U.S. ambassador attack in Libya linked to Al-Qaeda group | World | News | National Post

An al-Qaeda-linked group likely planned and executed the attack on a U.S. consulate and a safe house in Benghazi, which killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans, according to U.S. government officials.

The officials said that there were indications that members of a militant faction calling itself Ansar al Sharia – which translates as Supporters of Islamic Law – may have been involved in organizing the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya’s second-largest city.

They also said some reporting from the region suggested that members of Al-Qaeda’s north Africa-based affiliate, known as Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, may have been involved.

“It bears the hallmarks of an organized attack” and appeared to be preplanned, one U.S. official said.

Kate's opinion:

Not enough information

The common theme about the US Embassy attacks are that they were based on an insult to Islam from a movie. I'm having some difficulty believing that.

Point a: Both attacks happened on September 11th.
Point b: It was a Tuesday
Point c: Al Qaeda flag at the Cairo embassy.
Point d: Libya and Egypt are volatile, but not hostile to the US.

I don't think anyone can claim the September 11th date as an unhappy coincidence. The entire world knows the significance of it. For two attacks to happen on that date seems a little too organized for two different mobs to spontaneously generate.

Muslims riot on Fridays. Friday is the day they go to the mosque and get inflamed over the insult of the week as dictated by their spiritual leaders. Danish cartoon riots...3 Feb 2006...a Friday. For these to have happened on a Tuesday means that the organization for them was separate from religion.

Al Qaeda flag at the Cairo embassy. Very inflammatory and reinforces a link outside of the political or religious leadership in Egypt. This doesn't implicate Al Qaeda though, there are other actors in the M.E. that would have no bones about implicating a vastly diminished Al Qaeda.

Libya, in general, has moved away from the dictatorship and away from religious fundamentalism. The Muslim Brotherhood lost the election in Libya. The majority of the populace supports the US. For the murders to have happened there go against the grain of the population. Egypt's gov't understands the importance to them of US support even if they are the Muslim Brotherhood. I can't speak to the general population as I don't know their feelings. I see these points as further proof that external factors contributed more to the events yesterday.

So, to me, the only question that remains is, what entity wants to diminish US influence on the Arab Street. There are only really three possible answers and one makes no sense: Iran, non-Iranian backed terrorists, and Israel. The last being the one that makes no sense.

The whole of U.S. foreign policy for at least the last two decades is based on the premise that, freed from the control of tyrants, Islamic societies will naturally gravitate to the Western model of the secular nation state.

And boy were we ever wrong.

Are there any other countries Canada can blow the **** out of and have the Yanks take the backlashes? After two runs through Libya it's time to move on.

Do NOT give me greens- Again DO NOT GIVE ME GREENS- they are an insult.

Hmmm - Find that upsetting. As do I with your posts that are hateful in the least and many consider racist.

Just no more Greens and we can keep the same complete disrespect for the others qualities, morals and personal character, which is always a work in progress but in your case stalled at hate and as yet has not moved beyond that. Would you agree?

And boy were we ever wrong.

A term my wife uses which I hate- Ya Think - You know well when she uses that type of statement - and not intended as a slight.

I don't think it does. If he did, he would apply his indignation equally.

But as he has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt now, his claims of wanting a better, more friendlier site, which he claimed, dishonestly, could be achieved by neg repping trolls and rule violators, was patently false.

To date he's managed to offer up no (Or a token few) neg reps to any of the trolls or rule violators that follow his ideological bent or attack those he sees as his detractors.

It's not at all surprising, given his long history of unethical behavior, and moral bankruptcy.

So you think it best that the Americans let him live? I suspect if Bush had actually been able to find and kill him (or even tried) you would be less critical.
Your suspicion is incorrect. I gave up on Bush when the weapons of mass destruction didn't materialize in Iraq. Get with the program. Just because Bush was a jerk wad doesn't buy any grace for the jerk wad Obama.

But there ccould be more of Rommel's bastard children (ALL tied to al Qaeda of course) kicking around the Sahara and it's probably why they don't care for Jews.

In 60 years will there be Neo-al Qaeda in Kentucky?

If we don't act now the future of Kentucky and fried chicken are at risk.

This is another escalation in the pending conflict yet to come, and its gaining speed.
This cannot go unanswered no matter who tries to stuff it under a lumpy carpet.
Imagine, prosecuting Assange for his transgressions and allowing someone to kill your
Ambassador. These people have no regard for the law international or otherwise.
They have no regard for human life and they are among the most bigoted people on
earth. No one can be critical of their religion. Well folks either we have an open and
democratic society or we don't. It should be that if someone offends their poor little
feelings in a skit or cartoon or on TV or what ever, and they retaliate with violence
Deport Them. Our government just set a precedent those who came here fraudulently
can be stripped of citizenship and deported. Well claiming to go by the laws of Canada
and not going by them is not in keeping to what the signed onto in an open society.
I am sick to death with people coming here to be part of the Canadian family and then
refusing to be part of the family while they inconvenience all the others who built this
society just to accommodate them. If they can't hack the way our society works they should
exercise the right to leave. Doing this in another country is a mute point.
There are thousands that come here with the same tribal mentality and we just accept
their behaviour. We better start asking ourselves some serious questions.
As of most being moderate Muslims. moderate is becoming an act of convenience and I
am slowly getting to the end of my tolerance of their actions. No I do not hate Muslims.
I have friends who are Muslim not many but a few and moderate they are, but there is a
little streak that has this belligerence at times that troubles me (end of rant)

The problem with religions of any sort is that far too many people take ancient scriptures seriously, despite the fact that much of what was written hundreds or even thousands of years ago is hopelessly out of date and in many cases completely irrelevant. Moderate Muslims, moderate Christians, moderate Hindus, and so on, are those who are capable of filtering out the nonsense and using these ancient texts as guides to morality rather than absolute truths that must be mindlessly obeyed.

The incidents in Egypt and Libya were generated by mindless Christians who went out of their way to generate a response from equally mindless Muslims. Unfortunately, they succeeded all too well to the detriment of the innocent embassy staff in Tripoli.

YouTube restricts video access over Libyan violence

(CNN) -- YouTube on Wednesday announced it was restricting access to a controversial video that has been blamed for inciting violence in Libya and protests in Egypt.

The video, a film trailer mocking the Muslim faith, will not be accessible via YouTube in Libya and Egypt, the company said in a statement issued to CNN.

"We work hard to create a community everyone can enjoy and which also enables people to express different opinions," YouTube said by e-mail. "This can be a challenge because what's OK in one country can be offensive elsewhere.

"This video -- which is widely available on the Web -- is clearly within our guidelines and so will stay on YouTube. However, given the very difficult situation in Libya and Egypt we have temporarily restricted access in both countries.
