LONDON – The United States is an overwhelming favorite to finish the Olympic Games in style and finish ahead of China at the top of the medal table. British bookmakers are no longer taking bets on the U.S. to finish first in both the overall medal count and secure the highest tally of gold medals.

Even though the Americans led China by just four total medals – 81 to 77 – and trailed by 32 golds to China's 34 at the start of Thursday's competitions, the strengths of its track athletes and team sports representatives look likely to make the difference.
"You can't get a price on the United States," said a spokesman for gambling company Betfair. "When you look at what they have got coming up, it is all over. It's a shame, it would be like free money."
Yahoo! Sports predicts that the Americans will end on 97 medals: 43 gold, 26 silver and 28 bronze; with China ending up on 90: 40 gold, 26 silver and 24 bronze.
At the Olympic Stadium, decathlete Ashton Eaton, triple jumper Christian Taylor and both 4x400-meter relay teams are heavy favorites to clinch gold, with several other minor medals also likely.
The women's soccer team was already guaranteed at least silver heading into its final showdown with Japan on Thursday night, with women's volleyball, basketball and water polo also tipped for gold-medal glory.
Swimming star Ryan Lochte claimed on Thursday that the spirit in the U.S. camp was the primary reason behind its exceptional medal haul. "The whole team supports each other, and that is a huge thing," said Lochte. "You take out anything negative … and good things happen."
China's only realistic chance of getting close would be if it could clinch a swathe of unexpected medals in Greco-Roman wrestling and taekwondo, which both offer many pieces of hardware due to their various weight classes. However, the U.S. also has medal possibilities in taekwondo, with 2000 and 2004 gold medalist Steven Lopez competing in the men's under-80kg discipline.
China is the favorite to win a pair of golds in diving, thanks to superstars Chen Ruolin and Bo Qiu, while it could potentially occupy all of the podium places in one of its strongest events, the women's 20km walk
Four years ago in Beijing, the U.S. finished with the most medals, 110, which was 10 clear of China. However, the Chinese finished well clear in terms of gold, winning by 51 to 36.
China feels it has been unfairly treated however, with its state-run media complaining of "wrongful convictions" and stating that the "unfair judgment by referees has frequently cast a show over the London Olympics."
The United States will have few complaints though, as it prepares to top the medal table and the gold-medal count for the fourth time in the last five Games, a feat that could be capped off by the superstars of the men's basketball squad on Sunday afternoon.

maybe you think it's success to be ranked below ethiopia, i don't.

not at all, I am a glass half full person, I see the successes, I see the positive, and I also
see how our country is ramping up their interest in helping the athletes, and I see more success
in the future, I see (from experience with athletes), the years of hard work and effort and
appreciate that, as I am going through my everyday routine, they are practicing hour after hour,
to show 'us' and 'themselves' their successes, and even all of the athletes who 'do not' win medals,
do the same, and I applaud them too.

I saw our BMX cyclist this morning 'win' a gruelling race, but he did not move on to the next round,
(as it was an accululation of points, and he just missed out by a small number),
but that race was terrific, and he should be applauded for the win, even though we won't see him again,
and there are lots of other athletes who did not move on, but did a great performance and that should
not go unnoticed.

I could never be ambarrassed by any of these athletes, it is an insult to them, to say that.

our women's soccer team won this morning, (bronze), even though offensively they
were outplayed, the ball has to go in the net to be a goal, and france couldn't
seem to do that, canada held them off very nicely, then scored a great goal in
extra time to claim the medal,
congrats to them for coming back from a big dissapointment to rise to the occasion
and fight for that medal, 'gutsy performance'.

Also, congrats to Canada for winning its soccer game.

2:45 PM EDT.

Here we go with the U.S. vs. Japan soccer game.

Winner gets the gold, loser gets the silver.

Canadians aren't a match with Ethiopia for distance running. Never have been and never will be.

Would love to see beach ping pong. Maybe ice volleyball next winter games.

With U.S. triple jumper Christian Taylor's gold medal in the men's triple jump, U.S. has reached 36 gold medals, the number they achieved in 2008.

Women's soccer gold medal match.

U.S. wins.

Don't you think Americans are kind of .. uh.. OBSESSED.. with beating China in the medal count.. as the American Empire starts to fragment, and precipitous economic and social decline sets in at home.. i suppose it props up a self image, that belies reality..

.. just a thought.. ;)

You were waiting for that one, weren't you EagleSmack.. you'll note that in my congrats i called them the 'best' team in the world.. NOT.. the 'classiest'.

You didn't happen to notice by any chance that one of the U.S. players used her arm to knock down a Japan Free Kick in the 18m box in the first half, in a completely obvious and unambiguous infraction, not called.. which is supposed to be an automatic penalty kick. Doesn't that sound familiar. What was the score again USA 2, Japan 1.. but.. those things happen.. maybe to some more than others. AND i don't want to re-open that debate. :)

Please stop embarrassing the rest of us Canadians.

I'm just kind of tired of Canadians just rolling over when they get the shaft. Speak for yourself CdnBear NOT all Canadians.. you don't have the credentials for that.

In the end, the U.S. team has to live with the fact that were it not for the calls, they may very well have been crying in their beer to day. Not much to celebrate when you know you didn't win fairly and squarely. Too bad as they are a really good team.

GO JAPAN!

Let's ask them...

So am I. The bad calls against the womens soccer team, annoyed me. FIFA's stupidity, annoyed me a little more.

I'm all for calling a spade a spade.

But that isn't what you're doing.

Speak for yourself CdnBear NOT all Canadians.. you don't have the credentials for that.
You're right. But the thumbs up from fellow Canadians, for what I said to you. Lead me to believe, I'm not alone.

You can bitch about poor calls, getting the shaft and what not, without whining or trying to be a goon to the US in the same breath.

The 'thumbs up' here are a joke. lets see their opinions and arguments in black and white if they've got the brass balls for it... i speak for myself.. i don't need an rooting section.. And you'll have to show me one post i've made where i've whined.. or haven't backed up what i've stated with an objective argument. I haven't seen that from you.. oh most righteous and self-designated representative of Canadian thought..

American Runner Finishes Relay Lap on Broken Leg | Olympics | TIME.com
LONDON) — Manteo Mitchell felt the pop in his leg and knew it wasn’t good. “It felt like somebody literally just snapped my leg in half,” he said.

The American sprinter had half a lap to go in the first leg of the 4×400-meter relay preliminaries Thursday and a choice to make: keep running or stop and lose the race. To him, it was never much of a choice.

(PHOTOS: Olympic Highlights)

He finished the lap and limped to the side to watch the Americans finish the race and qualify easily for the final. A few hours later, doctors confirmed what he suspected: He had run the last 200 meters with a broken left fibula.

“I heard it and I felt it,” Mitchell told The Associated Press. “But I figured it’s what almost any person would’ve done in that situation.”

Mitchell finished his heat in a more-than-respectable 46.1 seconds, and the United States tied the Bahamas in the second heat in 2 minutes, 58.87 seconds — the fastest time ever run in the first round of the relay at the Olympics.
