The Toronto South Detention Centre is understaffed, but conditions are not so bad that judges need to reduce the sentences of offenders housed there, the OPSEU representative for correctional officers says.
Ontario Corrections Division Chair Chris Jackel said the mega-jail does indeed experience its share of incidents and lockdowns, but it’s modern and clean.
“It’s no mystery that Toronto South is probably one of the more difficult institutions right now, and has been for some time,” he said.
“At the end of the day, there could have been some lockdowns … but (inmates) still get everything that they’re entitled to — they still get their showers, their yard, their fresh air, they get access to visitors, access to lawyers, all this stuff still happens.”
This week, Ontario Court of Justice Judge William Horkins sentenced burglar Joshua Lenz to time served due to him being remanded at Toronto South prior to his trial.
(Oh yes- LIE-beral hug a thug judges will use any excuse to tread very lightly where criminal rights are concerned!! LIE-berals are very aware that criminals often have an extensive array of family members and ethically challenged community supporters!! And LIE-berals do not wish to offend such people and lose votes - by taking real action against thugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(Some of this stuff is just the usual civil service union HOG CRAP -designed to make it clear many problems would magically GO AWAY if only we threw more gravy at the HOGS - and THERE is the heart of the matter - those running the system are focussed ONLY on gravy - and on BUYING VOTES - so things like public safety and honest justice - that the public cares about only are VAGUE AFTER THOUGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Jackel agreed the centre is short staffed — arguing it needs another 50 to 100 full-time correctional officers — but said the judge may have “pushed the envelope a little bit too far.”

According to the Ministry of the Solicitor General, Toronto South has an operational capacity of 1,192 beds with a current inmate population of 1,134.
(So it is currently holding a FEW LESS thugs than it was designed for so everybody gets a bed and there are no mattresses on the floor and no problems jamming 3 men into a cell made for one or two - and there will be adequate seating at dinner time so no need to fight over seating and etc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Ministry spokesman Andrew Morrison declined to comment on an individual case or a decision of the courts.
“Lockdowns at Ontario correctional facilities are necessary at times,” Morrison said in an email, explaining that partial lockdowns are preferred over full.

As part of efforts to reform Ontario’s jails, the provincial government has hired 172 new correctional officers since December 2018 and increased supports for all officers, a statement said.

“Obviously, I think the Ministry is aware there’s a bigger problem and they should really look at staffing levels at Toronto South,” Jackel said.
“I don’t know what (staffing) formula they use, but I don’t think it’s working.”
