He made a mistake....got a little flustered...BIG DEAL!!

Doesn't mean a thing to me..... Dion is a very bright man, and a pretty good guy, it seems. I get really tired of this kind of "gotya" politics.....he is, after all, human. This does not indicate a thing except that he is human.

It is simply that he is wrong, wrong, wrong on so many things.

*Wolf noogies Colpy's palate* Big of you, man....

Im going to side with Dion on this one, and I dislike Dion:

The interviewer doesn't know what the hell he's asking:

If you were prime minister now, what would you have done about the economy about this economy" blah blah.

Then when Dion asks "When did I start, 2 years ago"

"No, right now"

Then ya, I'd be confused too: If I started RIGHT NOW, how could I have done anything previously to avoided an event thats already occurred.

He goes again, "If you started today", what would you "have already done"

YOU CAN'T HAVE ALREADY DONE ANYTHING IF YOU JUST START TODAY.

That interviewer is retarded.

8O........I know several people whose mother tongue is English, and they can speak fluent French.

But; they couldn't argue/debate in French, as any small nuance would probably be missed, and they would look like Dionne, in reverse.

Gotta cut him some slack here, I do think.

I'd rather have someone trip over their question in their second language than someone who thinks this looks even remotely acceptable attire.

Ol' Stevie should know by now that the petty political game of trying to take advantage of embarrassing gaffes doesn't work in this country, it just makes you look like a snarky a-hole.

Since we've seen this picture of Dion so, so many times (I got a Conservative ad - from someone not even in my riding, or even my province - that had this picture no fewer than 9 times on a folded 8.5x11" piece of paper).

It's cute to laugh at, but really, like the comment, it's not something worth making a central point of the election over; and really, if that's the best Harper has right now as his campaign circles the crapper, then all the best of luck to 'em.

Hey Nugg,

You,re right.
Reverse it again and you see the same occurring in discussions/ debates on French television. Commentators/opponents often ask for a re-phrasing because of the little nuances.

What melt down, are you dreaming Walter? At the end there will be a coalition and Harper will end up either with a minority or may be out of the picture for the top job……………..
Harper is not fit to run this country…. He is a liar, a manipulator, a one man show, and a closet bigot to boot……Black boot Gestapo style Government. Only 4 days left Walter………The Cons are going down………Smile…………

Hey LW good day to you……..free speech is OK as long as we don’t threaten any ones well being………….I am bland some times with venom, we all are at times, some people think venom to them self’s in silence, others write it, and others go on Radio to put in their 5 cents in the open……..
A human being with the emotional set-up we all possess is not exempt from this reality, the reality of getting aggravated when we are forced to except lies for the truth……………………..
I am polite to people, but when I see a jerk manipulating the stage for a stupid self serving agenda, It makes my blood boil………………………………I am a bigot in your eyes maybe by calling Harper polite names (ha hah)
As for me being a bigot, I like gays, I am pro-choice, my neighbors like me, you may be correct though, I am a political bigot like every one else……. When I drink with my friends I don’t disturb the peace of others by making movie clips of my self calling gays “fagots’ with dirt under their finger nails” I don’t do none of that……or cut brake lines on cars because I don’t agree with my neighbors when they disagree with me politically, I don’t do none of that…. I have apologized many times here for being bland, but emotions rise when a weasel politician like Harper wants to lie and cheat……and tell the masses that he is transparent…….I am not a bigot towards ordinary people…………I will be a bigot to any one who wants’ to push my vote a side and play stupid games with creative accounting….. and make pay for the extra……. Other wise no LW I am not a bigot……As for the miss spelling for Gestapo I never told any one here that I am degree holder of Literary arts or a grammatical export, I am like DION who speaks the truth in two Languages

Craig's List: For the Liberal leader, the damage is done

Updated Fri. Oct. 10 2008 2:25 PM ET
Craig Oliver, Chief Political Correspondent
In all of the fog of rhetoric and rancour surrounding the thrice-ceased interview with Liberal Leader Stephane Dion, there is one hard reality -- The time has long since passed when anyone aspiring to be a national leader of Canada can be anything less than completely comfortable in both French and English.
To anyone with any comfort zone in English, the questions with having to do with what Mr. Dion would do about the economic crisis if he were prime minister were indelibly clear.
Dion, who has been demanding the Conservative government detail its plans for protecting Canada from the marauding wolves of recession and worse seemed unable to lay out his own ideas of what is needed in this urgent crisis.
However, let's accept Mr. Dion at his word -- that the problem was a difficulty he has with comprehension as a result of some hearing issue. It is a painful thing to say but is he then fit for the highest office in the land if he cannot follow a detailed conversation in English in which great decisions may have to be made? Ottawa is officially a bilingual capital but English is still used extensively by federal bureaucrats and cabinet ministers and their staff.
My impression was that it was an issue of comprehension and not any lack of intelligence or judgment. But the problem is worthy of discussion.
For the Liberal leader, the damage is done. Whatever issues, causes or victims may arise. He was given three chances to understand the question and reply by a patient careful reporter, Steve Murphy, well-admired by his colleagues on all sides of the fence.
Does anyone believe for a minute that had the situation been reversed, and Mr. Harper forced to stop and start and appear to fumble his way through an interview three times in a French studio that the tape would not be shown to the public?
Whatever the reasons and the justifications, and they will be debated a long time, the result has hurt Mr. Dion. The images of a stammering, somewhat confused leader trying to get his head around a question, is out there, and it buttressed in early Conservative propaganda of Dion as an indecisive and wooly politician.

Your data is from June 14, it's a little dated. Try this more up-to-date data.

Hey this only a projection, the wheels on the Conservative wagon will come off on October the 14th. Reality shows that Harper will sink Canada, the Canadian voter is well informed when they look at the mess the Bush Conservatives put the American people in and Harper is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo very vulnerable…………… because of that. Hey after all the bone of contention here is not who can speak clear English, The bone of contention here is about the stability of the Canadian economy……..Bush would rather start wars, then feed the poverty that is facing the American people. Harper is on record lying for Bush to the Canadian people… Do you want more??????? Harper will do what Mulroney did to the Canadian economy, SINK it….Deficit after deficit after deficit…………………..Canadians don’t want that sh!t Walter………… Harper is going down……

Did you misspell gestapo? Lets not try to tip toe around it ... again. Bland is hardly the word I would use to describe the stuff you spout.

CTV aired this as a "service" to viewers. I'm not quite sure what service it did, I saw a man having trouble understanding a question. :-| It doesn't change my oppinion on Dion.

Gotta agree with Colpy on this one. Gimme a break, who cares..... it's refreshing to Harper's "I am robot....I have no emotion.....blah....". Besides, we may have not seen some hidden gems of Harper melting down.....

We do know he doesn't realize there are differences between economy and bank or between taxpayer and investor....

In response to the original post from his interview here in Nova Scotia on ATV (CTV branch for the maritimes) with Steve Murphy. I watched this through, both in what was said and body language.

He knew exactly what the hell was being said.... he was nodding his head through the whole thing right until the question was finished.

It was as clear english as I have ever heard, they were feet away from each other so there wasn't an issue of his poor hearing complex excuse..... it was as simple as What would you do about the financial issues if you were currently Prime Minister?

How hard of a damn question was that?

They clearly explained to him that if he was Prime Minister "TODAY" what would he do that Harper hasn't done..... and he runs around and around about what day is he talking about....... a week, a month, a year from now?

No you twit, TODAY! At this very moment!

If the decision was his to make right now, what would he do?

He didn't have an answer. This isn't a question about if he understood the question or not..... he did. Plain and simple.

What the hell's the translation for Today in french?

aujourd'hui

I don't think Today has very many more meanings in french translation. It cetainly doesn't mean tomorrow, a week or a month from now..... it means Today.

Yeah everybody screws up in interviews once in a while..... but this was a simple damn question and if he can't understand plain english, then how the hell is he going to be able to operate as Prime Minister in a country that is majority English? Three times the question was asked of him and he seemed to avoid the part of "Today" and started picking out other dates from the sky.

How is he going to handle himself when he has to deal with other nations such as the UK or the US? When he has people angry in some dispute in the future and they're angry and talking fast about their concerns..... is he gonna be left behind in the dust with his thumb up his arse?

Dion was talking pretty decently with Murphy and everybody else in English and having a full conversation..... but the question presented to him was confusing?

Give me a break.

Added:

And I'm taking this view based directly on what was provided in the interview, not by anybody else's comments or opinions. Last I heard, the Liberals arn't doing too well in the Maritimes and when you have Harper screwing us over through many things such as the offshore deals, and Dion planning on screwing us over with the Carbon Tax.... everything counts, regardless of how trivial some may think it is.

This is where Democracy started in North America..... sorry, but I can't help it if we're more critical then others when it comes to our voting.

Harper/Dion..... One's a Corrupt two face con artist and the other is a blaitent idiot who can't answer a straight question with a straight answer.
