Chavez capped off that little piece of culture by stating: "I wish I had met the man while he was still alive !"

elevennevele I have to agree with you on your views about Bush. The man is an absolute idiot. Don't even start me on the Geneva Convention B.S. he's trying to ramrod through to cover his own ass (in my opinion). I'd say (on the high side I admit) 75% of the American people (not voters) agree with you also. Unfortunately they don't get out of their comfortable homes on Election Day and vote him out. Sad but true.

Chavez calls Bush the devil.
Naw, Bush isn't smart enough or mean enough for that, he's at best just a minor functionary in Hell's bureaucracy, maybe at the first line manager level, but certainly not the head honcho. I think Bush is probably a very nice but not very bright man who really has no idea what's going on around him. Dick Cheney, now, or Paul Wolfowitz, those guys might be fairly high up in Hell's organization structure.

Other than that though, I'm inclined to think Chavez has a pretty clear view of what the U.S. is really up to. It's not about freedom, or peace, or democracy, or terrorism, it's not even really about oil. It's about who's in charge, and making the world secure for American business interests.

Hmm... I've just had a PM from feronia that leads me to suspect I may be underestimating Bush. Since it was a PM I'm not going to reproduce it here for everybody, but it implicitly raised the possibility that Bush's public persona may be carefully calculated to create exactly the impression I have of him, and he may be far brighter and more devious than I can perceive from what he says and does in public.

Feronia, I think you should post here what you told me. It's useful information and would add much to the discussion.

RE: Chavez: World faces choice between U.S. hegemony or surv

I don't get this Chavez guy anymore.

If I'm not mistaken, Venezuela's per capita income is lower than that of the US. If so, then why is Chavez giving the US its oil as charity?

Now if his concern is truly for the poor of North America, then he could simply open up Venezuela's doors to immigration, while selling the oil on the world market at world market price and using the money earned to help the poor either in Venezuela or in Countries POORER that it, not the US and Canada!

I mean we can appreciate the offer, but I generally don't give my money away in charity to peopel with more of it than I do. Common sense! What is he thinking? Politics I suppose?

Chavez has pretty much destroyed what used to be a thriving middle class economy in Venezuela and the poverty is on the increase since he began his megalomania.

His intent is to ride on the old mentality of "enslavement of Blacks" which will always remain a stain on the historical record of the U.S., and thus giving directly to the poor Black (who is not being helped by its own prosperous country) - his point not reality - is a slap directly at not only the government of the U.S. and George Bush, but of the State of New York - his host during his short but inflammatory visit.

He may not realize but today there is a partisanship not seen in months down here where both large parties Democrat and Republican are up in arms against his disgusting and insane behavior at the United Nations. It also revealed what the U.N. believes - and has been a revealing epiphany for many people in politics.

The U.N. is no longer bound in diplomacy but for personal gain. They have lost their way - we can also thank Chavez for bringing it out on television for the country to witness. The U.N. generally hide behind weak translation, bows, hand-shaking, smiles and courtesy. Not yesterday - the ugly face of the U.N. became a national drama better than fiction.

This mess may seek to benefit the U.S. in ways Chavez never dreamed of...and to his detriment, the poor of his own land are not going to receive this news of his with much affection....giving their money to the "poor" of the richest land in the world.

RE: Chavez: World faces c

Same as why Venezuela offered aid when hurricane Katrina hit (I believe it was rejected summarily, too) they didn't have to, it's altruism.. I mean.. Politics.. but ya gotta admit, the guy is fun to watch, and he actuallly says stuff, listening to Dubya "speak" is maddening, he has said the exact same unconvincing "We were attacked that day.. 9-11" BS for five years, and it wasn't even any good the first time. Despite whatever politics may be involved, Chavez is a good speaker and actually delivers content. I would think that despite anyones bias, they would have to agree with that fact.

And IS Dubya stupid?? Hard to say, but there would be a pretty large value in him coming off as dumb as he does. Until I realized that, I thought he was dumb like a bag of hammers, but the more I think about it, the less likely that seems, having Bush thought of as a likeable dolt is handy in a number of ways- one, really stupid people will identify with him, two- if stuff goes wrong, he can "earnestly" use the "aww shucks" defense and Three, any attack on him by folks with greater intelligence can be portrayed as bullies picking on those weaker than themselves....

You are discussing linguistics here not intellect.

Bush is terribly inarticulate - does this mark his intelligence? I wonder.

Do you speak Portugese or Spanish? Did you actually comprehend what
Chavez spoke? I envy bilingual people.

All monies offered for Katrina were received gratefully from all nations which offered them.

Chavez is so out of touch with the U.S. he thinks pandering to the Black people (New York and New Orleans) will divide the country. The people have far more going these days than that old crap which out of touch
racists or people who live elsewhere love to bring out of the memory box and write about.

I'll take clumsy and unsophisticated any day along with the dreaded "nucular"....than the slick and sly WillieBubba with his avoidance behavior and lies. He turned me off what his party stands for and they are still wandering around looking for a good and honest leader.

But we all have our personal opinions eh? I know very little about Canadian politics these days too. It's a shame we don't get more Canadian news here - it should be a shared thing - rather than "protected" and fed to us under the auspices of Mother CBC, fully strained through the filters.

Didn't Bush go to Harvard, if so he's hardly stupid. Bush speaks with a Texas drawl, why should he have to talk like an up-tight over enunciated prig?

RE: Chavez: World faces c

it's odd how he has a souther drawl, given his upbringing and all

WC- I can speak a tiny bit of Japanese, and am pretty good with French. which makes Spanish a semi-familiar language to me as well, I don't fully understand your attmept to discredit my opinion but I imagine it's just a misunderstanding...

And it's NOT the drawl that Dubya effects that is the problem- it's the absolute nonsensical stuff that he says WITH the drawl... and it is pointless to bring up the "everybody makes mistakes" excuse, some of the things he's let slip were bordering on insane, and some of them merely idiotic, and when someone says stuff like "Sovereignty..... sovereignty, see, is a relationship between tribes that are sovereign" as a DEFINITION of a word that is at the heart of foreign policy, they are not just making a slip-up, that person is a damn buffoon, and all's I was saying was that I don't believe he's a stupid as he is CLEARLY made out to be, is all

Sorry about that misunderstanding - the translations at the U.N. are "iffy" at best and unless one spoke the natal language Chavez was using (I take it - he was speaking Spanish as you write) - how could one comprehend exactly what the man was saying?

I was not questioning your opinion - only asking if you spoke his language because unless one catches the "nuances" in an inflammatory rhetorical speech such as Chavez gave - one could easily misinterpret his meanings.

Even in clumsy English we can say something and have it misunderstood as demonstrated by your questioning whether I was insulting you or not....

Anyone who is fluent...I mean fluent..... not everyday exchanges of politeness....in more than one language.... I envy mightily....

RE: Chavez: World faces choice between U.S. hegemony or surv

I say that the U.S. pulls all of its' soldiers out of every stinking country they are in now, war torn and peaceful ones as well, CLOSE our borders, especially the one up north, prevent anyone else from partaking in the resources our country has been providing. And let the rest of the world try to get along without us.

I am so sick of these weak, spineless, pathetic little punks crying that the U.S. is trying to "take over the world"!! Ya'll sound like chicken little.."THe sky is falling"!!! 8O 8O

I am really surprised to see so many Canadians talking smack. You keep wanting to bring up wars from a BILLION years ago, and that your military today is the strongest! HUH??????? LOL at you!!

Like I said, let the U.S. close off its' borders and then when the crazy Muslims come for ya'll, let's see how long it takes ya'll to cry fr us. WHo's gonna protect you...THE CANADIAN ROYAL MOUNT??!!! LOL!!!!!

You don't have to like our President, HELL I don't like him
and I didn't vote for him either!! But all these personal insults against AMerican people need to stop! :x

We are "unintelligent", lazy, fat, loud, egotistical..blah blah blah" Come on, you all sound as close minded as you are TRYING to say we are.....

ANd I haven't seen at least a hundred dozen loud and fat Canadians "beached" on our shores every year..not just Canadian either..Brits...Asians....Arabs....I could go on and on....Fat, rude, unintelligent, loud people come from EVERY country..who do you all think you are to stick your noses up at us. The smartest Canadian there got it right when he said, the more ignorant Canadians continue to bash the U.S., the more they will be knawing off their own feet......AND NO ONE in the U.S., intelligent or not will want to hear anything coming from a Canadian again, even if we agree with you.

I never had a problem with Canada before, but now to see how much of turncoats and backstabbers you are, I am most definitely disappointed.... :(

Speaking of stupid leaders, I noticed that Chavez said one of his biggest regrets was not getting to meet the object of his fanatical nut-hugging, Noam Chomsky, before he died.

Which probably came as quite a shock to Mr. Chomsky as he is alive and kicking at age 77....So, who's the not so bright leader?

If you did not say anything then why respond? If you stand with us that is wonderful, even if you do not that is still fine..it is a matter of respect and getting one's facts straight.

The same way you are now offended because I "generalized" Canadians, is the exact same way I feel when I read things like.."Americans are stupid" or "Americans are rude" or "Americans are devils", when I myself happen to be a college graduate who runs her own business, who trys at all times to be open minded and most definitely a Christian..... See how that feels?......YOu don't make a generalization on an entire nation of people based on ignorant rantings from a few....period....
