated Press in a telephone interview, adding that the rocks are one small part of the district’s overall security plan.
Throwing rocks is more effective than just crawling under desks and waiting, and it gives students and teachers a chance to defend themselves, he said. The district has about 2,700 students at three elementary schools, a middle school and a high school.
Staff and students in the Blue Mountain district have been trained in a program called “ALICE” which stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate. Helsel said the rocks are part of the “counter” portion of training, fighting back if the intruder makes his way into the classroom.
The buckets are kept in classroom closets.
Kenneth Trump, president of the Cleveland-based National School Safety and Security Services, a K-12 security consulting firm, calls the idea illogical and irrational and said it could possibly cost lives.
He said the efforts fill an emotional security need, but don’t actually enhance security.
One high school senior said he supports the plan, adding that throwing rocks is better than throwing books or pencils.
Parents also have been supportive of the measure, which was implemented in the fall.
“At this point, we have to get creative, we have to protect our kids first and foremost,” parent Dori Bornstein told WNEP-TV. “Throwing rocks, it’s an option.”

The anti-gun movement has always ignored mental health and insisted a piece of steel is to blame. They love to hear their own voice.

I could take the high road, but Cliffy will continue his hateful, negativity. Perhaps if he is on the receiving end, he will learn something. Sadly, he is determined to be an ass.

First, WRT the child and his father in Walmart buying a handgun. The child was under the supervision of his dad. That means the child can hold and look at the handgun.

1. ...Furthermore, the minor may only be in possession of a weapon only while engaged in sporting, hunting, and recreational activities that are considered as legal, and under the supervision of a parent, legal guardian, or certified or qualified instructor.

WRT the waiting period, it is three days for a handgun. You cannot buy one and leave with it.

2. "A licensed firearms dealer must also obtain a completed form from the prospective buyer of a firearm and receive approval for the transfer of a firearm by the Department of Law Enforcement, pending a background check of the individual.

It is considered illegal for a licensed firearms dealer to deliver a weapon to a buyer without having completed the aforementioned process. Those that are not subject to the background check include other licensed dealers, law enforcement and military personnel, and individuals that have already obtained a permit to carry concealed weapons. There is a three day waiting period to purchase a handgun from any licensed firearms dealer.

The mentally ill cannot buy or own firearms. A doctor makes this determination. State law prohibits ownership or sales to those deemed to be mentally ill.

WRT the mentally ill buying firearms, if the state or a doctor has someone committed, they cannot purchase firearms. People who check themselves in voluntarily, may be able to buy a firearm. So your patient who left the hospital and purchased a firearm must have voluntarily gone to the hospital, or the sale was illegal.

From the ref:

"According to state law, while people institutionalized against their will, commonly known as the Baker Act, are prohibited from purchasing firearms, those who voluntarily commit themselves and stay on a voluntary status can obtain guns. In addition, if a doctor determines a person's "dangerousness" is not imminent, Florida laws says they can buy guns."

So I suggest that next time, you should check and provide facts for your assertions.
lol You and I kow that any gun law to be effective it needs to be enforced, Now the Parkland shooter had turned 18, just, had been in and out of mental institutons several times times, had been reported to police and FBI to be a danger. He still managed to shoot and kill 17 peple . Then he managed to leave his gun behind and walk out past the ,supposedly trained deputies. They only picked him up and hour later when the students told authorities who did the shooting.

So you try to point out all the laws you like but if the law does not work the schools, religious, any place where people gather will be continue to be targets for anyone with a grudge. So continue to argue with me and anyone who wants to be free from harm while going about their daily lives, BUT THIS TIME the students and their families who want the change will vote for those who they feel will enact it.

I pointed out the laws to show you that your understanding of them was wrong. Don't try to turn it around.

There are sufficient laws in place. If they are not enforced, making more will not help. It's just a nonsensical dose of feel good, as is the children's march. The children will chase after the next big thing shortly.

i just gave a thumbs up for the stupidest reply you could think of. THIS time the protests are not going away.

i watched a young student questioning a politician a couple of days ago about how much he took from the NRA for his campaign. that politician tried to deflect the question in every manner he could but that young man would not let go. There was nothing wrong with my understanding of the laws here after all i have spent 5 plus months here since 1989.

Up until a few tears ago, new years eve was deadly here. Firing weapons into the air was the thing to do here.

After a few nasty accidents, that got a bit more attention. i.e. one chiid killed it's crib and a woman who was unfortunate enough to go blind when a spent bullet took out both corneas and part of her nose. So I do understand the laws here and how they have failled. I DO KNOW OF WHAT I SPEAK. So suck it up.

Yup so guess who will not get elected1 Sheer.
