Fred Hahn asked to resign from CUPE national executive
Move does not impact his position at provincial level

OTTAWA — Anti-Israel social media posts have prompted CUPE’s national executive to request the union’s Ontario president to step down from his board.

In an email to union members obtained by the Toronto Sun, the letter informs members that due to an Aug. 11 incident where CUPE Ontario president Fred Hahn shared an anti-Semitic video on his Facebook page, he’s been asked to step down his position as general vice president of CUPE’s national executive.

“The National Executive Board has lost confidence in the ability of Fed Hahn to represent the national union as a General Vice-President, and consequently calls for his resignation from this position.,” the letter says.

The call does not impact Hahn’s role as president of CUPE Ontario.

The post that Hahn shared depicted an AI-generated Olympic diver — wearing a Star of David on his arm — leaping from the springboard before turning into a bomb and falling on houses, purportedly criticism of Israel’s ongoing campaign to eradicate Hamas terrorists from Gaza.

In a statement to the Toronto Sun last week, Hahn defended his comments and dismissed the concerns of his Jewish members.

Hahn gained infamy for a series of problematic social media posts, including a tweet made one day after the Oct. 7 terror attacks.

“As we all think about reasons to be thankful this #thanksgiving2023, I know I’m thankful for the power of workers, the power of resistance around the globe,” he tweeted on Oct. 8.

“Because #Resistance is fruitful and no matter what some might say, #Resistance brings progress, and for that, I’m thankful.”

Among those expressing displeasure was Ontario Labour Minister David Piccini, who during an Association of Municipalities of Ontario reception in Ottawa urged Hahn to represent his entire membership and to “stop hating Jews.”

During a news conference on Wednesday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford referred to Hahn as a “bully” and a “disgusting human being.”

We are fortunate to live in a country where divergent opinions can be expressed without fear of being unjustly demonized. It is within this framework of free speech that I reiterate my long-held belief in the possibility of coexistence — a land shared by two peoples, and a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Such a solution remained within reach until the brutal Hamas assault on Israel on October 7. Sadly, we are no longer blinded by innocence or naivete.
It is an incontrovertible historical truth that the Arab states rejected the United Nations partition plan and launched an attack on Israel immediately following its declaration of independence in 1948. Equally undeniable is the fact that prior to 1948, there was no Palestinian state — no flag, no national anthem, no sovereign identity.

The so-called Nakba, often cited as a catastrophe, was, in reality, a consequence of the Arab states’ decision to wage war against the nascent Jewish state. And although some Arabs were undoubtedly forced from their homes during that war, no mention is made of the expulsion of over 850,000 Jews from Arab lands
Britain was granted a mandate for Palestine by the League of Nations following the fall of the Ottoman Empire in the First World War. The British, who had previously announced support for the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people,” were intended to administer the region “until such time as (the territories of Palestine and Transjordan) are able to stand alone.” Yet there was much opposition to British rule, leading to revolts by both the Jewish and Arab populations.

In 1947, the United Nations approved a partition plan intended to establish independent Jewish and Arab states, with Jerusalem falling under international control. The Jews accepted the plan and declared independence in 1948; the Arabs did not, instead choosing to go to war with the fledgling Jewish state.
Although the country never developed a formal, written constitution, Israeli laws, and its strong judiciary, have consistently served to protect the rights of its minority populations, including Arab-Israelis and LGBTQ people — making it a bastion of freedom and liberalism in a part of the world that does not have a history of respecting human rights.

It’s the only Middle Eastern country that grants full equality to women. The only one that is welcoming to the gay community and has strong anti-discrimination laws.
1724493208809.jpegThe only country where Ahmadi Muslims are free to openly practice their faith, with people of all religious backgrounds enjoying equal protection under the law. Indeed, it is the only country that shares our western liberal values.
Despite this, Israel has become the favoured whipping boy of many in the West who claim to be liberals. The hate that is witnessed, on college campuses and in activist circles, and the double standard that is consistently applied to the Jewish state only serves to underscore the need for a Jewish national home that can provide safety and security in a world in which antisemitism is becoming increasingly normalized.

The so-called Nakba,---

... yeah after that point, this person is full of shit.

Just another idiot posting in the Nat Po.

(BTW, the "So called Nakba" is as real to the Palestinians as the Holocaust is to the Jews and no one, NO ONE, should ever deny the trauma of a culture all because you too fucking smooth brained to have empathy and understanding)

Yep, and an ad hominem argument is a personal attack against the source of an argument, rather than against the argument itself.

Yep, that’s it. I must be brainwashed to be able to form an opinion different that your own, & to show me how right you are, you have to resort to pointing out my “smooth brain” as opposed to actually debating my position, demonstrating what with that?
The "So called Nakba" is…
…is the “catastrophe”…but what catastrophe? The failure of Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, & Lebanon simultaneously to exterminate the Jews and snuff of the state of Israel, so the “So called Nakba” is a failed genocide. That’s traumatic in its trauma at not succeeding with the above goal.
BTW, the "So called Nakba" is as real to the Palestinians as the Holocaust is to the Jews
Yes, because they failed to wipe out Israel.

Honk honk.
Honk Honk indeed!😉Above is the “first” Nakba from 1948-ish…not the only once since then either. I happen to hold a divergent opinion…at least here today.

It’s propaganda from many sides in that goat rodeo. Everyone with their own spin.

Yep, and an ad hominem argument is a personal attack against the source of an argument, rather than against the argument itself.

That the writer calls it "so called" shows they already consider the issue not valid, so why waste breath (or words) even going into explaining why they're full of shit in a place they won't even see it?

Unless you personally actually agree with it, and in that case, fine. Perhaps you should look up the history of the Nakba. Or I guess I could throw information out there for you to read or not.

Yep, that’s it. I must be brainwashed to be able to form an opinion different that your own,

If you want to take it as applying to you, that's on you.

I was talking more about this fucking idiot author.

& to show me how right you are, you have to resort to pointing out my “smooth brain” as opposed to actually debating my position, demonstrating what with that?

Again, that's on you if you took my focus to the author as some sort of personal response.

And honestly right now Ron, I'm stepping back from this convo with you.

Does Hamas propaganda blur history with pure bullshit or cover up terrorism? Does it guilt you? Does it shame you? Are there laws that enforce it? Does it make outlandish claims of superiority over other humans?

Unfortunately, the Hamas are against a 2-state solution. They insist that Israel must be destroyed & all Jews along with it. How do you convince a terrorist group that they need to change their attitude? Most likely no one can which is why this is not going to be an easy win for Israel, especially since they are always deemed to be the aggressor when all they're doing is trying to survive.

So, what is the solution then? When one part is irrational it's pretty hard to come up with any solution. And, if Palestinians insist on having Hamas govern them, then they'll just have to put up with being slaves to their leadership who insists on brainwashing children that Jews & Christians are monkey's & pigs, therefore must be destroyed, there will never be a solution unless the Palestinians themselves reject Hamas. We could be waiting a long time for that to happen. Just sayin...
