Its blast area is limited by the size of conventional explosive you use. It is not a nuclear bomb, just spreads previously contaminated radioactive material around.

Remember during the British wars with India, rumors were spread that bullet's were smeared with pig fat. Pig was a forbidden/still is forbidden to be eaten by some religions. Same thing with the DU shells. Just a rumor.
