I fully support the government providing funds for the families of the victims, TM. I don't see it as letting Iran off the hook as our government has already stated they will be seeking compensation. They can just add this to the final total.

I was listening to an interview with one of the family members who works now to support not just his own family but that of his brother who died. The man still breaks down randomly from grief. He's just a taxi driver and his brother's assets are frozen. This money will help with his family.

It is encouraging that Iran was talking about compensation in the same announcement as when they admitted to the shoot-down.
I take it as a sign that they have realized that "lie and deny" isn't working for them.
Still some hard negotiations to go, but I agree that it's appropriate for Canada to help families that need it, and reimburse itself from the eventual settlement.
