BLM protesters rally for ‘victim,’ leave after learning he was white

By Lee Brown
April 19, 2021 | 11:59am | Updated

Black Lives Matter protesters in Minnesota dropped to a knee and set off to march over a fatal police shooting — only to return when they learned it was a white carjacker who had fired at police, according to reports.
Dozens of people protesting outside Gov. Tim Walz’s mansion in St. Paul on Sunday were filmed by Fox 9 reporter Mitti Hicks as they knelt for a moment of silence over initial rumors about Sunday’s 3 p.m. fatal shooting.
“Protestors kneel after hearing there was an officer-involved shooting in Burnsville moments ago,” Hicks tweeted of the wild, caught-on-camera armed carjacking in the suburbs.
“This information HAS NOT been confirmed but this group says they’re heading there,” Hicks said.
The man who was killed is believed to be a white man in his 20s who had stolen a car from a woman at gunpoint — then repeatedly shot at cops as they chased him, Burnsville police said.

Traffic camera footage shared by KARE11 showed the suspect leaping out of the still-moving stolen car, then running into the road and seemingly pointing his gun at an approaching SUV before he was shot by “multiple” pursuing officers, police said.
The BLM marchers, riled by the local police-involved deaths of George Floyd and Daunte Wright, soon appeared to get word that the latest shooting was not one fit for protest.

The protesters turned back and instead headed to Brooklyn Center — the city where Wright died — “because they need more information about what happened in Burnsville first,” Hicks said in an update about an hour after her initial video.
Word of their planned protest after a rush to judgment quickly had the protesters ripped online.
“For an armed carjacker?????? Are people this stupid????” one person replied to Hicks’ video, while Amanda Felske said that the group planned to “just immediate loot /riot!!” without getting the facts.

Brendan Hartmann, meanwhile, pointed out that the latest suspect had been shooting at police.
Are they kneeling for the amazing work these officers did to keep the community safe from a mad man with a GUN,” he asked of the protest group.
The Burnsville carjacker has yet to be identified. No police were injured and there were no reports of any of the suspect’s victims being wounded, either.
“All Burnsville Police Officers wear body cameras and camera data will be handled by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) who will lead the investigation,” the force said.

After taking to social media to assure fans she’s “totally fine” and “extremely happy” over the weekend, Britney Spears has divided the Britney Army with an Instagram post in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Along with the caption, “Just sayin'” and the hashtags #BlackLivesMatter and #BLM, the pop star shared an image of a Black man on a bus holding a sign reading, “White people have generational wealth. Black people have generational trauma.”

Some fans praised “woke Britney” for “COMING THROUGH WITH THE HARD HITTING TRUTH,” with one fan remarking, “I didn’t think I could love you more!!! … Britney for president,” while another thanked the singer for “using your platform to support and spread some light and truth.”

But Spears found herself a target of many critics following her post, with several saying the image proves she’s being “controlled.”

“If people didn’t believe you were being controlled, they sure do now,” one follower replied, while another added, “Britney didn’t post this y’all.”

Others accused Spears of perpetuating racism, with one person writing, “So tired of rich white people trying to shame everyone else for something none of us did.”

“Stating that all of one race is one way is the definition of racism,” another poster wrote.

Elsewhere, some fans jumped on the “generational wealth” portion of the image, saying that doesn’t apply to all white people.

“Where do I collect my generational wealth?” one asked. “I’ve been homeless 5 times, lost jobs due to COVID, been abused numerous times, lost EVERYTHING and been harassed by all types of races and officers because I was sleeping on the streets with nowhere to go. So do I have trauma, or no?”

Others replied that if Spears was serious, she should consider donating to the causes she posts about.

“Are you giving away your fortune, Britney?” one person wrote, with another encouraging the Grammy winner to “donate all your millions to BLM!”

But Spears was unmoved by the drama, returning to social media after the divisive post to share video montage of her modelling various outfits set to BLACKPINK’s How You Like That.

“I’m bored!!!” she wrote. “Here’s to fashion.”

Police in Columbus, Ohio, shot and killed a Black teenage girl on Tuesday after confronting her while responding to a report of an attempted stabbing, according to authorities and the youngster’s family.

The shooting in a neighborhood on the city’s southeast side happened to coincide with announcement of the guilty verdict by a Minneapolis jury against a former police officer charged with murdering George Floyd by kneeling on his neck during an arrest last year.

Releasing police body-camera video of Tuesday’s shooting in Ohio’s capital hours later, the interim Columbus police chief, Michael Woods, said officers involved there were answering an emergency-911 call from someone who reported an attempted stabbing.

Police arriving at the home encountered a chaotic scene of several people on the front lawn of a dwelling where the female youth, seen brandishing what appeared to be knife, was charging toward another female who fell backwards, the video showed.

A police officer then opened fire on the youth as she collapsed against a car parked in the driveway. The video then shows what appears to be a kitchen knife lying on pavement near the teenager.

Authorities described the youth who was fatally shot as a 15-year-old girl. But family members have identified her as Makiyah Bryant, aged 16.

The officer who opened fire was not identified. The chief said he “would be taken off the street” pending an investigation.

Around the time the video was made public, live television news coverage showed a growing crowd of protesters on city streets after dark, confronting a small line of police officers on bicycles.

The Columbus Dispatch reported that demonstrators had gathered near the scene of the shooting earlier in the day.

Woods said the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) had opened an inquiry into the case. He and the city’s public safety director, Ned Pettus, Jr., appealed for calm while the investigation proceeds and facts are uncovered in what he called “a devastating” loss of life.

“Fast, quick answers cannot come at the cost of accurate answers,” Pettus told a late news conference with the police chief and mayor. “BCI will conduct a fully independent investigation, which will be made public. If an officer has violated policy or the law, if they have, they will be held accountable.”

Mayor Andrew Ginther said it appeared from an initial review of the footage that the officer who opened fire “took action to protect another young girl in our community.”

“But another young girl will still not be coming home tonight, he said, adding, “I ask everyone to pray for peace. Tonight we pray for this family, we pray for this city, and we pray for our neighbors,” Ginther said.

North Carolina state officials have opened an investigation into the fatal shooting of a Black man in his car by local sheriff’s deputies serving him with a search warrant, authorities and local media reported on Wednesday.

The shooting unfolded on Wednesday morning in Elizabeth City, a riverfront town of about 18,000 residents in Pasquotank County near North Carolina’s coastal border with Virginia, and small groups of protesters took to the streets by evening.

The county sheriff’s office and the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), which said it had taken over the case, each provided few details of the fatal encounter.

Authorities identified the man who was slain as Andrew Brown Jr., a resident of Elizabeth City, and said only that he was shot when sheriff’s deputies tried to serve him with a search warrant at about 8:40 a.m.

Relatives described him to the Raleigh News & Observer and other media outlets as a 40-year-old father and an African American.

Law enforcement officials did not say whether Brown was armed at the time or whether he was considered a threat to the officers. The nature of the warrant was not disclosed.

The shooting came the day after a jury found Derek Chauvin, a white former Minneapolis police officer, guilty of murdering George Floyd last year by kneeling on his neck while he was handcuffed and under arrest.

Relatives of Brown told CNN and other media that he was near his home and in an automobile at the time of the shooting.

All the deputies at the scene wore police body cameras, and the deputy who fired the gun was placed on administrative leave, Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten told a news conference on Wednesday.

Wooten was accompanied by the local district attorney, R. Andrew Womble, who said he was looking for “accurate answers, not fast answers.”

As news of the shooting spread, local media showed scores of people gathering outside the town hall as the City Council held an emergency meeting on Wednesday night to discuss the case and a possible curfew. African Americans account for about half the town’s population.

No curfew was immediately issued, but that authority was given to Police Chief Eddie Buffaloe Jr., who told the council his goal was “to keep the peace.”

Comedian Eric Andre has accused police officers of racial profiling after he was subjected to a drug search at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Georgia.

The Lion King actor claims he was stopped by authorities inside the departure terminal as he prepared to board a flight to Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Andre documented the incident in a series of Twitter posts, in which he initially thought the officers were members of the Atlanta Police Department.

“I was just racially profiled by two plain clothes Atlanta PD police in @DELTA terminal T3 at the Atlanta airport,” he wrote.

“They stopped me on the way down the bridge to the plane for a ‘random’ search and asked they could search me for drugs (sic). I told them no. Be careful.”

He went on to update followers about the situation as he sought to identify the cops involved and draw the attention of Mayor Keisha Bottoms by tagging her in the tweet: “They let me go. I’m on the plane in the air. I’m fine now but I want this reported…”

Andre subsequently discovered the officers were from Clayton County Police Department, and pushed back after a spokesperson claimed it was a “consensual encounter,” during which the actor is said to have “voluntarily consented” to a search of his luggage, although authorities decided against doing so.

Firing back at the statement, the funnyman declared, “I did NOT volunteer to a search and I did not volunteer to talk. You guys flashed your badge and detained me with no probable cause except for racism. This is JIM CROW RACISM.”

He also posted the CCPD press release on Twitter and wrote, “This is sad and full of misinformation @KeishaBottoms please help me. @ClaytonCountyPD violated my rights”.

Andre has since been in touch with his lawyer about the incident, and has asked his Twitter followers for recommendations for local legal representation in Atlanta.

An unarmed Black man shot by a Virginia sheriff’s deputy while making a 911 call had been given a ride home less than an hour earlier by the same deputy after his car broke down, authorities said on Sunday.

Isaiah Brown, 32, was recovering from injuries after the same deputy from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office administered life-saving aid at the scene, Virginia State Police said. The officer mistook a telephone held by Brown for a gun, according to an attorney for Brown’s family.

It was among the latest in a series of law enforcement shootings of Black men in the United States, and it happened a day after white Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murdering George Floyd.

Authorities released the 911 call audio as well as the deputy’s body camera video late on Friday.

Virginia State Police are investigating the incident in Spotsylvania County, about 66 miles south of Washington, D.C., and their findings will be turned over to a special prosecutor, Fredericksburg Commonwealth’s Attorney LaBravia Jenkins, said state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

Brown was being treated at a local hospital for serious but non-life threatening injuries, Geller said.

State police said the deputy had driven Brown home after responding to a 911 call about a stranded motorist at about 2:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday. At 3:18 a.m. the same deputy responded to a second 911 call in which Brown was threatening to kill his brother, police said.

When the officer arrived, he saw Brown walking away from his home. “The sheriff’s deputy attempted to verbally engage Brown and it was during this encounter that the deputy discharged his service weapon,” state police said in a statement.

On the 911 call, the deputy is heard shouting “Drop the gun! Drop the gun now!” before opening fire. He is then heard administering aid: “I’m here for you man. The hospital is coming,” he tells Brown. “Where’s the gun at? Where’s the gun?!”

In a statement reported by CNN, David Haynes, an attorney for Brown’s family, said the officer made “multiple, basic policing errors,” and Brown’s shooting was completely avoidable.
