The mentally ill cannot buy or own firearms. A doctor makes this determination. State law prohibits ownership or sales to those deemed to be mentally ill.
WRT the mentally ill buying firearms,
if the state or a doctor has someone committed, they cannot purchase firearms. People who check themselves in voluntarily, may be able to buy a firearm. So your patient who left the hospital and purchased a firearm must have voluntarily gone to the hospital, or the sale was illegal.
