So convictions based on surveillance cameras should be tossed? Or just traffic violations?

Surveillance cameras convict a "person" in the act of a crime.

Traffic cameras, convict the owner of the car.. not the "person" committing the crime.

As I said if it took the photo of the front plate plus the driver.. fine. But Alberta does not have a front plate, so the camera "assumes" the owner of the car is the driver and thus punishes the owner.. under an assumption of guilt.

You can seek the fine from anyone else driving. Its actually holding the owner responsible for what the vehicle does, not 'convicting you of a crime'. Thus the absence of demerits or insurance ramifications.

You yourself said you slow down because of them...they serve a purpose

If your LINK is to one of those clear plastic covers or bubbles....you might get stopped &
fined for having that on your car...speeding or not. Obstructing your plate. Yeah, I know
it's clear.....check it out before you spend your $$$ only to be forced to spend more $$$.

Nap time is over and so are your dreams of beating this. LOL

Photos/video are the witness, the municipality the plaintiff, your tags in the photo identify you are the owner of the vehicle which your insurance policy says you are the one who signed the liability agreement (defendant) to take responsibility no matter who is driving. If somebody else committed the violation, driving your vehicle which you agreed to be liable for you get the ticket.

There are no loopholes.

If you look closely at your back plate, you'll see the RFID tag (in Sask it is behind the wheat stalks). When scanned by cops your driver's license pic pops up on the cop car computer as does your criminal record if you have one, any outstanding warrants and any driving restrictions you may have. They know everything about you, even what you look like before they get out of their car when they pull you over without having to radio dispatch.

The scanner in the cop cars can read multiple tags at once. Watch a cop sometime while sitting at a red light, he'll be looking at his on-board computer checking the details of everyone stopped at the light.

I've been pulled over in the US (Texas) for not having a front plate and had to explain all this to them. State troopers aren't exactly friendly to people from out of state let alone Canadian drivers.

Welcome to the digital age.

That's why it good to read the fine print before signing ANY contract.

Ah f**k, I'm getting so I have trouble reading the big print! -:)

Isn't it illegal to have those? Wouldn't the fines end up being higher than they would for just a speeding ticket?

Also, for a post above, aren't people permitted to use a cellphone while driving if it's used to call emergency personnel?

You can still pull off onto the shoulder and park first, stupid to cause another accident while reporting one. Actually that would be even more dangerous than normal phone conversation, because you have to be more attentive to the call and are likely upset to begin with.

Lol, i wont drive a vehicle with anything that can get me ticketed for driving it. Obscuring your license plate can earn you a hefty fine

Btw boomer, ive had one speeding ticket in my entire time driving (it was due to a ploice blitz to drive home a change in speed limit near my parents house and i got dinged going 10 over, which the cops dropped down so i had to pay something like a 50 dollar fine) and no accidents, not even a scratch, driving everything from my 3/4 ton long box, to my mazda 3, from one end of the province to the other.

Yes they will. Furthermore if you don't pay it and the tax collectors(RCMP) see your car in Alberta they will impound it.

Actually no they won't.. my neighbor from Plano, Texas works for the city.. he still has his Texas tags on his Ford F150..

He has a heavy foot, all the time and sees the flash many a time. The truck is registered to his parents home, so he gets mail and registration information on his truck.

Lot's of US Citizens working in the Oil Patch and other sectors continue to driver their US cars, with US tags.
